Need More Travel November 26, 2007 11:53 PM Subscribe
Travel doesn't seem to get much traffic. The post yesterday was the first in almost a month. Can we get a link to it at the top, along with the links to the other subsites?
I remember hearing something about Travel, but I wasn't aware it had gone live yet.

Isn't travel still an alpha site, hence the lack of link (it's not supposed to be 'live')?

I think anyone can post to it? And I believe travel-related askmes were being cross-posted there, but I might be wrong about that. If it goes on the top line, you'd need to stick a banner on the Ask question page saying 'Is your question about travel?' with a link to Travel, in much the same way that questions about Metafilter are redirected here.

pravit: You have to be an insider for at least ten of them. We don't really talk about them much.

Travel was announced in the podcast back in July. But it's still in testing phase, so it's not really supposed to be live yet as far as I know.

There are actually twenty-seven Mefi subsites. You have to be special to know about them all.

Is that the standard twenty-seven, or do you have the deluxe model with the extra salad tongs?

Well, it's only twenty seven if you don't count the cabal subsites though, right?

The happiest day of my life was when I got access to thereisnocabal.metafilter.com. Even happier than when I got a filepile account.

Funny, I was going to start a thread much like this one this morning. I had thought that Matt and pb had ported all the old travel questions from AskMe over to the travel site (and done something magical so that ongoing ones would eventually appear there too), but discovered yesterday that's not so. Matt, is there a plan for betafying (gammafying, whatever) travel.metafilter? Folding it into the rest of the site proper? Sure would be nice.
(Nicer even than getting Twitter to work with MeFi, though it be sacrilege to say so.)

Travel will be linked like every other subsite is [* glares *] once it's done which is mathowie/pb's call. Soon, I'm hoping.

I'm digging the look of Travel and will definitely contribute a travel report once it's live. Looking forward to it!

Yeah, we have a couple technical and a couple social issues that were stalling it over the summer, then a bunch of big projects got in the way (move to new servers, redo user system, etc).
Basically we have to finish importing every travel question from June 2007 to now, then decide how to both remove the travel category from Ask MeFi entirely (with automatic redirects to travel) and how to work Travel into the whole site (which may include showing travel questions on the front page of Ask MeFi, but if you click through the comments link, you'll end up at Travel).

I think to start, Travel will need the visibility that AskMe could bring from cross-posting to both sites. And as Matt said, the "more inside" and comments could be actually located at the Travel subsite. Ideally initially you could post a travel question originating from either Travel or AskMe and it would show up in both places but any reports or non-question Travel posts would only be available via the Travel page. Then maybe if Travel started to thrive on it's own, cross-posting questions could be eliminated (or maybe selected as an option in our profiles - that's real easy, right?).

IF I NEVER HEAR ANYTHING ABOUT FILEPILE AGAIN I WILL BE HAPPY. FILEPILE CAN SUCK IT, AND SO CAN ANYONE OR ANYTHING WHO LIKES TO BRAG, HOWEVER OBLIQUELY, ABOUT WHAT AN "INSIDER" THEY REALLY ARE.

That's because it's filepile.org. I've been here for over five years (in various incarnations) and I still don't know what the fuck it is, and apparently people want to keep it that way. One of life's little mysteries.

Since 67% of this thread is slaphappy dick-waving [not dickist], I'll say this again, secure in the knowledge that it won't ever be acknowledged or addressed:
All the old travel questions from AskMe have not been ported over to the travel site.
I'm not just talking about threads that were posted since the "big port-over", but even super-old stuff.
Example: http://ask.metafilter.com/tags/japan+travel shows 29 threads, including 5 from 2004 and 5 more from 2005. Meanwhile, http://travel.metafilter.com/go/japan shows 26 threads total, of which none are from 2004 and 6 are from 2005. Even more to the point, comparing the 2005 posts reveals that just two of them appear both places -- the other 7 appear on one subsite only.
So I'm delighted to hear (read) Matt say that it's still on the radar, but the bad news is that even more work is going to be needed than he thinks.
blah blah cabal.

We mostly don't care about ancient comments though if they're really terrible and asinine and it makes you feel better to flag them, flag away.
