Paging meetup photgraphers.... October 6, 2007 4:37 PM Subscribe
Would you please post your meetup pics in the original thread instead of creating new ones? They don't show up in the meetup sidebar.
Difficulty in finding old meetup pictures was the reason why I asked for this: http://metatalk.metafilter.com/14316/ponyfilter

Or a million other solutions, including a link in the original thread pointing to the photo thread.. But, limiting meetup photo threads would be very, very, very bad.

Or better still: MeetMetaFilter (meetups.metafilter.com). I suggest a red and white tablecloth pattern for the background color.

nobody knows about the "Met Up" page
Ahem...it is the sidebar to the right on the Metatalk page. Matt added the past meetup link in response to my first request. I think it would make things easier if photos were posted in those threads.

I would never think to check the sidebar for new photos of old meetups. I like seeing the photos. Therefore, I like things the way they are.

I like new threads for photos. I wouldn't see them otherwise.

What if the meetup thread is older than 30 days and is therefore closed? This will happen with the Dec 15 meetup which is already closed.

I like a new post to share the meetup photos. If the original post is still open, a link to the pix one could be added.
Or, what Chuckles already said.

I think it's redundant to post new threads....but a photo/meetup tag is a good idea. Before the sidebar was created, people both posted in the original thread or added new ones.
What if the meetup thread is older than 30 days and is therefore closed? Then I think the pony request would be to keep the original post open longer.

I like new posts, because I like to be able to see pictures of meetups that weren't on my radar, but I also think there should be some system of tying meetup photos back to the original thread about the meetup (so they'll be tied in on the calendar of past meetups).

I think the ideal solution would be to keep the meetup date in the sidebar for a while, even after the meetup has actually happened, with some indicator of how recently new comments had been added to the thread.
Or, interested users could just subscribe to the RSS feed for the meetup thread.

brujita - From a logistical point of view, once you have attended a meetup, the link to the meetup then disappears the day afterwards from the sidebar.
From my point of view, it's harder to post to the original thread because you have to search for it. And you have to know what you're looking for too.
If threads were left on the sidebar for a day longer, that might help. But ultimately, post meetup pics are new and exciting, and I think it helps draw attention to them by having a new thread to share with everyone.

Another vote for new threads here, if anybody is keeping score.

Maybe something like this should be added to the MeTa posting page:
If you are posting a meetup photos thread, remember to put a link to the photos in the original meetup thread.

Triv, past meetup threads now go to the link in the sidebar under the list of those upcoming.

If it's not a meetup thread I actually commented in, and it scrolls off the front page of meta, I'm never going to see that it was updated.

The meetup sidebar NEVER scrolls off the front page.
Sure, but past meetups aren't actually on the sidebar; there's just a link to a page with all past-meetups, a page I'll never look at without something telling me there's something new to look at over there. Which the sidebar currently doesn't do. If the sidebar had a list of recently-commented-past-meetup-posts, that'd be another matter, but it doesn't.

brujita - I'll refer you to juv3nal's comment directly above mine which gives my reasons more succinctly than I would have managed on my own.

I don't go to most meetups because they are no where near me. But I love seeing the photos from those meetups. So I like the follow-up threads exclusively for photos and talking about how hawt the participants are.

There should be pixels.metafilter.com, where users can post pix and tag'em in sweet Ajax interface!

Click on the past meetups link, click on the particular meetup one wants , scroll down....Voila!
I apologize for the initial harshness...I did not realize that most wouldn't notice the title.

I agree that it's hard to find photo threads for old meetups. This is an argument for implementing tagging on Meta. Tags like
meetup, london, photos
would solve this and related problems.posted by Aloysius Bear at 4:55 PM on October 6, 2007
