Just wanted to express a very sincere and public thanks to hadjiboy for the second Hyderabad Meetup. And thanks for the gift!
Photo. Not only was hadjiboy sweet enough to meet this crazy, random American and his wife, but he showed up the next day at my hotel, gift in hand and took us on a tour of this wonderful city. What a guy!

Yeah, but let's see how hospitable he'll be at the nth meetup...

I have to admit that I did not welcome Meatbomb with gifts when he visited Amsterdam.
Thankfully Meatbomb seemed perfectly able to find the typically Dutch treats on his own.

jessamyn, you may have a candidate there for Antipodal Moderator... At GMT +5:30, he's 10-and-a-half hours away from both U.S. coasts. In his just-over-a-year at the Filter he has grown from a goofy newbie to a distinguished contributor at impressive speed. He describes himself in profile as "Occupation: Professional Timewaster"; that sounds like a solid qualification. And even though it had nothing to do with his choice of MeFiName, I would gladly take orders from Jonny Quest's sidekick. The only thing really working against him is the same thing I objected to with a mod in Mali... Hyderabad sounds... well, bad (or at least a place where the water is bad). Maybe he could move a couple miles to Kapra. That place sounds good, Frankly.
Disclaimer: Yes, I jump to strange geographical conclusions based on the sound of places' names. Which makes it odd that I live close to a place that sounds like Abysmal Beach.

antipodean moderator? last time i checked, india was still in the northern hemisphere.
and what was the gift? an askme thread? you should have taken slarty to one of those famous hyderabadi sweet-shops instead.

I'm not sure we should be looking for a mod with a pre-existing bias against podes. The pode caste once played an enriching role on this very sub-site, albeit intermittently and notable more in its absence of late.

I believe the implication is that the gift was one or more of the items suggested within the thread.

Ha! Yeah, I went with Shantaram, that was suggested by dhruva, tellurian and Ubu, only because I really identified with the book and thought John would too. I had Maximum City and Are You Experienced? as secondary options if Shanta wasn’t available. Luckily it was. Thanks a lot for the help guys!
(wendell, we could always call it Bhagya Nagaram, but I doubt that would change anything;))

Also, I have to thank Saltry Bartfast for gifting me the cool Metafilter T-shirt that he'd gotten for himself. Thanks a lot, dude!

oh, good! shantaram really is unique & special. the one problem i had with the book was the author's tendency to slip in all these glib little half-baked philosophical truisms from time to time (i can't remember any, so i'll make one up to give people a taste: "small men count success in terms of the pain they avoid; big men count it in the pleasures they achieve") but it's such a great story, full of detail & observations about india, that i can forgive the author his little indiscretions.
that, and he sounds like one hard motherfucker, and i don't want to get on the wrong side of him.

Three cheers for hadjiboy! And extra cheers for choosing Shantaram as Slarty Bartfast's gift. It's an excellent book, and I thought about nthing the recommendation in the AskMe thread, but then I read the MetaTalk thread about nthing and decided against it lol.

I echo the cheers for hadjiboy!
He got me digging out my unread copy of Shantaram that I bought 2 years ago.
I will be starting on it soon. It is a thick book. But reading the blurbs, I remember why I bought it then at an airport bookshop.

Oh YAY MeFil2. And, like thirteenkillier, I thought it was Meh-Fie with the Fi like Hi-Fi. So it's Mee-Fi?
See hadjiboy, you're loved. madamjujujive has a crush on you, jessamyn thinks you're a sweetheart, I love you and now others know you're a man of impeccable good manners, generous and considerate too, which is what I've known for a long time now.
And Slarty Blartfest, you sound like a really nice guy too. What did you think of Hyderabad? It's such a big name in the outsourcing world, I've wondered how it's changed in the last ten years.
By the way hadjiboy, you said you'd been back in India the last 15 years, do you mind if I ask where you were before that?
