I can has login pony? July 24, 2007 3:40 PM Subscribe
Smart logins: It's been mentioned before and didn't quite happen. Matt, can you please just sit down and do this instead of redirecting to the front page? If I'm on a page I want to [comment on/flag/favorite] I [am too lazy to/don't want to/will explode if you make me] use the back button to go back to the original page.
(if by "ON PREVIEW" you mean "by my careful statistical projections which despite taking me several minutes to compute using the latest cellular automata-assisted computational methods, will nonetheless turn out to be wrong")

Don't people just stay logged in all the time?

I, for one, do stay logged in all the time, but happen to be on my fiancee's laptop. Otherwise I surely woud have noticed it sooner, and posted about it.

This seems to be overstepping a line between request and demand. Sounds like a good feature though.
But forget all that-- I don't log out either, so I don't care. All I really care about is the sandwich that Matt was supposed to make for me ten minutes ago, which I have yet to see. I bet he forgot the mayo again, too.

The good news is, this is actually trivial: on any particular content thread, make sure the current non-domain part of that page's URL is printed as a query string variable, then on the login page, redirect to that variable if the login is successful.
That does, of course, assume he has the time and wants to do this.
And for the love of all that is holy, vet the value of the query string value so that nobody can do XSSing.

Tehanu, yea, he forgot the damn mayo on mine too. Matt, why do we keep having to remind you? This sucks.

I know you guys already know this, but kylegs talking about a re-direct to the original page from which he did some action, not auto log in or something as his links suggest. And stuff or whatever.

Yeah Matt, sit your ass down and get it done. Who the hell do you think you are.
See, you'll never get anywhere using mealy-mouth expressions like this, you need to up the ante. If you want to see results, you need to use the proper phrasing such as; 'sit your fat ass down', and 'who the fuck do you think you are?'
Ideally you should through a couple of 'you lazy shit' and 'WTF, I paid for this site',
That will guarantee some kind of action.

In the previous MeTa threads where this came up, mathowie himself says that, "There are a handful of little tweaks I need to do that require just sitting down and doing them." kyleg isn't being demanding, he's just using mathowie's own words.
And for those of you who say you never log out, maybe it's time to pony up another $5 and get yourselves some sockpuppets.

carsonb, I'm glad you cleared that up, I thought I smelled a mob brewing.
Matt, I'm using a straight Fire Fox rig and when I comment, flag, favorite, I have to hit back space a couple time to get back to where I was. I think that's what he's talking about.

carsonb, please thank your former teachers for your skills at reading comprehension. My phrasing was totally stolen from the second link.
Matt (and any others that may be confused), what's happening is that if I'm in a thread, I want to be taken directly back to it after I login. Say there's an AskMe I want to favorite or comment in, so I click the login link at the top or bottom of the page. After it logs me in, the page redirects to the front page of the blue. In my perfect world (the only one that matters), I would be sent back to the page where I clicked on the login link.
Supposedly what I'm asking for is already in effect; could there be a cookie issue here? I've tried with Firefox (toggled Adblock on and off) and IE, and keep getting the same result.

I was wondering about that as well, I'm also using an unmodified Firefox, and I can comment, flag, and favorite without having to go back at all.

Matt, it's not the ajax. It's when I'm using a different computer that I'm not logged into. If I have to login to do something, I want to be able to do it with the minimal amount of clicking. I don't want to have to use the back button or go searching again for the thread I wanted to comment in or favorite.

Wait, there are two questions here
1. kyleg's login redirect thing.
2. snsranch's lack of ajaxability on flagging and whatnot which is mysterious to me. snsranch, what happens when you click the little flag thing on a MeFi post/comment, do you get a little dropdown menu appearing?

And just to be clear, your missing feature is one that most of us already enjoy. What about your fiancee's laptop would keep you from enjoying it too?

If you click this link, you should see a URL for this thread, if it is blank, something on your setup is blocking referrers. Maybe it's a norton/mcaffee internet security app running?

Reading this thread left me imaging Mathowie in his server room room waving his arms directing the traffic (yellow vest and paddles, like the airplane landing guys). There's a page request from carsonb and Matt just waves it on to where it's headed. Oh but there's one from kyleg and Matt's arms fly up 'halt!' and those page requests get redirected back to the start.
Yeah, not helpful I know. But it kept me amused for a while.

Yup, it's blank. Must be this Norton thing that I never noticed before now. Stupid unfamiliar computers.
Sorry for inadvertently inferring you might be a lazy admin, Matt. Things work normally on flickr, so I assumed they'd perform like I expected them to here as well, though obviously the code is different and gets parsed in a different way.
Before this thread gets closed, I want everyone to know how much of a pain it is to post about login issues when the L key only works a third of the time with a good hard slam of the finger. Guess it's time to get her a new computer that works as well as I think it should.
