I just added so many "acquaintances" and "met" to my contact list! February 13, 2008 6:51 PM   Subscribe

So I see on the meet up side bar that there are two meet ups on the 29th, and there were three on the 9th.

Is there a record for the most meet ups in one day? Is attendance taken at these meetings, and then one could figure out the largest number EVER of mefites introducing themselves? What was the biggest meet up in history? Are there legendary meet up locations/stories?

The biggest meetup that I've been to was the MeFi 8th Anniversary Party this past August where Matt rented out the video game arcade and there was an open bar and free video games all night. No I am not kidding. I'd like to make the next anniversary party have some sort of simultaneity going on so that there could be a round the clock round the world sun never sets on MetaFilter party for nearly two straight days. Did you go see Brad Sucks/frenetic?

I say we connect these concurrent meetups via webcam streaming.

I say we conduct live readings of classic MetaFilter threads.

I say we reenact classic MetaFilter threads with hand puppets.

at the Vancouver meetup, which was in a hipster-y bar, myopicman and I definitely took to calling people "fedora cases", after the infamous AskMe/MeTa thread kerfuffle.

also, I almost made a sign for the meetup that would have said "NOT MATT HAUGHEY? YOU'RE IN THE RIGHT PLACE" but didn't have time after work.

and I went to a meetup there in October and except for you two [and one other person?] it was an entirely new group of folks at this one. Wacky!

How much is Jessamyn's appearance fee? Maybe the Montreal faction can chip in for the 29th.

Man, I need to get myself an appearance fee.

If Montreal's jacking jessamyn, can Ottawa book the 'tex for this Sunday?

I wonder if there's a Guinness world record for Biggest Meetup of Website Users.

Can I get myself a non-appearance fee? It'd be easier.

I'm sure you can find people who will pay you to stay away from them.

jessamyn: the only repeats from that meetup were me and myopicman, who, in a series of strange coincidences, I had run into numerous times that week. I thought I had hallucinated earlier in the week (I hadn't) and it turns out we share a number of in-person acquaintances, including radiocontrolled, who works at the radio station where myopicman has a radio show (two floors above where I work on the student newspaper) and who only found out about the meetup because I ran into her at a beer garden the day before, introduced her as a MeFite to myopicman, who I was running into the second time that week after having met him at the meetup you were at.

also, I met mek at a house party and didn't know he was a MeFite until he mentioned skipping going to Whistler with a bunch of nerds to drink with us.
Similarly, stray and I were in the same student group for a while before I figured out that she was stray.

in summary: it's a weirdly tiny world at times, but one full of good people.
and speaking of good people, when're you visiting next?

I am actually going to be in Montreal on a crazy flyby today and tomorrow but the library school students have me mostly booked up. If anyone wants to consider breakfast on Saturday, I'm all ears. (where breakfast is something in the 9 or 10 range and near the Best Western downtown).

the radio station where myopicman has a radio show

totally weird, I have been listening to that radio show this week. I'll let you know when I am next in the area for sure, but I'm just about as likely to look up your family in Fiji as I am to get back out to BC in the immediate future.

The more I think about it, the more I like loiseau's idea. Have several concurrent meetups all being webcast to each other via laptops set up in the bars. It would be a hugely geeky moment to be in Milwaukee, chatting with the wonderful people here, and turn to the camera and say "Hi" to folks in San Francisco, New York, and Las Vegas, and then have them say "howdy" back, and then we all toast.

Hell, we could have interactive cross continental drinking games. And if people were willing to work outside normal time zones, we could have intercontinental drinking games.

That would rule!

I am so sad that I will be in China (or broke from being in China) during the next Uber Meetup. A concurrent meetup sounds pretty damn cool, too, though.

Vancouver's slowly starting to spook me out on how often I run into acquaintances. I know this happened from time to time in other large cities, and it's super common for me to be in a smaller town for a few days and get to know people, but almost any given week, I bump into someone in this terminal city that I wouldn't figure on being at that spot at that time. Most odd, like serendipity as a way to set your clock.

As meetups go, I'll give a pre-emptive shoutout to all to the Tokyo crew. I know sakura season is nearing, so hopefully any outdoor plans for a meetup coincide nicely with the blossoming of the cherries.

I have been listening to that radio show this week.

I played two songs made by friends this past Monday. I finally got emails from them and they were "dismayed" to hear those old wacky pieces. I'm reckoning future tributes will be condensed and flippant then. Oh, and I'm glad someone's listening.

Anyone else want to meet up with Jessamyn and me for a Saturday breakfast before she leaves? Someplace in downtown Montreal around 10 – she wants a good coffee, at least.

(I'd have put this in a new posting, but I posted here within the last 7 days, so am taking my chances here.)

I heard that Phil Collins attended two meetups on two different continents in the same day!!!

I might be able to do this -- did you have anywhere in mind? I'm not so knowledgable about downtown and that's not my usual stomping ground, so I only know about places like Eggspectation and hoary old Cora's.

However, if we could convince Jessamyn to come to Mile End, I'm always looking for an excuse to go to Senzala... oh so yum.
posted by loiseau at 5:41 PM on February 14, 2008

I'd prefer Mile End too, but she doesn't know the city at all so it needs to be somewhere down around Peel and Ste-Catherine, ideally someplace with good coffee and viennoiseries. I'm not downtown in the morning myself much so am asking around.

Yeah sorry only if you drive me there. The big issue is that my car is in a parking lot here and has to be out by noon. I have guests at my place in VT so I sort of need to get out of here at that time anyhow. So I was hoping I could get up, check out and go someplace nearby to get coffee and a muffin with y'all and then head out. I'm thinking QUALITY time since quantity may be lacking. Next time I swear I'll be more flexible.
