Reykjavík meet-up December 29, 2008 9:24 AM Subscribe
I met Marisa Stole the Precious Thing for coffee earlier today and he and I thought it was about time Iceland had a MetaFilter meet-up. So, MeFites in Reykjavík and nearby towns, are you game for a meet-up on January 2nd?

We had gone back and forth in some distant thread about Unix type stuff, so it warmed my heart to think it was a female in a non-traditional role and seemingly doing it well. Not that it matters, of course.

It's a surprise that MSTPT is a dude? Until today, I would have put $1 against $5 that MSTPT was Stephen C. Den Beste operating under a name that didn't have all the expectations and political baggage that went with his meatspace name, so he could just hang out and talk about anime and shit without being taken to task for unrelated things he wrote in 2002.

I know of MSPT because... he.... was the very first person to post a comment in my very first post. I was so nervous that I would screw up my post somehow resulting in a flaming heap of burn-out that I immediately became enamored with MSPT when he wrote that he liked the post.
I didn't know it was a him, or I would have flagged the comment and started a callout angrily denouncing him as someone else's sock puppet. I swear I'm not gay. Not that there's anything wrong with that. I have many friends that are gay. What's the deal with airline food?
Rumple, we'll have to get that organized after the holidays end. Mayhaps next month? I'd hate to hijack this already-hijacked thread by organizing our meetup right in the middle of so many people finding out they're gay for Marissa Stole My Precious Heterosexuality.

I'm surprised anyone is surprised that MSTPT is a man. I was briefly uncertain, but when he explained about how his name was derived from some Japanese Anime/Game/Wankfest thing, I remember thinking that I'd never met a woman who could choose such an incredibly nerdy username.
(Sorry I cant be more specific about what the name refers to. The text was all in Japanese, but the graphics were your usual big doe eyed anime girl stuff.)
I think it was in one of his early FPP's?

Oh hey guys.
I hope no one feels they were deceived about my true gender. I certainly didn't intend to lead anyone on. I did outline the origins of my name in my profile, after all; that it's the name of a song. I guess I don't go into a lot of detail about me as a person (apart from anecdotal stories from my past) because I don't want to be one of those posters who blabs autobiographically about my job, my neighborhood, my dog or what have you if it has no relevance to the post, comment or thread. I'm glad people have been happy with my contributions to Metafilter, and hope I can continue to be seen as a positive contribution to the site. I'd lurked for a couple of years, constantly fascinated by the level of discourse that goes on here, the way people exchange ideas civilly and intelligently, the things on the internets that I've been introduced to via this site are innumerable. It's my pleasure to be a part of it and learn from all of you.

I hope no one feels they were deceived about my true gender. I certainly didn't intend to lead anyone on. I did outline the origins of my name in my profile, after all; that it's the name of a song. Too bad "gender" is a profile field. Otherwise we could have a "guess my gender" MeFi game.
What trips me up most on MeFi is my assumptions about sexuality. I get momentarily confused when someone with a female username mentions "my wife."
I do like having my assumptions challenged, and it's a learning experience to be surprised that someone is a different nationality/ethnicity/gender/sexuality than I'd assumed.

So far it's me, MSTPT and Zero Gravitas. Real life friend neuroking is in town visiting some mutual friends of ours so he might join if he hasn't been whisked away to the countryside, a danger for tourists in Iceland. An Icelandic real life friend has an account but has never actually done anything with it (I don't think he even logs in when he looks at the Blue) so he's been reluctant to come, even though I've pestered him repeatedly. We'll be at the same New Year's party so I have plenty of time to pester him some more.

I think for clarification (and AZ's weiner), we're going to need to start another Icelandic meetup thread where everyone comes clean on their gender.
I mean, we could start a Metatalk thread that's actually supposed to be about gender, but the Icelandic meetup thread has worked so well thus far. I've learned that EVERY SINGLE ONE OF YOU ARE GUYS.
Now I'm feeling really silly for wanting to check out bitter-girl.com's website to see if there was maybe a picture to check out, you know, see if she was a cute as her comments are intelligent and interesting. Now that I know she's probably a he along with the rest of you... I don't know.

You know, in all seriousness, this is a surprise to me but a happy one. Because I was all arm-in-arm with Marisa in the Not-rape thread, and I felt like we were kind of backing each other up. And I imagined, you know, that we were speaking not just from shared positions but from shared gender as well.... but it wasn't like that. So this is a fine lesson on making assumptions online, and one I'm happy to be reminded of.

When I first arrived on Usenet in the early 90's, quite a lot of people used 'sie' and 'hir' as gender-neutral pronouns.
They always seemed kind of silly and affected to me, but they were far from uncommon on some newsgroups.

I'm a singular they fan myself. English wasn't built to handle gender-neutral singular pronouns, and the singular they seems to have naturally evolved to fill that gap. Sure, made-up pronouns would work better, but it's a lot easier to accept a natural change to a language than it is to force an artificial change on a language.

Try having people confuse you for a filling entrée. I'm serious. I have gotten several MeMails over the last year, from different MeFites, simply either thanking or cursing me for making them hungry when they read my username. One even began "damn you . . ." I am a male entrée.
I would just like to point out that the above sentence is an awesome bit of Franglais, for all kinds of reasons. Among them: Persistence of femininity despite simultaneous denial, and a beautiful double-entendre resulting from noun/adjective ambiguity.
Furthermore, it perfectly critiques the rather Freudian insistence on the part of la langue française--and certain MeFites, apparently--that an entrée is inherently feminine.
And very filling at that.
That, on the other hand, is a dick joke. (Or is it a fat joke?) It wants a rimshot; it gets a sad trombone.

It's a dick joke. Just being clear on followup. Fill up on that one, why don't you?
Also, your franglais bit is less clever than you think. "Entrée" is an anglicized word at this point in history, accented or not (in a set that consists of appetizer/entree/salad/dessert). English inanimate nouns have no grammatical gender, or very weak grammatical gender. You get the sad trombone for forced and lame linguistic humor. (I'm a linguist, so I get to say so.) It's only funny if you get confused about what language you're speaking, which may mean you have a traumatic brain injury.

I was saying you were clever, fourcheesemac. So I guess you, um, aren't?
