Muster Up for Halo 3, MeFites! September 27, 2007 6:52 AM   Subscribe

Attention Halo-ites: Please update the wiki with your GamerTag. I tire of being clubbed to death by mouth-breathing 12 year olds.

Also, this may be a good place to ponder some sort of virtual Halo meetup. Yanno, for the kids.

I fiddled with the wiki page format a bit, but my wiki skillz be mad weak.

I got rid of XBox Live after I was tired of people quitting on my Madden games in the third quarter when it was an obvious loss. Good sportsmanship, huh? In any case, I'm getting my tag back soon. As much as I hate watching people jump around and kill me with one shot in Halo 3, it is pretty addictive.

Also: How did people memorize all the levels so fast? Dare I ask? The few games I played on a friends account, within seconds the best players had the one super-weapon in the level and were sniping from above. Durp.

But isn't the quintessential Halo experience to be called a noob by a trash-talkin' girly-voiced 12 year-old? (youtube)

For any mefites that want to play, Loops McGee is the tag. Let's go kick some choir-boy ass!

I am embarrassed to say my copy arrived yesterday and has yet to hit my 360. I am getting old. Gimme a couple days to get up to speed. And find my headset-- no headset was a good solution to a lot of X-Box Live issues.

Well, Halo was accidentally pre-released in a few places, and as a result hit some file sharing sites, so people with modded 360's could've had the game for several extra days already.

There was a pre-release multiplayer Beta too, which probably had something to do with it.

Additionally, some of the maps are redone versions of Halo2 maps. There's one, for instance, that looks like lockout with vines all over it.

Funny story, I was in Orlando this past weekend working at the Major League Gaming professional competitive gaming tournament. Halo2 is by far the biggest game at the event. Not only were there people there with copies of the retail game (bought from various mom and pop stores trying to score extra bucks by selling higher priced copies to desperate kids early) but people with the aforementioned leaked copies, and EVERYONE was playing lans in their hotel rooms all weekend long of Halo3. So yeah, these kids are definitely raising the bar early.

Ok, I will be adding all of you folks!

I have a few friends added from a gaming focused forum as well, these groups are really the best way to play.

Sorry for crashing your game yesterday robocop, I got a little excited when I popped the disc in, I just wanted to shoot something immediately... although that didn't work out too well for me!

No worries, prostyle. With you there, there were 50% mefites (you, me, and "plate of beans" solistrato).

Alas, I miss Halo but I can't in good conscience drop all that cash for one game, and Halo is really the only game besides Starcraft, CIV or my emulated Final Fantasy Tactics that I want to play anymore.

I suck at FPSs, so if you'd get satisfaction out of repeatedly killing someone who's flailing around unable to aim, then watch out for me.

SirButtington is mine.. I have been known to sign on and play games.

How wonderful that we can safely assume there are no mouth-breathers on MetaFilter.

I'll bust my copy out this weekend, I suppose, but I too tire of the 12-year-olds, not because of their taunting but because they have time to learn all the ways to kill me, while I only have time to load a level, go "oo, pretty" and promptly get throttled by some goddamn hammer.

There need to be more slow-paced, stalking/hunting FPS games for us geriatric Gen X people.

Halo: Segway Edition. Unreal Tournament Rascal. Walking Marathon. Duke Nukem 3D. (what?)

Well we have about 10 Halo 3 players judging by the wiki, so how about a Halo 3 'meetup' on Saturday evening? I'm on UK time but I don't mind staying up late to accommodate the Americans if they won't be on 'til later.

might not be a bad idea. about to go pickup my copy, actually.
posted by shmegegge at 12:59 PM on September 28, 2007

I'll pick up a copy since I finished BioShock last night. I've never played anything on Live, though, because I suck so badly that it's just humiliating. I played a little Halo 1 when it first came out -- do I need to know anything special to play Halo 3?
posted by The Bellman at 3:20 PM on September 28, 2007

Oh and by the way, you'll be shocked to hear that my tag is:The Bellman.

The main differences to Halo 1 are probably:
- A lot more weapons (all the Halo 1 guns are in there, tweaked a little but there are a lot more Covenant guns)
- More vehicles
- You can dual-wield some guns now
- In H3 they added 'equipment', which is stuff like portable shields, landmines, etc, that you can carry around and deploy (you can only carry one thing with you at a time).

The basic gameplay is pretty much unchanged, although they have a lot more multiplayer game types now.

I'll try and make it Saturday night as well.

I'm usually on around 4 or so EST. We've got enough people on at that time that I'll start making a Custom Game for folks to join.

those are some outstanding screen caps, rib. is there some kind of spectator mode in h3, now? or were you in forge or what?
posted by shmegegge at 11:05 AM on October 1, 2007

There's a Theater Mode that allows you to replay entire past matches. You can watch from your perspective, other people's perspectives, or even a floating mobile camera's perspective and take pictures/record video at your leisure!

It's amazing and I chalk it up to the success of Red vs Blue and the ensuing desire of imitators.
posted by robocop is bleeding at 11:37 AM on October 1, 2007

that's really funny, because I should have remembered that. At work we'll actually be using that mode from now on to capture halo 3 matches for editing with. either way, nice screenshots, sir, sorry I didn't play in the match. I got a message about it and everything, and I completely missed it because I was playing the (meh) campaign.

...I completely missed it because I was playing the (meh) campaign.

Yeah, I got through two acts of the campaign and I haven't gotten out of matchmaking since then. I'd love to see more of us get together for a rumble, that was really fun even with just four players. I see there are some new gamertags to add to my list...

I need to get a better grasp on the hosting/party system functionality, I'm kind of lost in that regard. Thankfully, Robocop is a great host, although I always crash his game whenever I see an arrow next to it - like the newb I am! One day he is going to ban me for my insolence, I can feel it.

Nice screens, I can't get enough of theater... you know it's bad when you spend 10 minutes in Slayer, then 30 minutes taking pictures!
posted by prostyle at 12:45 PM on October 1, 2007

Eh, the only thing I'd ban you for is the fact that you survived that crotch-bomb and then killed the guy that put it there. True grit like that has no place in my librul 'merica!
