How does it feel? November 13, 2007 7:33 AM Subscribe
Just wanted to call attention to an AskMe that really takes you on a roller-coaster ride -- opening with sadness, stopping off at beauty, providing lots of warm fuzzies throughout, stopping off for a surprising dollop of disgust on the way to inexplicable hilarity (ymmv), and ending up being a great reference point for anybody in a relationship.
I don't think it breaks the guidelines. It's a genuine question that can be answered, and it's getting good answers. Thanks for bringing the thread to my attention.

My favorite part was when people helpfully misread the tags and started talking about their mothers.

My favorite part is how many people realize they are loved in emergency rooms.

My favorite part is how being covered in vomit and/or necessitating immediate intervention into a bodily orifice appears to be a prerequisite to feeling loved.

Well, for some people, googly, that ain't love. That's just what floats their boat.

I think that we're not giving due consideration to the Air Supply thesis regarding love: that it can be made from nothing at all.

I thought McCartney's work had disproven that thesis earlier:
Life -> End, Love taken = Love made

Curiouos that it segued from the question what it FEELS like to be loved to the answers about how you know you are loved. What it feels like is a much more interesting question. And not really to do with how nice the other is to you.

My favorite part was when the wife thought the husband woke up at 3AM to go buy her Diet Pepsi. Sounds to me like his old buddies were down at the bar 'til closing time.

Interesting distinction, jennydiski, though I imagine it would be a bit hard to describe what it feels like to be loved beyond the "warm tingles in my toes" kind of way. To be fair, the OP did specify as a template "When X, I knew I was loved".
I wish I could MeMail the OP and thank them for a heartwarming thread, though, and to cheer them on for their future personal relationships.

You see, that whole toes tingling thing is too easy. Why not total panic and holy terror? Really to know you are loved might be a terrifying experience.
As in: I knew I was truly loved when I had to spend the next week blowing into a paper bag.

Funny thing about love...
It's savage and it's cruel
And it shines like destruction
Comes in like the flood
And it seems like religion
It's noble and it's brutal
It distorts and deranges
And it wrenches you up
And you're left like a zombie
It's guilt edged
Glamorous and sleek by design
You know it's jealous by nature
False and unkind
It's hard and restrained
And it's totally cruel
It touches and it teases
As you stumble in the debris
or so I've heard.

jennydiski and liquorice, I agree with your comments wholeheartedly. It occurred to me as I read the comments in the original thread that people do lots of nice things for reasons other than love (guilt, obligation, in anticipation of something in return, etc). Interesting how many thought that indicated love. Or maybe in their instances, it was done out of love and they knew it.
