Don't feel bad. About 500 of those are me favoriting myself. There was a time when I was trying to get my favorites and favorited by others both to 666 but it ended up being too big a pain in the ass to deal with.

Granted; then again, if you find the comments/FPPs of a person interesting, and they find your comments/FPPs interesting, it does suggest that you might have something in common -- and what's wrong with that? Certainly I'll be more likely to attend a local meetup if I know I have something (other than MeFi itself) in common with a few folks...

One nice (but, I get the feeling, underused) feature of the mefi profiles is tracking contact activity. If you add someone as a contact, some of their activity—posts, comments, favorites—will show up in your "usercontacts" page, accessible from the links in the contacts bit of the profile:

Here's mine, for example—and looking at that reminds me that I don't really use the contact feature as much as I could for this sort of thing.

Well, there's the argument that by giving people easy access to the data, we'll consequently make it easier for people to act on/comment about/call out/self-report that data.

I imagine that making it easier for people to access that kind of thing would increase the occurrence of tit-for-tat favoriting and me-too-isms. I figure there's too much emphasis on favoriting as it is.

I guess I don't get the concern over the social aspect of it as a nightmare, because I'm not an online touchy-feely type; I find the connections interesting, and would want to know if any agreeable folks were showing up for a local meetup, but that's pretty much it. The idea of calling people out or forming cliques based on favoriting just seem so...I dunno, ODD to me.
Perhaps I need to spend more time (which is to say "any time at all") on MySpace, et al to find out why this scares/disgusts so many people...

This seems like it would put a heavier load on the server. Plus the circle jerk aspect, compounded with Mefi's LOVE of circle jerks makes it sound like a bad idea.
You personally might not do this, but that awful stain called humanity will abuse this feature just like they abused Paris Hilton.

Don't favorite hundreds of posts. If you're using favorites as bookmarks and it's too much to slog through, then it's not an effective bookmarking system. And if you're using them as favorites, then you shouldn't have so damn many or it makes the term "favorite" nearly useless. You never ask someone what their favorite 500 colors are, or their favorite 500 foods.
I mean, you're totally free to favorite as many things as you want, but don't complain when it doesn't work.

I had to kill a little time while waiting for a server security issue to be settled, so I wrote a little shell script to do this for myself. Interesting results*.
I won't share the script, so don't panic. I might** turn it into something for projects, though, to gather favorite-based connections between people and make a big (anonymous!) chart or something.

Fair enough, but I actually use it to generate reading material. After enough time passes, I can go back to my older favorites when I'm bored and pull up interesting threads and comments. Kind of like keeping old books around even after you've read them, because they're your...um...favorites.

I don't favorite a lot, but when I do, it's rarely for ME. It's for the writer. It's my way of saying "I liked that!" to the writer, without adding noise to the thread. I don't care if *I* see it again, but I want them to see it.
