Is there are gardening wiki, or do we have enough gardeners here to have a garden.metafilter.com?
Is there are, or is there ain't?
Don't nobody never know.

I am in favor of this. I wonder, however, if it's something that should be taken off site in the manner of sportsfilter, metachat, and travelfilter.
Did I do that? Ooohhhh, snap! Seriously though, what does it cost to host either of these sites?

I say no. I tried to grow heirloom tomatoes this year and after all that work I been eating the damn things and you know what they taste like? Damn tomatoes. No better, no worse. I thought that being homegrown and non-hybrids that they would be awesome and taste amazing and way more tomatoey than store-bought tomatoes, but they don't. They just taste like tomatoes. They are exactly like regular tomatoes except they are really small and different colors. I done dug holes and watered and fertilized and all that other jazz and I have no sense of satisfaction or accomplishment from picking and eating these tiny tomatoes. I got nothing but a bunch of ugly average-tasting but really small tomatoes. So fuck gardening I say. I am going to eat at McDonald's.

I am not in favor of yet another neglected subsite that nobody ever looks at. "Music" is of a rather broader appeal (I think most would agree) and yet, it's kind of a running joke that no one goes there. Travel likewise. Jobs. Sorry, but I think this is feature/mission creep. It might be a neat idea for your own website though. Gardenfilter.com, .org, and .net are all available.

casonb, thanks-- I've been finding stuff by going through tags (although that house-garden thing is good too), but it's really cumbersome. I'm not in on the various running jokes; all I know is that Metafilter is the first place I look for stuff (and yes, travel and jobs as well as various of the wikis), since it is a, um what's a good word? Like, I know a filter.

Filters block things. It's their primary function. Thus it is our honor-bound duty -- nay, our very purpose -- to shoot down this idea.
GardenMe would essentially be "AskMe for gardens". Matt has repeatedly agreed that "AskMe for x" is a bad pattern. The power of AskMe is that everyone sees everything, even stuff they aren't necessarily experts in (or even interested in) but might have experience with and answers for. I know things about gardening, and I have a garden. I'd be very shocked if I were interested enough to make GardenMe a part of my daily surfing.

It'd be a good place for Burn Notice posts as well. Though we'd have to cross post that to burnnotice.metafilter.com and usanetwork.metafilter.com. Hrmmm. And spiderman.metafilter.com or would that just live in samraimi.metafilter.com?
(As has been pointed out already, tags are a much better way of filtering for this information, be it a post to MetaFilter about gardening or a question about gardening in AxMe or a song about ND¢'s lackluster experience with heirloom tomatoes on Music [cortex?] or a website about gardening on Projects.)

Can't, jamaro. No yard, and everything I try to grow in containers on the sidewalk outside my apartment (except the hardy spearmint and lovely lavender) dies a terrible death. Trust me though, I am the only person in my family who is not very very fond of the tomato, but that never exempted me from helping in their obsessive growing of them. Much watering takes place at home, and those tomatoes get rave reviews from people other than me.
That said, I just re-read your post and noticed the finer details more this time. Sorry, I think we're on the same page after all. My parents live in a scorching hot place so I bet they accomplish what you're describing even though no one there would think of it as keeping the plants on the dry side. It's just what happens. I think we're talking about the same ideal conditions in different climates.

You people are all idiots. Brandywines are crap. Mortgage Lifter and Black Krim are where it's at, and Mr. Stripey grows a bunch of bulls. Do you really think Alan Greenspan lowered rates for 6 years just so you could grow your goddamn Aces and Early Girls and Better Boys? Personally, I welcome my new heirloom overlords.

I'm with orange swan- EatMe would be awesome. A garden subsite, not so much. I make my living as a gardener, I'm a horticulture student, and I would never visit because gardening arguments are teh suck. Too much voodoo in the gardening world. Science just can't compete.
PS: Potato leafed tomatoes for the foggy Bay Area are where it's at. Less surface area to host pathogens. Baia Nicchia is a local breeder of toamtoes that will ripen and taste good in San Francisco.
PPS: francesca, your squash is a) in need of pollinators, b) infested with nematodes, or c) only producing male blossoms (some squash are genetically predisposed to this). For a), at you may need to hand pollinate with a paintbrush; b) and c) aren't anything you can solve at the moment.
