What's MetaFilter worth?
Of course, to us, it's priceless. But to a buyer, it's apparently worth less than $1,000,000.

More seriously, I'm not surprised by this - as much as I love MeFi, it does not get the traffic (nor does it have the recognition) of the blogs on that list. Most of my friends and family are only aware of MeFi because I am; the blogs on that list have much greater profile.

To determine value, [...] unique visitor and pageviews information from [...] Alexa, Quantcast, Compete, and comScore. [...] Our estimated CPMs for ads are based on the current display and text ad environment, the quality of ads at each blog, and the number of ads that it runs on the average pages. [...] multiples of revenue and operating income were used to assess value. Large blogs with big “moats” got higher multiple that smaller ones. Recreating Huffington Post or TechCrunch would be extremely difficult, especially in a recession. Blogs with one founder who does most of the writing were given lower multiple because the presence of that single person is essential to the company’s value. [...]
1. No description of how they decided which sites to calculate values for. Maybe they didn't even consider MetaFilter.
2. An estimated visitor number, multiplied by an estimated income per thousand visitors based on factors like the number of ads on the average page, to produce an estimate of annual revenue? That sounds like it could produce estimates that were orders of magnitude out.
3. Then take the annual revenue and multiply it by an arbitrary number between 3 and 12, based, as far as I can tell, on the author's opinions of the blog.
IMHO they might as well have had the writer just pull the valuation (and site ordering) out of his ass; what he's done here is little more than that.

Haven't we learned anything from purely mathematical projections of imaginary money? For example: Perez Hilton wouldn't be the same without that guy - the value is in creations. They just happen to be located at perezhilton.com.
With that, my calculations put MeFi at approximately eleventykajillion space units, or 25 bacon unicorns. Those numbers may not mean anything now, but that's because MeFi has future value.

Monetary worth is often a poor metric of value.
# Gawker Properties -- $170 million.
# Huffington Post -- $90 million.
# The Drudge Report -- $48 million.
In this case, for example, the three most "valuable" blogs mirror the values of "media" assholes with millions of dollars. We have one company focused on stupid incestual gossip, a Democratic news outlet, and a Republican news outlet.

Previously you could have gotten at least 1.8 troy-furlongs per TFD, but due to the devaluation that followed the re-rationalization of the HTU you'd be hard-pressed to get even 1.2 hogsheads against each troy-furlong, and even then opportunities for a direct exchange are nigh-impossible so you've got to trade to the pennyfarthing-hedgerow and trade again, losing a percentage to commission each time, up to one ass's worth depending on the brokerage.

MetaFilter is worth about a million pictures.
And at the going rate of 1000 words per picture, that puts the net worth of Metafilter at roughly one billion words. Taking the middle estimate from louche mustachio's links, and each word is worth a little less than $.001 - which could be worse but isn't exaclt efficient. However, as we know, the picture is, again, worth one thousand words, assuming that the market crash affected pictures and texts proportionately... carry the one...
Yes, we need the image tag back. For the economy.

On reflection, I think I would prefer the rubies.

Is the purpose of this post to learn the site's estimated value, divide it by word count, and send a rental bill to Illiad?

I would pay A LOT more than $20 for a blowjob from a nun. Even from someone dressed as a nun ...
So what sort of money are we talking here, exactly? Uhh...big boy?

If you take inflation into account, free sometime in 1999 is far more than the $5 I paid in 2005.

Nah, not really. Diddley-shit to the tenth power is still diddley-shit.

Blowjobs are not so much an investment for the future, but money well spent on the present. But none of the present is going to last. So take your blowjobs and give it to the poor. What difference does it matter what you own? You have gold and silver it's going to rot, and that rot is going to eat away your heart. All of you. There will be a flood and there will be a fire. Everything will be destroyed. But there will be a new ark riding on that fire and I hold the keys, and I open the door, and I decide who goes in and who doesn't.
You think the internet will answer only to you? It doesn't. The internet is an immortal spirit who belongs to everybody - to the whole world. You think your special? The internet is not a MeFite. In the forums, the trolls warned us, the Internet is coming. But I'm telling you it's too late. It's already here. I'm here. And I'm going to bastardize everything... With MOARLOLZPLZ!
Come with me...

The human body itself is worth $45 million. If you're a dog, your worth depreciates over time.
This comment has nothing to do with anything, really. Insert joke about "you could buy me for $20, same as in town" here.

I'll bet scarabic's one answer alone was worth 20-25 years in prison to someone out there.

What if I only want to buy Cortex?
Sorry, but he's not for sale. Sentimental value. To me having Cortex locked in my crawlspace, ready to do my bidding, is priceless.

Once on MetaTalk, someone asked "Why doesn't mathowie have a $200M valuation?" Matt's response: "This is a feature not a bug."
