what's up with the pinstripes? November 18, 2007 9:56 AM Subscribe
Metafilter looks a little funny today. Blue, grey, green, everything is showing up like this under firefox. Safari shows things like this.
Have you tried widening that FF window? It looks cramped in close enough that the search box is forcing the secondary menu nav to plop down beneath. Or is that what you're asking?

Just widen your browser another 50px. Your firefox screenshot is smaller than 800x600, but the safari one is almost 900px wide, which explains why it looks fine in one, but not the other. I suppose I should put a firefox-aware "min-width:800px" in there.

Yeah. Horizontal scrolling is a great way to get me to not visit a website. Whether this is a good thing is left as an exercise to the reader.
Not that this is an issue with metafilter since my browser window is more than 800 pixels wide.

If your window is consistently under 800 pixels, horizontal scrolling is an unavoidable way of life. But any site that goes scrolly under 1000 pixels is user-unfriendly. I'm going to test out a min-max width setup that's supposed to work cross-browser on my blog, because stretching a single column over 1250px on a wide screen is not good either. If it forms a black hole in the middle of the Internet, I apologize in advance. If not, I'll recommend it to mathowie.

To answer the question you asked in the title, I'm pretty sure the pinstripes have always been there.
