Portland Maine and The King of Kong Informal Meetup January 10, 2008 6:54 AM Subscribe
Any other Maine-folk planning to see The King of Kong at SPACE Gallery?
I'm planning on going and it seems like the sort of thing some people here might be attending, so just wanted to say that if you see me there, please feel free to come on over and meet me. I will probably be dressed in some soft of video-game appropriate shirt, but I don't think there is an actual dress code.
More info on the event:
One of the best reviewed films of 2007, The King of Kong follows an epic battle between a middle-school science teacher and a hot sauce mogul as they vie for the Guinness World Record on the arcade classic, Donkey Kong. Galen Richmond's one-man-band Computer At Sea coaxes pop songs and glitch breaks out of a tangle of aftermarket Casios, repurposed videogame machines and handmade electronics. Listeners are invited to play along on a circuit-bent Nintendo Entertainment System. Music before and after the film.
Doors open at 7pm, I plan to get there and buy tickets before the music starts at 7:30.

What Astro Zombie said. Go see it, even if you're not a video game nerd.

Looks like I and Lipstick Thespian (of MetaChat fame) will be there. Is the Space that place at Longfellow Square?

Right in that area - on Congress Street (538), 'twixt the LL Bean Outlet and MECA.
See you there!

It is a fantastic film -- you couldn't write characters that melodramatic* -- the villian practically has a goddamned twirly mustache. Best doc I've seen since Murderball. Highly recommended.
*Sure, clever editing can go a long way -- still, this ain't no Laguna Beach

I have to attend my niece's third birthday party in the afternoon, but if I get back in time and am not worn out by too much cake and My Little Pony, I will be there!

Gee, I'm like three blocks from there now, but I'll be back in NYC by Sat night.
But as long as we have Portland in the house, I'd be up for some kind of beer-centered meetup in the Old Port tomorrow after work.

I'll be driving up from NH Saturday for this - wouldn't want to do it twice in 2 days (I know, we get lazy here where the quality of life is so good....) But am generally up for beer in Portland, as well.

Anyone from MA want a ride/to carpool? And are you Mainesters meeting somewhere then going to the show? If I'm going to spend 2 hours driving up from Boston, I'm going to eat the hell out of some Maine Lobster.

Looks like fun, and now that I've figured out the dates, I'll be there. Anybody want to meet at the Brian Boru beforehand for a Guinness and something to eat? (Sorry, Eid, no lobster) @6? Just a couple blocks from Space Gallery.

This was great fun, a great movie, and great company. Portland Rocks, Billy Mitchell suxx0rs, and it was a pleasure to meet all of you/see you again. Thanks mikepop for proposing it.
Also: no pictures were taken. No shoutouts were made. Does it count? Are we shunned?

What a good time! And what a fun bunch of people! "King of Kong" was even more engaging and hilarious than I'd heard, but seeing it with such a convivial group made for a great evening. You guys are funny!
The flexibility of this outing --- a chance to meet early at Brian Boru's, or at the gallery, and the option to go out after or not --- felt very comfortable and easy, too. I'll look forward to doing this again, and seeing all of you soon.

Jesus, I reviewed this movie for a local paper several weeks ago and gave it a thumbs-up. Had no idea it was so badly manipulated. Let that be a lesson, me!
