Avoiding pop-ups November 27, 2001 6:21 PM Subscribe
Do you hate pop-up windows? Yeah, me too. Here's how to avoid them. More inside...
Go to CNET and drag "disable respawns" into your favorites bar. It's saved me lots of pain and hassle.

am I missing something? What does killing pop-ups have to do with the christmas song thread?

Or you can install WebWasher, which kills popup windows dead.

How to disable pop-up windows:
1) Download Opera 6.0
2) Install, run and set as default browser
3) Press f12
4) Select "refuse pop-up windows"
voila!

y'know, I wish someone would write something so that you could have popups if you wanted them, but wouldn't get auto-popups.
yes, it is possible to want popups. I happen to use that javascript snippet on my home page to open up a little "link window" to open my favorite sites, and when I tried that (otherwise neato!) Opera trick, I couldn't open my link window.
I know, I know, I could just open it as a new window, but I like having a little window with no toolbar, etc.
and there are other non-evil uses of window.open, I swear. damn those stupid advertising people!

I believe Mozilla lets you specify which sites you'll accept popups from, but there's not really an interface for it yet. Still, at least there's some hope for the future.

AdSubtract Pro gives you the ability to control popups (and a lot of other things) on a per-site basis.

i've gotten pretty used to quickly hitting f12 on opera to enable popups if i ever feel the need to comment at a site that uses a new comment window... it's a pretty smooth operation after a bit. to hell with popups. i read somewhere in the forums that the final release will make it so that if you clicked the link for a popup, it will even with popups disabled

Linux browsers that offer popup disabling are Konqueror and Galeon that I've personally used. I assume Opera/Linux does too, and Mozilla I believe.

Galeon rocks in many, many other ways as well.

Popup Stopper lets you have popups when you want them. You just hold down the control key if ya wanna let one in. And yes apparently I've become PanicWare's whore, but I really like the software. No problems with it thus far.
And Mkn, this applies to the Christmas Songs thread because the original postlink that came with said thread does have popups. Or at least I assume they do. Other people say they do. I didn't see any. Why? Cuz I have PanicWare. =)

thanks for the links, all! (and lotsofno, if that's true about the final release of Opera6, then once again, Opera is my one true god.)
