Closure? Let me have my own! March 9, 2009 5:16 PM Subscribe
I think this is where I ask for my very own pony. Re: AskMe updates.
Every now and then something happens in relation to one of my askmes that has already been closed as a result of the time limit. I'm wondering if it might be possible to leave askmes open for update by the OP indefinitely, while still leaving it closed for everyone else.
I have a feeling this may have been requested before, but my mefi-google-fu fails. Please forgive me!

Sure is, but I figure it's my post, why shouldn't I be able to update?

Oh, yeah, that's a MetafilterPlus membership feature. You need to pay another five bucks in order to use it.

I don't know, I think a year is a pretty long time and allows for followups (you get a MeFi Mail reminder after 30 days). Keeping them open for just one user seems like it would have limited utility and open us up to people getting their last word in "suck it everyone that said I should break up with him, we just got married!!!"
What kinds of situations require more than a year for followups, sunshinesky?

I would say anything advice-based that has no solid answer in the first place.
I suppose you have already weighed this option though, and since you/tehsnark^ don't think it's a necessary or sound idea. Feel free to close this up.

You gotta admit that would be pretty sweet, though. Especially punctuated with a pithy "FACE!"

Oooh, I hadn't even considered the ability to tell you losers to suck it! I'm definitely on board now.

Any and all AskMe updates are great, I think. Even "Suck it, losers!" would give us closure.
Why don't they update? *SOB*

I'd argue that you shouldn't be using ask me for questions that have no solid answer.

Travel. I might be going back to Ubud this year and if I come across a yoga class… Still, once TravelFilter's up we'll be updating there indefinitely, yes? Places to visit and things to see and do don't remain locked, they're fluid.

You know what would be a nice idea though? The ability to "bump" an AskMe after, I dunno, 120 days or whatever. There are some good open-ended AskMe's (like MINE) that could really benefit from a second exposure to the front page of Ask.

Hello sunshinesky!
I studied your questionnaire and you have seemed to me is very interesting, you seem to me that kind sympathetic to date up, and the main thing present the girl to date up! While I read the questionnaire from the beginning and up to the end you have seemed to me the close person, that who we can to understand me and will allow me to understand itself to feel that happiness which so does not suffice in a life! I very much hope that I was not mistaken and I to date you up and shall receive the answer from you here my memail.

Medical questions should be left open for followups on answers that resulted in death or dismemberment*.
* this could also apply to questions about declawing or bathing cats

I suspect there's a way to have one's cake and eat it, too:
Only leave threads open for a year. If, after that, the OP has some sort of Earth-shattering conclusion, he can email it to a mod and the mod can post it in the original thread. My guess is this would rarely happen, but it would solve the problem when it did occur.

My real question is, would it really bog down the server that much to have a capability like this? What's the big problem?

Server space or CPU is not the limiting resource in this instance; mod attention is.
