This annoying little problem seems to exist again.

Same characteristics as far as I can see. I think it began yesterday but not sure. Are there anybody else but me seeing this?

What browser/OS are you running?

Old school; Iexplorer ver 6.0.2800.1106 on win98!

Doesn't appear to be a problem with Opera.

This has been bothering me too using Firefox on Linux (Ubuntu/7.10, Firefox/2.0.0.8). So much so that I finally got round to installing the noscript extension, which has sorted things out.

noscript would just filter out flash, no?

I was having this problem with MeTa until I blocked that IT Crowd ad (sorry, Matt).

Well it stops fmpub and google-analytics from loading so if there's a problem there then it'll solve it.

I thought it might be the google-analytics, and I actually attributed the problem to spotty Google availability in China that I put down to Great Fire Wall shenanigans, rather than something MeFi - though it seems to spin its wheels on the fmpub too.

I mean, it does block flash but not from allowed domains. That's why you need flashblock as well.

Someone mentioned fmpub issues to me this morning, as well. Related? Are they having a hang-y day?

Adblock. You can block ANYTHING with it. At the rate I'm going, eventually I'll be blocking HTML soon, and the web will be instantaneous.

I've been having no slowness issues since I blocked fmpub, but man it was hanging things left and right before then.

Not sure about fmpub, but I think google has been having issues today.

I blocked both fmpub and google analytics and the problem persists.

huh, might be a DNS issue then?

Does ask.metafilter.com hangup as well, or just www.metafilter.com?

Interesting.

I just sent the mods a hope me! I'm hanging! note. My issues: blue, green and grey all hang (mostly at loading fmpub). I just downloaded the latest Camino to try it again, so I thought that might be it, since there wasn't a hanging issue in FF (2.0)...until a few minutes ago. But the FF hang is much shorter, and in the blue only. This is on a G4 pb 10.4.

One more thing: In Camino, there is no hang when I access individual post/questions from Google Reader - it just zips along as usual.

shit, I just did some testing because it was happening to me as well, and commenting out all the calls to the fmpub adservers got rid of the problem completely.

I'll talk to their network ops people in the morning to see if we can solve the problem.

Thanks matt.

Everything seems to be happy again. Thanks.

rtha, I still got it, nothings changed. Especially very long threads are completely hopeless. Everything freezes and I can't scroll or click anything for several seconds. But since Opera seems to work fine I'll use that instead.

Catfry, that seems like a browser memory issue on your end.

I talked to the network people and they did indeed have some slow-downs last night around the time I had problems but they re-routed traffic and said the problem should be gone now.

Yeah, it's very possible it's a local problem for me. I just remembered the topic the first time it came up and wanted to see if anyone else had it now.
