Hunch invites up for grabs. March 31, 2009 2:43 PM Subscribe
This post about Hunch was deleted because the site is currently invite-only. I have three invites and I'd like to give them to MeFites.
I would've just done it in the post, but it was deleted before I had a chance. Who wants in? Also, so this isn't just about me giving away three measly invites, perhaps other people with spares could offer them up to the community.

Ah, jessamyn snagged the first one very quickly via MeMail. ageispolis and aheckler have called the other two. Can you both MeMail me your email addresses?
Sorry others. If I get any more, I'll make it known. Other MeFites with invites, it's your turn!

Well, one thing I've noticed...
When you invite someone they get 3 invites and the person they invite gets three invites...
So, really i think the people here can come back and supply invites and well, create limitless amounts. Everyone who wants one will be able to get one.

20 bucks says tomorrow morning the site changes it's name to "Ignorant Baby Hating Puppy Kicking Assholes of America", you should all think about whether or not you really want to risk that. I mean I would stay a member, it would be even closer to my demographic, but what about the rest of you?

the site's interesting yet strange...
it's basically a learning machine; asks a lot of questions. notes your answers.
uses this to build a profile on you, i assume, and somehow turns those answers into a meaningful db that it can access for further profiling. whatever that means.
it also, and most importantly (to the site), has a lot of questions that you get to wade through and answer. these questions are answered by filling out more questionnaires and then an answer is shown to you, a series of possible correct answers.
you pick the one(s) you think are correct and/or create a new answer. if you create a new answer it helps you to construct a path to that answer, through the same series of questions you just answered, and then a nice page showing your answer.
interesting. not as much fun as f*** my life, but i've been at it for a while now. the bloom will fade...

My invite supply has been exhausted.
If you're looking for one, keep in mind that members need your email address to send you an invite -- just posting ME ME ME here isn't going to help, unless you have your email in your profile and make that clear in your comment. (And even that isn't ideal, since one asker might end up getting invites from several people.)
The best way, like TPS said, is to Memail your email address to the folks who have invites.

So, uh, has anyone figured out what this thing actually does? I mean other than gathering demographic data tied to the email addresses of early adopters?

There are a lot of Web 2.0 bells and whistles, but the core of it is basically like Pandora's music selection engine or Amazon's product recommendations but applied to all sorts of things. There are a bunch of topics that involve lists of things (where to go on vacation, what video game to buy, etc.) and by asking you a series of questions and comparing you to others it comes up with suggestions for which out of the list would be best for you.
I haven't really dug into it because to me it feels like a poor man's AskMe, but it's an interesting idea. And although they do have the throwaway email address I gave them, they really don't ask for much personal info.

Except for the part where they take you through an apparently endless series of personal-preference questions that feel designed to create a consumer profile.

This. I mentioned upthread that they seem geared towards linking people to sites where they can buy fine shiny goods, complete with referral IDs in the URLs. Hunch is slick, alright.
That's what all of these kinds of sites do though. Pandora will send you off to Amazon or iTunes to buy any of the music you hear there. Even AskMe injects a refferer code into any Amazon links that get posted.
As I said their service by its nature isn't all that useful, but their strategy of providing a free service while using the site content to serve targeted advertising is similar to pretty much everyone else on the Internet. Even though their site is more explicit about extracting personal preferences from users, a company like Google, which can link data from search, Gmail, Google Checkout, Google Voice, etc. can already tell advertisers a lot more about you than Hunch can.

That's pretty much right there in Caterina's writing about the project, though; referrer income on product recommendations is part of how they're hoping to generate revenue. It's not really "slick" in any this-is-how-the-getcha sense so much as the above-board gameplan, I think.
Whether or not that'll be a successful revenue model, I dunno. I'm not sure I'll get much use of the site, but I'm curious to see how it develops and whether people in general find it useful in the long run. There are times when I just want a good-enough suggestion about what to buy in territory that's new to me, and for that kind of thing I could see Hunch being a reasonable approach, I guess.

Yeah looks like it's open up to anyone who gives them an email address. I'm still not totally sure what it does. Or maybe I'm just not the sort of person that would ask life-choice type questions of an unknown internet peanut gallery. Has anyone found something it's really useful for? I took the career test ad under "wild card" it said librarian. Huh.

I don't quite get it either. I don't really need a website to make decisions for me. But if the GNE/Flickr people are involved, I figure there must be coolth there somewhere that I can't see yet. And the questions are fun to answer.

Well 83% of the world has a neater closet than I do, it seems. Though I assumed this already.
I like extrapolating things about the user base: 80% male, all lousy tippers who don't think much of Warhol, dancing, creationism or Better Homes and Gardens, but they can assemble a stereo outdoors in the dark without a manual and make dinner reservations in three languages.

I find myself answering those questions as if in a social/party context rather than a like life-goal thing, and going with the "fit in" choice, which is apparently a minority no matter how you ask it of the Hunch demographic.
Because, honestly? I want to chill out and be comfortable when I'm hanging out with other people. I'm not worried about running with the crowd because I avoid going to Klan gatherings and such; if the sort of people I choose to spend my time around collectively think that something sounds like a fun idea, it'll probably be fun.
I may have been beanplating it a bit on those, though.

Also, I think the stereo question is bullshit. We're out of the hobbyist transistor radio age, people. You're not fixing you're fucking stereo yourself if your receiver goes belly up.

The founder said on her blog article about this that it is not exactly useful yet, because there is not enough data in the system, but that it will be useful once the userbase is large enough. She compared it to Wikipedia when it just started. If they'll get a very large userbase, I think this could be a good general site for book/movie/etc recommendations.

I think it will be much more helpful when people take the time not only to answer questions, but to train the results. There are a lot of good topics that only have 2 or 3 questions. I really encourage you guys to add more questions and train the results, because it will become increasingly useful to all. And I know I'm repeating myself but I haven't had my coffee yet.
ALSO - Because the site is 80% male, I am reserving my remaining invites for females only. Memail me. I encourage some of you to do the same in order to balance out the site. I'm not sure I want a bunch of nerdy guys advising me on what to wear today.

Ha! This is soooo true. Double Plus I found out I really enjoy asking questions-- I've contributed about 58 questions so far. If you answered a question about pink flamingos or clowns-- that was Me!
On the other hand I took the "what should I grow question" and the 4 answers were pretty lame. I won't be using the site to make any decisions for me just yet.
