Boston Meetup! May 16, 2008 11:21 AM   Subscribe

Let's welcome Admiral Haddock to Boston!

I thought I'd kick off the planning process since it seems like there's a lot of interest in another meetup. What's convenient for people? Somewhere in Harvard Square, maybe... John Harvard's?

Hey, good idea! I'm down for a Harvard Square meetup, but I'm also out of town for the next week and a half or so. I'll keep an eye on the thread.

Yeah! I'd love to finally be able to attend a meetup here...but I too will be out of town May 22-26.
posted by DiscourseMarker at 11:58 AM on May 16, 2008

I like the way you think, and I'll be watching this thread, too!

It's been four dry, scratchy, parched weeks since I saw you folks last.
posted by Plutor at 12:06 PM on May 16, 2008

Maybe hitting up pub trivia (list of locations) on a weeknight sometime next week would be good option? Red Line Monday at 8pm?
posted by Plutor at 12:07 PM on May 16, 2008

I’d be up for this but I’m pretty solidly busy for the next couple weeks.
posted by bondcliff at 12:11 PM on May 16, 2008

I'm down for a MeFiMeetup. I haven't met you fellows before, it'd be keen. I live in East Cambridge, so something along the Red Line is ideal for me!

I avoided the ballyhoo that was the last meetup, so I'm up for seeing folks this time around. Like Plutor I'd rather do something than, uh, talk metafilter. So +1 vote for trivia or bowling or something.

I live in Salem :( but I work in the Back Bay. I can't usually do weekends, though.
posted by mkb at 2:48 PM on May 16, 2008

If y'all are going bowling, I recommend Sacco's in Davis Square.

I'm a celebrity! Thanks for getting the conversation started, Backseat. I can't wait to meet the locals. I think anytime is fine with me (but I will need to rely on public transportation to get wherever we go!).

I'd like to come! I love bar trivia. I too am out of town from the middle of next week to the next, but if not now, then I'll keep an eye on meetups for later.
posted by Countess Elena at 5:05 PM on May 16, 2008

So I get the feeling next week is probably out for most people. What about the week of the 26th? There are a couple places around Harvard St. in Allston that do trivia if it's not too inconvenient for people to get there.
posted by backseatpilot at 5:12 PM on May 16, 2008

Count me in. Like the bar trivia idea.
posted by Melismata at 7:12 PM on May 16, 2008

I too endorse the bar trivia idea. Discourse Marker and I are former Jeopardy contestants, so it's sort of like we're ringers. (I hope we don't have to do urine testing, though, because right now, I would not pass. Although I guess testing positive for alcohol would be a qualification, not a disqualification.) Any place in Harvard Square / on the red line would be fine.

Ok then - I suggest Tommy Doyle's - the one in Harvard Square - on Wednesday the 28th. Trivia starts at 8:00.

Sound good?
posted by backseatpilot at 8:19 PM on May 16, 2008

We're in! This will be Discourse Marker's first meetup, so everybody be sure to make her feel welcome by pointing at her and making the Invasion of the Body Snatchers shrieking noise.

Damnit, I just left Cambridge for the summer.
posted by allen.spaulding at 11:35 PM on May 16, 2008

Ok, it's official now - I added it to the calendar. Let's say 7:00 or 7:30 at Tommy Doyle's in order to collect everyone before the game starts.
posted by backseatpilot at 10:39 AM on May 17, 2008

I won't be there, but both Admiral Haddock and Boston are awesome, so I give this plan a mighty thumbs up. Also, I will be in town this summer so I hope to meet some of yall!

I'd love to be there, I live close-by, but I don't have any sort of good scheduling system, go figure, so I have no idea if I'll be available. Wednesday the 28th, 8:00? It'd be good for my soul to KILL ALL IN TRIVIA BATTLE OR DIE A PROUD DEATH have a beer or two with y'all.

I think I can make it, but I might make you all lose trivia night in the process.
posted by danb at 8:47 PM on May 17, 2008

Oh damn! I'm just going to miss this!
posted by brujita at 10:23 PM on May 17, 2008

I can't make that day in particular. But I think you should keep the date and time, and make your team name something like Plutor Memorial Pancake Slippers. Or, you know, MetaFilter. Whatever you want.

I'll catch you guys next time.
posted by Plutor at 4:59 AM on May 19, 2008

Yeah, trivia night! It's on the calendar!

I'm ready for pwnage.

ooh, i could maybe make this. wait, where the hell is tommy doyle's? is this the old house of blues?
posted by rmd1023 at 3:37 PM on May 20, 2008

is this the old house of blues?

Yes, as I understand it, although HoB predates my time in Harvard Square.
posted by Horace Rumpole at 6:27 PM on May 20, 2008

The boyfriend and I will try to make it, though next week is a crazy-busy week for us.
posted by kwaller at 6:25 AM on May 21, 2008

If quite a few people do plan to show up, you may need to get to Tommy Doyle's even earlier than 7 to get tables. I've been there for trivia and it gets completely full well before 7:30, and it's especially hard to fit large groups. You may want to split into smaller teams, as Stump trivia disqualifies you from winning if there are more than six people on a team.

I don't think I can make it, but I'd love to do this if it ever comes up again. (I am also a former Jeopardy contestant and frequently play trivia in Somerville.)

After further review, I probably won't make it, but have fun!
posted by danb at 12:31 PM on May 22, 2008

actually, i can't make it. i accidentally ended up joining the circus as a stage manager and i have rehearsal that night.
posted by rmd1023 at 5:48 PM on May 24, 2008

Just bumping this up on everyone's recent activity page. Tommy Doyle's Harvard Square, tomorrow, 7:00. I will probably be in slacks and an oxford shirt looking awkward, so hopefully we'll find each other.
posted by backseatpilot at 2:49 PM on May 27, 2008

Well, I'll be wearing my Metafilter tshirt, so I should be easy to spot. (And probably looking awkward as well.)
posted by Horace Rumpole at 7:48 PM on May 27, 2008

7:00 is probably a bit early for me, but I'll get there when I can. Looking forward to it!
posted by Admiral Haddock at 5:04 AM on May 28, 2008

I'll be adding photos tomorrow (which is technically now today, but anyway...) but for those of you who missed it, we ROCKED trivia night. First place.

MeFi are the champions, my friends.

My ears are still ringing from the loud, though.
posted by DiscourseMarker at 9:02 PM on May 28, 2008

The loud of my awesome singing!

I was not able to join the team per se, but sat next to them and boozed quietly as they rode the wave of victory. It was a sight to behold! Considering the day jobs of the MeFi crew, I don't think anyone else had a chance. I can't wait for the next one! I'll get my photos online in the next day or so, too.

Thanks for the great welcome to Boston.

YES! TEH METAFLITER FTW AT TRIVIA!

May 28, 2008, MeFi Wire Service

It started out a chilly evening at Wrigley Field Tommy Doyle's, but the MeFites arrived to provide the trivial heat. "We Are Not The Cabal" took first prize, pwning a large field of contenders. The $40 gift certificate to Tommy Doyle's was given to the "7th Player" Admiral Haddock, who soon-after belted out quite an on-key rendition of the Clash's "Train in Vain" for his first karaoke evar.

Welcome to Owah Faiah Shitty! (read in a Mayah Kevin White voice.)

And yes, it was a very loud location; still, I had a wicked good time. Nice to meet you all!
posted by not_on_display at 5:41 AM on May 29, 2008

It was a great time, thanks everyone for coming out. There was talk of karaoke in the near future, maybe someone will pick up the ball on that...? We should start challenging those New Yorkers for the title of City With Most Meetups.
posted by backseatpilot at 7:59 AM on May 29, 2008

My photos are up now! A few of them were to blurry to post (my crappy old camera), but our stunning victory and Admiral Haddock's karaoke knockout have been immortalized forevah!

It was great fun meet you guys as well!

can I use any more exclamation marks?!?!?!

Yay me!

My photos should probably be up tonight.
posted by Admiral Haddock at 4:19 PM on May 29, 2008

yhbc, no beard necessary; the women in attendance were refreshingly facial-hair-free, as was backseatpilot. Whereas I need the beard and moustache so that I won't lose a drop of that sweet sweet nectar they call "beer."

And the correct way to say it is: "I wouldn't have fet in."

Banjo and I just got back from our SECRET BOSTON MEETUP. How secret was it? So secret that Horace Rumpole never even saw us wave at him! I think he was lost in Hal Sparks' dreamy, dreamy eyes (or ripped, ripped forearms, whicheva).

I just had a "secret Boston meetup" with myself.

I may have said too much there. Must not hit post...
posted by not_on_display at 8:55 PM on May 31, 2008

Sorry, Banjo and Robocop, no snub intended. I was gazing fixedly into the middle distance struck dumb with such terror that that moronic hack that went on before Hal would try to engage me in some fashion that it was hard for me to take any notice of my surroundings. (Note to Chris Bonno: your insistence on repeating and spelling your name 400 times had the desired effect; I will never forget your name, and I shall curse it with my dying breath.)

I went to the show mainly to accompany the Queer As Folk-addicted Discourse Marker, but I will say I thought Hal Sparks did a pretty good job.

sounds like it was fun. sorry i couldn't be there.

Horace: did you pay your portion of the bill in gold coin? What the shit! (Thanks! Next time, I expect everyone to show up with two-dollar bills.)
posted by not_on_display at 6:25 PM on June 2, 2008

Whoops, it wasn't Horace who gave me the Sacagawea dollar. (D'oh!) In any case, it ended up being given to my son via the Tooth Fairy. Which I am not.
posted by not_on_display at 4:06 PM on June 3, 2008

Oh, that was me. I got something like $15 worth of presidential and Sacagawea coins from the commuter rail ticket machine a couple weeks ago. I am glad it went to a good cause!
