We have a "joined" date in user profiles. Can we have a "left" date for the pushers of the big red button?
Why? It's a vanishingly small percentage of the population who have actually closed their own accounts at this point; we don't really need a "banned on:" field for folks who were ejected of their own accord; and a click into their activity page will give you a date on their actual functional departure from the site. It doesn't seem like a thing that really begs for inclusion as a standard field.

Whats with this obsession over button-pushers? Plenty of people have left the site for good, abandoning their accounts, without ever pushing any button.
Its not hard to get 'last active' given that its fast to check all three subsites. Or did you mean "last looked at the site" matt? That is creepy.

OK, here's a better answer. I noticed that konolia left, and it wasn't immediately obvious why. A "left" date would allow me to more quickly scan her recent stuff and possibly find what was the straw that finally broke that particular camel's back.
On preview: I'm merely wondering about people who flipped the switch on their accts, not any sort of "last logged in" or "last viewed." That IS creepy.

It's time to lose that button. I don't know whose bright idea it was to implement that feature, but it was bad, like leaving razor blades around on suicide watch. Maybe we just want that kind of person to leave us alone, but really, many, many here are just a twitch away from being that person. Up the ante, require an email to Matt to kill one's self off. Please. Too many times it seems someone has a moment of crises and then offs themselves. Not good.

I think clicking the button should automatically turn your userpage into a "wall of shame" where other members could taunt you in clever and hurtful ways. Then the best taunts could be collected in a wiki, and perhaps turned into a book. We can all share the royalties.

You would get some genuinely meaningful info from those leaving because "I'm moving to a tiny island where there is no internet access" or "If my boss catches me MetaFiltering one more time, he won't fire me, he'll kill me" or "I'm just getting too old for this" or "I'm starting to not like myself anymore, I might come back if I find my better self". And if they just say "USER X is mean to me! Waaaaah!" or "You people all suck! I'm going to LGF where they love me!", well, that's informative too, and the nastiest messages will just remind us that there are some people we shouldn't bother caring about. If somebody regrets the message they leave on their way out, then the only way to wipe it clean is to come back. And, not to get too serious, but in the extreme case of somebody actually having a life-threatening flame-out, a good-bye note that looks like a suicide note might just be the first best warning anybody will get.
It also will get many "leavers in a huff" to stop and think to themselves about what they're doing and why they're doing it and maybe change their mind, particularly those who might otherwise end up with Quitters Remorse and ask the mods to be reinstated a few hours later. I think in addition to the other counts like number of comments and favorites, each user should have "number of other users they've driven to leave".
Or better yet, "kills", with icons like the enemy flags below the cockpit of WWII fighter planes.

Truth be told, I really like wendell's idea. It seems like flame-outs are all the rage right now, and it just seems depressing to go combing through recent threads to find out what happened to someone whom I felt (and it feels odd to say it) connected to through this site. Like, I wasn't ever really in the same discussions with quonsar, but konolia, dirtynumbangelboy, and jonmc are a little shocking to see go. If they had something to say in their own words, I'd like to see it.
I too wonder if there's really a need for the big red button to begin with, but I guess sometimes you just need to be able to "slam" the phone down, as it were. I'd just like to see the flame-outs end completely, really.

I think it should be like Spiderwire's idea above, but it done more like the Oscars "people who died this year" thingy, with soaring orchestral music, and stillframes from a characteristic thread, and lots of oohs and ahhs from the crowd. It'd be perfect - there'd be very famous Ingmar Bergmans and Heath Ledgers, and then the sound editors and other nobodies.

I would like to formerly request the removal of the "This account is disabled" text from disabled accounts.
If someone wants to leave, its no one else's business. The ceaseless drama-queenery and attention-whoring is getting tiring.

Hey, when you click on the "Keep your account" button, can you display something sweet like, "Thanks for staying?" That would be awesome.

I think this is the biggest problem, when a user is just browsing throught the site, feeling fine and suddenly find out that some user quit and the natural reaction is "What?! Why?! When?!"
The only real way to "solve" this is to start a "users who have left" site, something similar to the deleted threads site, where a person can check to see who's left. Ideally, it would include why they left or even better, a non negative statement by the original poster stating why they left.

Brandon, I think that would be a good idea if it were run by someone that wasn't a mod. (I'm not sure who runs the deleted threads site.) Otherwise, I feel it would turn into a popularity contest akin to the Oscars in memoriam segment.

Brandon, why not maybe just make some notes on the wiki? Doing a respectful job of summing up departures there would probably be okay, and as an informational archive rather than a Site it'd have less problems with the potential "popularity contest" weirdness that spec80 just nodded toward.
