Just a "mefi awesome today" post November 9, 2007 11:56 AM Subscribe
Today has been the best day in terms of FPPs in living memory. The sort of day that will keep me coming back for years to come. Can Fridays always be dedicated to the very best of the web? And statistically - what day has provided the most favourites?
I suggest we make Wednesdays "Hip-Hop Humpday".

Let's save the "help me quick, my SO is choking" posts up for Sundays. They will make a good followup to the "should I eat this" posts, to which Saturdays are currently dedicated, and then Monday's usual fusillade of "What can I make if all I have in the kitchen are random pieces of partially digested throat-obstruction-size chunks of food and paprika" posts will come at the perfect time.

Today has been the best day in terms of FPPs in living memory.
Man, when you sober up you're going to be so embarrassed.
On the front page right now, I count, among other things:
An animated short.
A flash game.
A link to some context-free photos of a road being washed out.
A link to a photographers' rights pamphlet that I've seen about a million times before over the last year or so.
A single-link youtube post of an advertisement.
A couple of newsfilter posts.
A LOLBUSHSUXFILTER post.
Some of these I found interesting, some not so much. Some of those I failed to mention I found interesting, some not so much.
But to call this the the best day of posts in living memory seems a little, well, drunk. Or at least excessive.

Flash fridays is a great idea, and the missile game is just the sort of thing that is perfect for casual game-play.
I watched the frat house documentary last night (though it was posted today) and laughed a lot.
The "celestial SimCity control panel" was a great description of images which I did find interesting despite the lack of commentary demystifying it.
The spam flickr images would good great on a t-shirt.
I hadn't seen the photographers right pamphlet before, and it made me realise what a good aggregator of useful (and survival) tools MeFi is.
The youtube link was a good diversion, and the Laura Gibson song on it made this a good friday.
james_cpi post about navigable rivers is the sort of metafilter post I come back to eventually, bookmarking for future reading.
And I wasn't aware about Super Mario Galaxy, and rely on MeFi for lots of this sort of news.
And college humour is a site I never look at, but rely on MeFi to direct me to.
The captchas thing, like the michael jackson white glove project from a while back is another interesting web-community related site that I'm glad I had my attention drawn towards.
New Africa was another read that led me onto even more interesting stuff.
I then I get to 21:40 and no work has been done. That is why it was a good day. Excessive maybe, but today had a lot of really good stuff.

This week, I broke parity on the favorites to contributions, have three comments in the Most Favorited of the Past 7 Days, had a well received FPP (that even caused the original author to plunk down her 5$), and even saw cortex turn some cheesy parody lyrics into an awesome song. That plus the massive amounts of alcohol I've consumed tonight lead me to believe that I, at least, had a pretty good MeFi week.
I type this smalled in order to keep my swelling ego of INTERNET CELEBRITY in check. My wife says I've become insufferable in the past 7 hours, but nuts to her, right? She's just holding me back! I'll show her that random vaguely funny comments on a website can make a fortune! So what if she's kicked me out and I'm posting from a Motel 6? Yeah! I'll show you all!

“Me, I'm looking for penultimate of the web.”
Steven Erikson, the author of a series of highly-regarded fantasy books, The Malazan Book of the Fallen, is oft-praised for his erudition and intelligence because, for instance, he has a graduate degree in anthropology. However, he misused the word penultimate as the very best repeatedly through a large portion of one of his books. It actually pissed me off because I had been trusting his intelligence and erudition, and that misuse strongly called them into question. The books are still extraordinarily good, though. But he's not quite as competent in a number of subject areas as he thinks he is.
You can tell he's not aware of this. As you might expect, his anthropological expertise means that anthro-related aspects, both physical and cultural, of his invented cultures are far, far more sophisticated and realistic than what you normally get in fantasy. On the other hand, his economics is truly lousy, but he clearly thinks otherwise. The contrast is jarring.

Yep. I kind of figured that jessamyn's comment was a sort of double-entendre, where the primary joke was the idea of MeFi being the “second-best of the web”, and the secondary joke being the awareness that lots of people mistakenly think that penultimate is synonymous with “the very best”.

Ha! I was just complaining about the frequent misuse of the word "penultimate" the other day. In fact, I can remember the very moment when I learned what it actually meant.
Friend 1: So I wrote this paper for my media class about how Beavis and Butthead is the penultimate MTV cartoon.
Friend 2: Uh, don't you mean ultimate? Penultimate means not quite ultimate.
Friend 1: Shit.
Really, what kind of thesis is that anyway? I've since downgraded him from Friend 1 to Friend 37.
