Links in AskMeFi March 2, 2009 8:45 AM Subscribe
What do I need to do so that links in AskMeFi open in a new page, instead of taking me away from AskMeFi? Links on pages from other sites do.
Check your preferences, the seventh line down should read "Open links in new windows?", this box should be checked.

With most browsers, middle-clicking on links opens them in a new tab/window.

Are you on FireFox? ctrl-click, or middle button click.

If you don't want to fiddle with your Mefi settings: On Windows, ctrl-click (on a Mac, cmd-click) to open in a new window or tab.

I always right-click the link and select open in new tab. Because middle-click is impossible with a scroll-wheel (it's barely even a mouse button it takes so much effort to depress!) and the keyboard is all the way over there and I'm seriously just that lazy.

If you have Firefox, you can also get the Mouse Gesture add-on that allow you to control various parameters by right-click + drag. To open a new window, you would simply drag the link up.

You should invest $15 in a scrollmouse manufactured after 1453.

Or you could just, you know, left-click + drag the link up to the tab bar because that's just how it works, even without addons.

Cool! I was doing the middle-click because I didn't know about the drag-to-tab-bar thing. This keeps related tabs together, too.

These instructions are for Firefox, running on Windows, with a two-button mouse. If you need screenshots, or a screen cast, let me know and I'll have my team put something together.

Progress, not perfection. Especially if there's software involved.
