I would totally give this site a dutch rudder. March 5, 2009 10:22 PM Subscribe
I just want to share why I love the Blue.
I frequent all the big social news sites. Digg, Reddit, Memepool, etc.
And I don't think I appreciated just how level-headed and well moderated this community is until today.
Today I screwed up and posted a comment that could have gotten me in trouble at work. I used the contact form to get in touch with cortex and the comment was nuked in like 30 seconds. It was awesome to see such a fast response to fix my little fuck up.
I know other sites let people delete their own comments and that would have been easier. But I'm glad I didn't have that choice. For one, having to go through a moderator to get it done means that I'm accountable, if only to them, and that's better than nothing. It shows that Metafilter actually tries to maintain their integrity and it's what sets this place so far apart from the vapid circle jerks that other social news sites have become.
I love the fact that as long as you're being thoughtful, you can totally disagree. I love the fact that republicans can come in to our liberal love fests and voice their opinions without a bunch of idiots "downvoting" or "burying" their comments into oblivion. I love the fact that we have a TF2 server. I love the fact that when someone tries to post a SEO AD SPAM BLOG to the front page, it doesn't just go un-dugg to no-where, but it get's deleted AND the poster gets called out on it.
I love the fact that someone can post a 300 word comment and it's not immediately made fun of by the peanut gallery screaming "TL;DR!" I love that people can ask silly and trivial questions and have them taken seriously. I love that people can ask weighty and important questions and have them taken seriously. I love the fact that we can post images in comments but we have the restraint not to and the mods can delete them if and when someone tries to abuse it.
I could go on, but I think I've made my point. This site is so many things that other social news sites aren't. It's really the top of the heap in my opinion. You guys truly deserved that shout out from Time
Stay classy metafilter.

I love that the site is even-keeled enough that some members actually think we have the self-restraint to never ever post a single image ever... even though the img tag is really just blocked.

The latest Phrase a Week email talked about the saying 'my old dutch", which was new to me. Unlike other racist english terms like dutch courage etc. it suggested this was a contraction of duchess, and was just slang for wife. So is a dutch rudder suggesting that it isn't as good as full english tug, or is it suggesting it is a tender wifely act? Regardless, I recommend the phrase a week email, it is the duck's nut's.

I want to refer you to a much missed member and her posts and comments. Harsh as she may have come across, there was truth. naxosaxur was one of the contributors that impelled me to sign up. (I knew she was going to make this statement, one week in advance of me stating I would make a statement.)

I was looking through really old posts and saw images in them. I didn't know that the functionality had been removed, I assumed that a consensus arose that it wasn't cool and everyone played along.

I love the fact that republicans can come in to our liberal love fests and voice their opinions without a bunch of idiots "downvoting" or "burying" their comments into oblivion
You must not have been here during the election.

At least once a day someone writes something on Metafilter that makes me completely furious but I consider it good for the blood so I still love you all.

At the end of 2006, we voted to replace the IMG tag with the AUDIO tag. Thus far, only the silent scream has been implemented.

That's awfully kind of you. The tag went offline for good on October 22nd, 2006. Behold, the Timeline!

If only I could have been so lucky.

loquacious's comment is what killed the image tag. Some of the most frequent offenders posters of images were also addicted to BIG.

lysistrata : At least once a day someone writes something on Metafilter that makes me completely furious but I consider it good for the blood so I still love you all.
Yeah, I'm really sorry about that. I didn't think you'd take my comments about the the ramifications of the MiniƩ ball on modern warfare particularly in its effects on ground tactics so personally.
To be fair, my later explanation of the use of limestone in the construction of the the pyramids at Giza was totally a dig against you, and I fully understand why when further down in that same comment I said, "the use of vectored thrust on modern aircraft allows for a much greater ability to maneuver", you would respond by calling me a seditious pigfucker.
It was a fair appraisal on your part, I was totally out of line. I'm just glad that in the spirit of love for this site, we can finally come together and agree that ATS34 is just a better choice than AUS8 for modern knifemaking.
Now, hugs all-around!

(Also: The images from 9622v.2 totally killed my old iBook. Seriously.)
