A small pony request:
When I am interested in ongoing threads or participating in a discussion, I will frequently check back to see if there are new comments after the one I just posted. However, there is a time limit or something on how often the "new comment" message updates. Would it be possible / productive / desirable to add "last comment by [username]" after the "number of comments" text?
Is there a reason you don't just use the recent activity feature to do this? It's not perfect if you're just following a thread, but if you're posting in it, it works great.

Have you used the "Recent Activity" link? It's a good way of keeping track of threads you've personally participated in. The new comments counter only updates every 20 minutes or so, IIRC.

The reason I don't use the "recent activity" feature if because I never noticed it's use. Specifically that it pops up the comments like that for you.
Color me embarrassed. That totally solves my problem.

thanks guys. as a tiny little off-topic addendum: Matt needs to write more articles over at Fortuitous. They are fabulous.
I can't believe I never noticed the recent activity function.

This is true though, and I wish it could somehow update to when you last looked at a thread. I read somewhere else on MeTa that the "new comment" indicator works on Big MagicTM and we're lucky that it even allows us mere mortals to know about any new comments, but a real-ish time update would be nice.
just sayin'

I really wish that you could add a posting to the Recent Activity page without having made a comment in the thread. Sometimes I just like following the conversation while it's going on without chipping in, and I don't want to favorite it.

i_am_a_Jedi: That is what keep asking for. Well, I proposed that it should be done via favoriting, but I really don't care.
