Metafilter Runs: November Edition November 4, 2007 3:16 PM Subscribe
pj_rivera normally does this but is evidently out of pocket right now, and nobody's picked this up, so I take it upon myself to post the monthly reminder and get more people joining up: It's time for the November Metafilter Runs Distance Challenge, and we need more people to sign up, so come join.
See also the Metafilter Burns Calorie Burning Challenge. I may be blind, but I don't see a walking challenge up for this month yet.
Also, Matt: I see you've got WeEndure on the list of "also on" sites for our profiles, but not Runner+. Could you add that to the list, since we're doing our running/walking challenges through there now?

Does runner+ have profile pages, like runnerplus.com/user/foobar? The "also on" thing is mainly a way to share your userpage on other services.

Whoops, sorry mct! pj asked me to start up the challenge last week since he's away from home, but I forgot the associated Meta post.
Is it worth doing a separate Walking Challenge if the pace limit functionality still isn't working properly? I run and walk, so without the pace limit all of my miles count towards any challenge that I'm in. I'll leave it up to some of the more dedicated walkers if they want to start one.

I would kill for a cycling version of this, or even a sort of conversion across disciplines. Great idea, too bad I don't run.

I tried to sign up but it says ""Metafilter November distance running challenge" Limitation Met. We're sorry, but this challenge is limited to the group, MetaFilter. You do not meet this requirement. You may wish to join this group first: MetaFilter."
What gives?

Ok, duh, I figured that out, sorry. Yay! Wish this stomach virus hadn't knocked out my Saturday and Sunday run this week.

web-goddess: I don't really have a problem with combining the two. I think there was some concern in the past with giving notice of both the best runner and the best walker for the month, so the categories were separated to keep the distinction clear, but I personally don't have a dog in the fight.

I'm going to sign up for this tonight after work. Currently running around 30 miles a month so in it for the lolz more than anything else.

I don't think anybody really cares who wins (I got my ass spanked the last two months, and had a ball doing it). It's more for the fun of it, and the motivation -- it's harder for me to duck out of a run when I know I've got to put numbers up for the challenge.

Watch out! I just discovered my Nike+ hasn't been calibrated and I've been running about 15% further than I've logged.
Wait-did you say 19 miles already? Jesus...

Cool, I found a website that tells me how much calories I burn playing Ultimate (among other things) so I might, if I remember, take part in the calorie burning challenge thing.

OK, I'm probably being dense, but do I need a iPod thing to enter data for the calorie burning challenge? It says "No device necessary, though an iPod or a HRM are recommended" but I can't figure out how to submit data in a way that isn't "use this thing to sync with your iPod Nano".

Under the "control panel" section, there's a place to add run data manually under "run manager." You can manually add your calories burned under that section, but you'll probably have to throw in some distance and time info too, which of course you can just pull out of your ass if you're not actually running or walking to burn calories.

Yeah, I just discovered the manual entry for distance after completing my longest run *ever*, then throwing my ipod in my pocket where my run accidentally got deleted. Seriously, why in the *hell*, would Apple include an option to delete your run?

@jacalata & Chuckles: Thanks! I only click through to the Grey for flameouts, so I've never noticed that - this will be fun!

I've deleted a workout before! Case in point: I walk to work. I head out and start the workout... and before I get to the corner, the heavens open and it starts raining. I go to catch the bus instead. Do I really want to upload 500m worth of run and have you all see it? Nope. Delete.

When I first got my kit, I spent two miles of a 4-mile workout calibrating the damn thing. Wasn't until afterward that I realized that THE GOD DAMN CALIBRATION DOESN'T COUNT TOWARD MILEAGE.
So very angry. It burned, the anger.
