Metafilter: The Drink January 6, 2008 2:48 PM Subscribe
Metafilter needs an official drink. Let's brainstorm.
It needs to be something real (no Windex, etc.), and maybe something made out of ingredients bars have, so we could order it at meetups? Although something one could make at home while trolling the site would be fun, too!

My nominees:
1. He'Brew Jewbilation (I didn't name it). It's specially brewed for their 11th anniversary. It has 11 hops and 11 malts in it and it's 11% alcohol and it has a picture of an amp dial that goes up to 11 on the label. Thankfully the 1pt 6oz bottles do not cost $11.
2. Screaming Nazi: Jagermeister, Rumple Minze and Goldshlager shaken and poured into a double shooter.
3. Jameson's. Just because.

I've no suggestions for the time being, but whatever comes up should be obscurely and obfuscationally named. Like a potable in-joke.
Back in 2000, I attended a small-ish international meet-up with some guys from the gay youth IRC channel I frequented. We stayed at a hostel and were getting our amateur bartending on one night (all of legal drinking age). The result was this green concoction involving orange juice and Malibu rum, and probably some Curaçao that made the thing roughly the same green as Ninja Turtle radioactive ooze. We named it Radioactive Head because... well, dirty minds at work.
So we were out on the patio with our Radioactive Head. Some jock-ish fratboy types were also lounging there. Overhearing us mentioning the name of the drink, one of them remarks:
"You guys must be Radiohead fans, right?"
Following much shifty glances amongst ourselves, we replied "Yes... Yes. That's it."

To quote myself: AskMe is a Pinot Noir. Difficult, but rewarding. Usually makes a good impression, might even get you laid, occasionally, but can be intoxicating in excess. Has been known to leave a killer hangover the next day. Good with Gouda.
MeFi is a beer. Sometimes a hearty craftsman or clever micro brew, sometimes a simple, honest beverage. Lively. May lead to questionable epiphanies, drunken laughter, or public humiliation and years of regret. Good with Philly Cheesesteaks.
MeTa is tequila & moonshine. Sweet, sweet liquid death. Good with a living will and sticky restroom floor tiles.

Anything will work as long as it's pretentious and ostentatiously liberal. How about one of those cocktails with a "-tini" suffix? The ones that have nothing to do with a martini except the inclusion of vodka and a hard-to-drink-from glass? That sounds perfect.
So:
2oz of vodka made by poor people but which poor people cannot afford
1/2 oz Fair Trade espresso
a splash of wine (not for the flavor but for the homonym)
a splash of lager (because actual piss would be unappetizing and crass)
Strain over ice into a martini-style glass with an interesting but crippling crooked stem, garnish with a lychee.

Get chuq on the line for this, or there will be blood.
Beetlejuice, Beetlejuice, Beetlejuice! *materialize*
Right off the top of my little round head, I'd suggest this one, because it's a fabulous drink, because you should be able to order it in a good bar (and if the bar doesn't have ingredent no. 2, you should chide them and get them to order some), because they should be squeezing fresh juices anyway, and because 'round these parts everybody always has to have ...
The Last Word
3/4 ounce gin (a robust one, Tanqueray or Beefeater).
3/4 ounce maraschino liqueur (Luxardo or Maraska).
3/4 ounce green Chartreuse.
3/4 ounce freshly squeezed lime juice.
Combine with cracked ice in a cocktail shaker. Shake vigorously for 10-12 seconds.
Strain into a chilled cocktail glass. No garnish.
This is a fantastic drink.

1 shot freshly squeezed lime juice (The Green)
1 shot sugar syrup

I don't know what our cocktail(s) should be. But in a minute, I'm going to make myself a Dark and Stormy (good gingerbeer + Gosling's Black Seal rum), and on the first warm day, I'm going to break out the Sarticious gin, which we got as a gift recently. (Made in Santa Cruz! Hi, Ambrosia Voyeur!)

I just don't think badmouthing people who put ice in their drinks or drink mixers in general, is permitted to someone who's recommended a drink that includes a liquor with dainty little pieces of gold in it.
How come I can eat whatever the hell I want but when I go to the bar suddenly I have to drink warm well scotch or else I'm some kind of pansy?

Also, you should always have a different drink onhand to switch to when an outsider walks by.
And you should feel kind of weird when you see someone you don't know drinking one.
And it should be illegal to make one for yourself.

Is it blue? chuq? I think not.
Thing is, blue drinks have a tendency to be undrinkable. Cheap blue Curaçao, bleh.
It's green, that's close. :)
If you'd like a terrific (un)official MeTa drink that's grey, there's this one:
The Jupiter Cocktail
1-1/2 ounces gin.
1/2 ounce dry vermouth.
1 teaspoon Parfait Amour liqueur.
1 teaspoon orange juice.
The color of the drink is an ashen grey, and you have to be careful not to overdo it with the Parfait Amour, which in too-large quantities tastes like grape bubble gum marshmallows. But in this small amount and in this balance, it's a great drink.
MaryDellamorte, I'm with ya. Arrogant Bastard can be the offical brew, alongside the offical cocktail!

1 measure Licor 43
1/2 measure blue Curaçao
3 measures milk
Ice
Shake and serve with a straw. Should taste like Orange Julius.
Doesn't get you drunk but a lot of them will.
Otherwise, I'd suggest a tall glass of water as the official drink of Metafilter, to represent the tall glass of water we always pause, think, and drink long from before rashly hitting the "Post Comment" button anyway.

I can't speak to the perfect MeFi drink, or the best beverage for a meetup, but if we are talking about drinks that best reflect the site itself, Metatalk would have to be a glass of bourbon, no ice. A bit of cigar ash floating in it, served with a side of pain pills; chewed, not swallowed.
Properly consumed, it should be drank under a bare, swinging lightbulb, whilst wearing old chinos and a stained t-shirt.
And something ironic like "What a Wonderful World" needs to be playing on the jukebox.

THE BERLIN STATION CHIEF
created by The Policy Hut
The World's Best Martini Recipe, 1996 (Shaken Not Stirred Martini Awards)
What follows is a recipe for what we call the "Station Chief" -- a martini originally mentioned
by Norman Mailer in his novel Harlot's Ghost where it's the favorite drink of the CIA Station Chief in 1956 West Berlin.
2 oz. Bombay Sapphire Gin
1/2 oz. single malt scotch
GARNISH: lemon peel
Fill shaker with ice, rinse scotch over the cubes. At this point, to be impressive, you can casually throw the single malt into the sink (to scare observers). If you consider this a waste, use less scotch and don't throw it out. Pour in the gin and mix until very cold. Rub lemon peel around the bottom of the martini glass, leave peel in the glass, and pour martini into the glass. Let stand for a few seconds, and discard lemon peel.
It's got Bombay Sapphire. It's got scotch. It's civilized and yet not afraid to get rough. It will put fish in your pants. This, ladies and gentlemen, is a good Metatini candidate.

A Pangalactic Gargleblaster might be a good choice. While the fictional drink in the Hitchhiker's Guide describes it as being "rather like having your brains smashed out with a slice of lemon, wrapped around a large gold brick," the version I enjoyed at an Ottawa bar called Zaphod Beeblebrox was a deliciously toned-down adaptation. The recipe was such:
1 oz Jack Daniel's® Tennessee whiskey
1 oz peach schnapps
4 - 6 oz orange juice
1 splash Blue Curacao liqueur
The result is well-named, tasty, quirky, and even blue in colour. What better drink for Metafilter? Bottoms up!

For the Tokyo meetups, it's gotta be shochu. Not that chu-hai crap, good shochu with a bit of hot water.

The water suggested above is definitely the right one. Symbolizes what we have in common and how much we differ.

I demand to be allowed to put ice in my drink. Civilization, with all of its many discontents is just that and no more, ice in your drink. Got fuck all to do with testosterone or whatever.
My metafilter drink is stoli from the freezer or Laphroaig and two small ice cubes. Y'all get yourselves whatever you want and maybe we better eat something soon, I'm starting to feel like yelling at a cop.

It would have to be a cocktail made by mixing together every single cocktail ever invented, adding up to a sweet, indistinct slosh to be rectified in vain by mixing it 1 to 10 with Pimm's, then multiplied by 5 with the best dry gin and finally served 2 to 1 with extra dry Champagne. All the best minds would contribute and regret it simultaneously. This would produce a revolting fruit punch even worse than the original, indistinct slosh. And yet, given its expense and democratic nature, it would be have its apologists and arguments would break out about whether it should just be poured down the drain or consumed ice-cold with clothes-pegged nostrils so as to reap the benefits of its high alcohol content without actually having to taste it. Eventually someone would ask "What else can we drink?" and everyone would go back to their old habits, none the wiser and yet slightly drunker and more bitter than before.
