Color coded usernames April 29, 2008 7:58 AM Subscribe
I'm terrible at remembering names. It would be great to have usernames that are favorites show up as a different color. Is there a way?
This is definitely one of those "greasemonkey should handle this" features because I think it would be distracting and weird to have it be a regular way the site operated.

In fact, there is a Greasemonkey script that does it -- one color for your contacts, another for people who contact you, a third for mutual contacts. I think it is MeFi Navigator?

As somebody who's also terrible at remembering names, it's probably because you don't really care about other people that much.
Don't sweat it, just call everybody dude or something.

This idea is cool. Dibs on one of the first 256 (the rest can suffer in their jocks). I want to be 'earth' colored [I hate that I had to drop the u to be accepted, there are so many things that are Amarentric].

This is a great idea.
How about having a button on the profile page that would give you a color grid like the one you get to choose text color in Gmail, where any member could choose the color any other member's name would appear in thereafter.
When you go to the profile page the color the user's name appears in changes right now, maybe a spectrum of colors wouldn't be to hard to add.
I'd use it on a per post basis to follow the contributions of individuals and groups of individuals (sort of a low-tech threading) and on a global basis to help make sure I didn't miss the contributions of the people I follow closely.

Use a highlighter. That way it's easy to find posters or comments that you want to remember, or that you thought were useful. They make a huge variety of colors now, so it's easy to have a bunch, and you can draw a key on your profile to help you remember which color is which.
I also find it's useful to use an industrial-grade hole-punch to punch the threads for the day so that I can place them in organized notebooks. (My first few months on Metafilter weren't pretty-- little slips of paper all over the place with double posts I'd forgotten to shred, and favorites sticky notes falling off files everywhere and littering the floor!-- and I imagine it's the same for most new MeFites.) It's important to remember to set the printer for double-sided printing, since paper is becoming prohibitively expensive.

The lyric from Dylan's Brownsville Girl,
Well I'm
standing in line in the rain to see a movie
starring Gregory Peck Yeh but you know it's not
the one I had in mind He's got a new one out now I
don't even know what it's about But I'll see him in
anything so I'll stand in line.
sorta describes my adoration of Plutor's scripts. I really thought I had them all, but somehow I'd missed this one.
