All I am saying, is give posts a chance December 21, 2007 11:08 AM Subscribe
At first I was kinda surprised the video in 67602 got dumped on in comments. There is nothing intrinsically bad here. It's actually rather professionally done, it feels very much like something that was produced for television. I strongly suspect the fault here is with the FPP.
(Yeah, it's another thread about post writing style, but hopefully from a different-enough angle. I'm hoping this is taken more as a suggestion to new users than a mandate kind of thing, especially since I'm not exactly prolific myself....)
All posters desire their links to be followed, right? (Well, except maybe hama7. I KID DON'T WITH THE HURT!*) Metafilter is filled with all kinds of people. Almost anything you can post to the front will be disliked, or occaisionally even liked, by someone. The way I see it, a FPP is kind of like an advertisement, but a dual-edged one, one in which you're trying to attract the people who will enjoy your post, and give those who won't enough information to go on so that they'll be able to skip it.
(Yeah, I know, we should expose ourselves to new perspectives and ideas, be more enlghtened, etc. But that doesn't completely wash in this case, does it? I can perfectly understand someone not being interested in The Obnoxious Anime Program Of The Week, but I don't think that means it should never be on the front page. I think everyone has things like that, and there's nothing wrong with it.)
Just because a post doesn't get deleted doesn't mean it's as good as it could be. I'm surprised, sometimes, by the things that have been on the Metafilter front page that I would have liked but skipped over, and eventually had to come across from other sources. I refresh the homepage enough that I see the surface text, at least, of nearly everything that scrolls by. If I find something excessively awesome through another site, then come to Metafilter to make a post about it, and I find in the dupe search that it was already linked a couple of weeks ago, I feel like a disservice was done, both to me and to the original site.
Because of the no-dupe rule, a link only has one shot on Metafilter. To those who enjoy the meme and want to bring it to others who might enjoy it too (which is the entire point of the Blue, to my understanding), it's important that that guy who posts it first does his homework.
Let us know about the creators. Tell us about the meme's history: is it interesting because it was made by just a couple of guys? Is it a parody of something else? Is the link a flash video? It'd be nice to not have to point at it and read the URL to find out.
Most of us (obviously not me, but most of us) are really super busy people, and we don't have the time to sort through every post that comes to rest here each day. All I'm asking is, just give us who would enjoy your post something to go on, some hook, some way to recognize it in the sea of other posts. Is that so wooong?
I discovered after writing this that hama7's account has been disabled. Ouch.

The best way to improve FPPs is to post good ones as examples. Or so I've heard that last dozen times someone has griped about how a bad FPP can destroy a good subject.

I disagree JHarris - much of my enjoyment of MeFi is the serendipity of not quite knowing what lies behind the link. Often a quick look at the comments gives all the background you need (and will definitely provide views on whether its worthwhile).

I don't think that fpp hurt the videos' reception at all. I think a lot of people said that it was a very well animated and voice acted piece, especially for something done by a couple guys on their own. They also said that the writing was a bunch of really obvious and overused nerd jokes, and in my humble they're very right. Although the video response was hysterical. But it's true that none of those jokes in the manger vid were ones they thought of, and the ultimate narrative didn't make a whole lot of sense or go anywhere interesting. No nativities in a public space? Why did they fight? What was the point of watching some nerds get slightly bruised by some other nerds whose only apparent characteristic is a willingness to abandon role playing for an opportunity to hit people with sticks? The writing really wasn't the video's strong point. Not sure what the fpp text could have done to mask that.

I didn't actually see anyone specifically slamming the post. A couple of people didn't find the videos as funny as some of the others, but how often do we see complete agreement on what [is good] here or on the blue?
I guess I don't understand the call-out, the links we not misleading, the videos were pretty funny, and most people in the thread either said so, said that they acknowledged the quality, but didn't find it funny, or just didn't like it.
In other words, pretty much every other thread in the blue.

But they're lacking context, Mr. Nog. This could well have been another LOLCATfest, and we all know how well those go over here. Anyway, there is nothing else I can say in response to your argument that I didn't already say in the more inside text.
The video does go overboard with the faux-anime closing, and the Sailor Moon-reference rose thing. But the nativity scene/LARP mixup seems okay from this end. Maybe the crap detector isn't calibrated, I don't know....

ADDENDUM to previous posts
1.0 Rationale:
Now that I've sobered up I feel somewhat ashamed for crapping in this thread. It was juvenile and completely inappropriate, and in addition to that the aforementioned posts contains a number of factual errors. In order to maintain the integrity of MetaTalk as a useful archival resource these errors need to be addressed. This addendum to posts 492371 and 492374 is my humble attempt to set the record straight.

This addendum to posts 492371 and 492374 is my humble attempt to set the record straight.
2.0 Addendum Body:
- 2nd bullet: I now realize that most MeFi users are well aware of bandwidth issues, and that calling attention to the potential hazards of following a video link might be considered patronizing to some. Apologies for that.
- 4th bullet: the connection between cheese creation and sinus infections is tangential at best. In future I'll do my best to provide more relevant links.
- 5th bullet: while doing a Google search for a picture of a small child enjoying cheese I came upon this random blog. Only later, after more careful review, did I discover that some aspects of this blog might be considered misogynistic. So if any of you gals want to object, well hey, you just do your little thing.
- The "Cheese and Grandfather Clocks" link should be edited to just "Grandfather Clocks". Cortex, if you would get on that, the community would really appreciate it.
- 2nd comment: The initial "J" should actually be "I", and the first "to" should be "too". I feel I've contributed to the downward slide in our community's usual high standards here. Basically, I dropped the ball. To be blunt, I fucked up and massively, at a time when all of you were really counting on me. Mea culpa, I throw myself on the mercy of the MetaTalk fuckos. kthxbye.

I'm sorry Meatbomb, I am unconvinced that I'm wrong. I didn't ask everyone to explain every last detail of their posts, I asked that they just say what the heck it is they're posting about, and why we should care.
If someone posts something I would like, but I don't click through, then on some level they have failed. Have I failed in that case too? Maybe, but I'm not the one making the post. And no one else can make it better in the future.

For those of you who didn't get the point of the OP, I wrote a short essay that I believe summarizes the main points:
An essay on MetaFilter post writing
The subject of MetaFilter post writing is a controversial issue. The constantly changing fashionable take on MetaFilter post writing demonstrates the depth of the subject. Remarkably MetaFilter post writing is heralded by shopkeepers and investment bankers alike, leading many to state that its influence on western cinema has not been given proper recognition. Inevitably feelings run deep amongst those most reliant on technology, who form the last great hope for our civilzation. At the heart of the subject are a number of key factors. I plan to examine each of these factors in detail and and asses their importance.
Social Factors
Comparisons between Roman Society and Medieval Society give a clear picture of the importance of MetaFilter post writing to developments in social conduct. I will not insult the readers inteligence by explaining this obvious comparison any further. Back when Vealinger reamarked ‘the power struggle will continue while the great tale of humanity remains untold’ [1] he globalised an issue which had remained buried in the hearts of our ancestors for centuries. Difference among people, race, culture and society is essential on the survival of our world, however MetaFilter post writing bravely illustrates what we are most afraid of, what we all know deep down in our hearts.
Primarily MetaFilter post writing builds trust among the people. If society has a favourite child, it is MetaFilter post writing.
Economic Factors
The preceding section may have shed some light on society but to really understand man you must know how he spends his money. We will study the JTB-Guide-Dog model, which I hope will be familiar to most readers.
Inflation + Cheese - Avg GDP = MetaFilter post writing.
The statistics make it clear that MetaFilter post writing is a major market factor. My personal view is that inflation will eventually break free from the powerful influence of MetaFilter post writing, but not before we see a standardised commercial policy for all. A sharp down turn in middle class investment may lead to changes in the market.
Political Factors
Politics has in some areas been seen to embrace an increasing ananiathesis of intergovernmentalism leading to neo-functionalism. Placing theory on the scales of justice and weighing it against practice can produce similar results to contrasting 0
To quote nobel prize winner Aaron T. Time 'I don't believe in ghosts, but I do believe in democracy.' [2] I argue that his insight into MetaFilter post writing provided the inspiration for these great words. It is a well known 'secret' that what prompted many politicians to first strive for power was MetaFilter post writing.
Is MetaFilter post writing politically correct, in every sense? Each man, woman and to a lesser extent, child, must make up their own mind.
Conclusion
To conclude MetaFilter post writing has, and will continue to be a major building block for the world in which we live. It collaborates successfully, influences the influencers, and never hides.
The final say goes to the award winning Uma Love Hewitt: 'MetaFilter post writing is the new rock and roll! And the new opera!' [3]

I really hate the word "eponysterical". Mostly because while their may be some humorous contrast between the comment and the user name, thus justifying the the 'epony'. They are rarely hysterically funny, or even all that funny.
Perhaps a better term would be "Nominal Humor"

I'm holing up in a trailer in Idaho.
A step up from Utah, I'd imagine.

Figures. I go away to the middle of fucking nowhere for a week and on Day 2 of my vacation, I check in and find out a post of mine gets called out (kinda) in MeTa. So naturally I have to respond. And since my response is actually pretty short and sweet, I will.
"Let us know about the creators. Tell us about the meme's history: is it interesting because it was made by just a couple of guys? Is it a parody of something else? Is the link a flash video? It'd be nice to not have to point at it and read the URL to find out."
You assume I (or other posters who post to the Blue) know anything about the creators. In the case of this FPP, I went to VG Cats (hence the via) and found three linked YouTube videos. I clicked on them and found three videos I really enjoyed.
Now, your take on Metafilter is obviously very different to mine. Yours is... well, yours seems to be that the Metafilter front page should be a place filled with a wealth of information about every topic posted there. And that's fine. It really is. I always say Metafilter is what we make it. And to a degree, I agree with you. I like FPPs on subjects or things I've never heard of and tell me all there is to know about them. But sometimes Metafilter is also a place where someone finds something cool, thinks that the rest of Metafilter may also think its cool, and posts it.
Yep, sometimes Metafilter is about posting cool things others may not come across to the front page. Shocking, I know, but it happens. And that's what happened this time.
And lo! Some people thought it was cool. And others didn't. No big surprise there.
Perhaps I could have researched the creators and added the info to the post. But even now that you've given us a link to their website, I don't know what it would have added and I don't think it would have changed the ratio of haters vs. likers. The post was, after all, about the videos, not the creators.
To be honest, the biggest shock for me about reaction to my FPP was that talk centred on the first two links, and not at all about the last one, which as far as I know was not by the creators of the first two links and was, IMO, funnier than the first two.
But such is life, I guess.
And now back to my holidays!

Wait a minute, ten minutes of a pretend nerd from 4chan talking to some random dudes over a video game was the funny link? Dude, I just want to put out there, for the sake of argument, the very real possibility that both the FPP and the links suck in about equal measure here.
