So why isn't there a "disliked" button to go beside the "favorite"?

There is no way this hasn't been asked before, but can we get some sort of "anti-favorite" button, i.e. a "disliked" button?

I can already guess the reason why it doesn't exist is simply for wanting to keep the peace and not start feuds on metafilter... some people just can't help being children and the site admins are busy enough without full-on babysitting.

But if you can only 'dislike' it once, just like the favorites, i think it'd be good to be able to point out to someone their comments in askmefi were unhelpful, and be able to just leave it at that - no chatfilter.

Sorry to the admins if they're overtired of this one already...

It's because Mefites are generally extremely negative people, with very high standards.

Just take it as read that if a comment has no favourites, everybody hates it; if it has one favourite, everybody except that one person hates it, and so on. This approach saves a lot of load on the servers.

Because the favorite button is for you to use however you want. It usually does register approval, true, but it's basically a bookmark. On more than one occasion I've favorited comments that I completely disagree with because they were phrased in an interesting way, or they usefully summed up a particular perspective. It could be my favorite stupid comment, my favorite racist tirade, my favorite dumb statement of the week. Maybe I collect delightful typos. If the writer thinks I've patted him or her on the back, well, no skin off my nose.

Add a dislike button and the tiny ambiguity we have now is gone. Favorites will be seen as unalloyed applause. And controversial comments (say, a pro-GOP comment on an liberal-dominated website, if such a thing were to happen) would be likely to generate ten "dislikes" for every favorite, essentially discouraging minority viewpoints and encouraging groupthink. Whatever damage the favoriting system has done to metafilter will be tiny in comparison to the trainwreck if you add a dislike option.

lord can you imagine the MeTa threads that would spawn?

"I only get 100 'dislikes' a DAY!!!?"

"Why does everyone hate me?"

"The secret cabal is trying to keep me down, I can prove it, matjestex has 'disliked' me!"

"Ban dislike!" (a topic that would surface 1x a month)

"What is the correct way to use 'dislike'?" (once a month as well)

"Can we 'dislike' Askme threads please?"

"Can we 'dislike' Music submission please?"

"I 'disliked' Matt, now xyz isn't work... metafilter is the suck"

"I dised you"

"User xyz is stalking me by using 'dislikes'."

"Retaliatory 'dislikes'!"

What COULD GO WRONG?!!!

We already have one. It's called a flag. Dislike a comment? Flag it.

But moreover, the reason we don't have a specific 'dislike' button is because here at Metafilter, instead of voting down comments or doing something similarly pedestrian as they do at other sites, we can, in addition to flagging, do any of the following;

* Make a counter-point or comment about why a comment was terrible, sparking debate and informing points-of-view.

* Start a MeTa thread if something is particularly egregious

Also, if you subscribe to the view that favorites are a way of indicating popularity, you can simply not favorite it. If a comment or answer is truly terrible, it probably won't get a lot of favorites, a lot of flags and maybe even it's own MeTa.

In short, the system as it stands works and that's why we don't need something as blunt as a dislike button.
posted by Effigy2000 at 9:20 PM on March 16, 2009 [1 favorite]

Fine. I agree, but I would like to flag something as other than "noise". "Utterly dumb", "psuedo-science" and "Must you always say that?" would be nice flags as well. Oh and, "jackhole-ninny". I really want a jackhole ninny flag.

But, I think then we'd be getting to the point where we are asking the admins to make nice little paved paths between individual sand castles. This isn't Digg, this isn't /., and we can just look at someone's posting history very easily when someone answers a question in a way we find questionable.
posted by kellyblah at 9:26 PM on March 16, 2009

Because it's one thing to just say "You're cool!" with no further details. It's unhealthy for a community to just say "you suck!" with no clarification. That's why we force people to use their words when they want to register disapproval - "Hey, poster, your strawman attacks aren't amusing us." Even mods deleting FPPs leave some words behind to explain what's going on.
posted by Tomorrowful at 9:27 PM on March 16, 2009 [2 favorites]

Other side effect: the hundreds of dormant little eggs laid by Mr. President Doctor Steve Elvis America would immediately hatch and begin swarming over the site to the chitinous clattering of plastic keys, and then MetaFilter would get trolled so damn hard that Bilbo's adventure ends long before they get to the forest, if you know what I'm sayin'. You just know that select MeFites would look like Hindu deities at the Jim Henson Company, so many sockpuppets would arise, each dedicated to pissing off specific subgroups and views, with their owners later to gloat over dislikes received that day while rubbing their stocking-covered paws and contemplating the latest talking point from LGF they'd like to slip in.

I believe a little trolling is healthy. Visible dislikes, though ... might as well just chuck the tribbles in the grain bin.

This has basically been covered, but yeah:

If you like something, and wish to agree or register your approval, you can simply favorite, reducing the amount of, "Astro Zombie is fuckin' awesome" noise which would ensue without it. If you hate something, you should explain why, or else if someone else has already explained why in a way you can't add anything special to, you can favorite their comment.

And if something is truly offensive or else damaging to the site, you can always flag it and move on.

(I usually just move on without flagging, but that's just me.)

I prefer all human exchange be either passive aggressive or passive amicable: Winks, nods, innuendo, scowls, car bombs, and secretly befouled toothbrushes. Direct engagement is for brutish, uncivilized animals: See, do you, how they groom, copulate, and maim! We should only communicate with each other via the impersonal, binary flag system from now on.

Each comment can float in its own little hermetic world with no relation to any other comment. In fact, all comments should be completely hidden for 30 days, until the thread closes. At which time the comments are finally made visible, and we can all go through and rate all the comments with our thumb up/thumb down flag system, and it will be ever so much fun.

    Errata:

-I misspelled "parody" one time. But I spelled it correctly the other two times.
-I did not write a parody of (She Was A) Hotel Detective In The Future because I haven't really listened to anything TMBG has done in the past 7-8 years.
-These parodies are lacking cohesive narrative.

Metafilter is not an unpopularity contest!

I favorite things so I can go back and read them later. If there's some I dislike, by definition, I won't want to go back and read it. So what would be the point?

You unlock it after earning 5000 favorites

Holy shit I would love it if Metafilter had unlockables. The possibilities! They're without limit!

5000 favorites - "dislike" button activated
7500 favorites - free year's supply of plates and beans
10000 favorites - cortex performs at your homecoming dance or office mixer
15000 favorites - image tag activated

It seems like jessamyn has a lot of memos that we never got. I think we've also all been doing our TPS reports all wrong.

    Booo-urns

I was on the mall in D.C. for the inauguration, and I really wish just one person had said "I was saying 'Booo-ush!'" within wear-shot of me. It was cold out there, and more laughter would've kept me warmer.

How can you say that. Don't you know there are children in Africa as we speak?

I think we've also all been doing our TPS reports all wrong.

I know -- mine is all pink!

I played that very song not but hours before in a bar to a very unappreciative audience. Bah, philistines.

It's not against the rules to be stupid here.

And that's why I'm still here.

Sometimes I think that seeing the favorites count hurts my experience using metafilter, so I wrote a greasemonkey script that hides the counts.
