Augusta meetup? June 5, 2008 8:17 AM Subscribe
Augusta, GA meetup?
So, I've just moved from Norfolk to the Augusta area and since I know no one here and nothing about the area, I figured I'd see if there were any MeFites in the area! Anyone interested in a meetup?

So close and yet so far!

Well, I was gonna suggest y'all all go pay your respects at James Brown's grave, which I'd assumed must be in Augusta, but his rightful burial place seems to be a matter of dispute...

Or y'all can come on over to Atlanta! Oooh, oooh - or meet halfway or so at the microcar museum!

I am in favor of an Atlanta meetup if it's not to far for our new Augusta mefi overlordesses.

Has there ever been a successful Atlanta meetup? I hope Augusta has better luck.

I have been meaning to go to the microcar museum (as seen on MetaFilter) but it is unfortunately closed during May, June and July. Nearby is the Sunflower Farm Festival the weekend of July 4th, though.
James Brown might not have a grave, but there is a statue.

Whoops, sorry about that weird failed linkage. (I just got drunk at the barbecue). Here's Randy's Rednecks.

Actually Augusta's only 2 hours from Savannah. If it was on Saturday or Sunday I could probably make it.
Atlanta's out for moi.

I don't know if there's ever been a successful Atlanta meetup but there should be. I am not opposed to Augusta, either, but I suspect some of the Atlanta folks wouldn't end up showing up. Plus Augusta restaurants/meetup places are not quite to the level of their Atlanta counterparts...

Nonsense, I live in Savannah, which is a bit smaller than Augusta and we have killer spots for meetups. Can't imagine Augusta not having several suitable places.

That's true if you are looking at the type of upscale place where you can spend $100 a plate on dinner and twice that on wine, but if cold beer and pizza/barbecue/what have you are what you want we can definitely find a place. Although sadiehawkinstein's suggestion of the Madison/Lake Oconee area is not bad (unless you are coming from Savannah).

Madison might work - Augusta might be tricky, but I'd try. An Atlanta meeting would also be good.

You Atlanta folks and you Augusta folks can just split the difference and meet here in Athens. I can save a table for you.

I don't care where it happens, so long as I can meet some southern MeFites. I'd prefer somewhere in the Augusta area, but if more people can make it if we do it elsewhere, perfect.

Augusta is a little too far from me... but I'm not opposed to either meeting in Atlanta or in between the two cities

Athens could work!
If Augusta would bring folks from all over, it would be just nifty. What's Stillwater Tap Room all about? Or The Soul Bar?
But if there's an Atlanta meetup, I'd love it.

The Broad Street area is known for its nightlife and tends to attract a lot of students and young professionals; it has seen a real resurgence in the past 15 years, and to a large extent it started with the Soul Bar. They often have live music; the Soul Generals played there after James Brown's Funeral. The Stillwater Tap Room is a few doors down and is one of 3 establishments partly owned by a guy I grew up with; it features an extensive selection of bottled and on tap beers and tends to feature music that tends toward bluegrass and alt-country types of bands. It is only a few years old but has a good following.
