The Blue is Broken? July 11, 2007 1:05 PM   Subscribe

Is it just me, or has the Blue been replaced by a default apache loading page?
posted by falconred to Uptime at 1:05 PM (34 comments total)

For a while now, the main site has not loaded properly, instead displaying a default "Apache is working on your cPanel® and WHM™ Server!" page.

I expected the outcry of thousands (ok dozens) of bored MeFites, but the status blog, wiki, and Meta have been silent.

So, uh, what's going on? Did I miss something?

It's just you.

Definitely just you.

Or, anyway, definitely not me.

Did you try shaking your monitor?

Humph. Well, I tried clearing my cache and using IE instead (yuck!) instead, but I still see this.

She's cheating on you.

Probably just a temporary thing. This site is moving pretty slow right now though.

What address do you get when you ping metafilter? (type cmd /k ping metafilter.com into the Run box, which is in the Start menu)

actually, what happens if you put 74.53.68.130 into your browser?

Site's been pretty chunky for me today, but I sure haven't seen that.

It looks more like the YouTube front page to me.

I haven't gotten any Apache screens, but the site has been loading horribly slow all day and I've gotten a lot of "Site not responding" errors. I figure it's just a server hiccup or something.

74.53.0.4 (and I get the apache page if I plug this directly into my browser)

actually, what happens if you put 74.53.68.130 into your browser?

I get the apache page.

Looks like a DNS server is giving you the wrong IP address for metafilter.com. When you ping metafilter.com you should get back 74.53.68.130.

You could try nslookup metafilter.com from a command line and you might find out which DNS server has the wrong address. If you're familiar with your Hosts file, you might take a look and see if there are any entries for metafilter.com.

weird. I get the metafilter home page if I go to 74.53.68.130 (which is the IP I get when I ping MeFi), but I get the same Apache page at 74.53.0.4.

If only I knew what that meant.

cPanel?

4.0.53.74.in-addr.arpa name = 4.0.354a.static.theplanet.com

Strange, I've tracked a boatload of oddball ip connections from my own machine to this 'the planet' hosting place. They were all coming from my 'system idle' process (I know, it's not really a process but in vista the windows session manager seems to live within it ) until I blocked it, What gives?

Oh, and did I mention port 80 on the many IP's was always some screwed up apache error page?
posted by IronLizard at 3:08 PM on July 11, 2007

IronLizard saved the day. I am also in Vista, so I added this to my hosts file:

127.0.0.1 *.theplanet.com

Now I can see the blue again. That was interesting...

Sounds like malware.

Indeed. And here I thought all this Vista Windows Defender junk was keeping me safe. Hah!

Just a thought, have you added any new firefox extensions lately? Install anything else?
posted by IronLizard at 3:36 PM on July 11, 2007

Also, if it's malware it hides in smss.exe or hijacks it, one of the two.

mefi is hosted at the planet so you might be getting stuck at the firewall or something. What's odd though is that it appears to be only you.

cortex, do you surf?
posted by Ambrosia Voyeur at 5:50 PM on July 11, 2007

I actually have problems with the site timing out and refusing to load at work sometimes not that I read mefi at the work, so I assume it's somehow related to specific connection weirdness. Hitting refresh brings it back eventually.

I get that at home too.

You know who else had problems with that IP address, don't you?

Default Apache? Wasn't he briefly with the Avengers back in the 1970s? Wore a feather headress and a yellow costume emblazoned with a thunderbird symbol? Could fire lightning bolts from his tomahawk? I'm pretty sure he was killed by Galactus in issue 480.

You're not half wrong, AZ, but the lightning bolt thing must be an exaggeration. All reputable sources maintain he was much, much more mundane.

Not quite - after the Super Friends broke up he had a rough few years on Bleeker Street: using his powers for sex, drinking too much, eventually spiralling into the nosedive of drugs and self-loathing so many of these ex-supergroup types go through when the going gets rough.

Lucky for him Peter Schilling had been a huge fan of his early work, and eventually tracked him down and got him on his feet again. With his new career, he prepended the adjective to his monicker on account of his Earthquake Powers and ability to scat like a cross between Cab Calloway and Biz.

Sadly, he was killed by Galacticus in issue 481 in a drunken dispute about the girl on the Land-O-Lakes butter packaging.

I assume The Planet is doing your DNS as well? It looks like they had a hiccup that routed MeFi's IP to one of their shared machines. cPanel is a common interface for hosted domains on shared machines.

What's odd though is that it appears to be only you.

Again, if it's DNS, it could just be a TTL problem. If they sent out a "bad" update followed by a "good" one, and falconred's ISP caught the bad DNS with a long TTL, it would take longer to shake out for him. Remote, but possible.

I'm such a nerd

I liked the evil malware conspiracy better. DNS caching intervals are just so boring after that.
