Not trying to be a know-it-all (because I'm definitely a know-it-little), but I thought this was pretty well-known for those self-locking sorts of doors, especially the ones without a "lip" (do not know the technical term, as I am a know-it-little) on the outside. I've opened locked doors this way, as well as by using a penknife, and I've also opened doors by just trying random keys on my keyring, as strange as that may seem.

Even if that's the case, he's usually pretty spot on, regardless of his celebrity status. He's made quite a few responses that don't get favorited, but I gotta be honest - I love the fact that he's on here, if for no other reason that there's at least one thing I can say to break the ice if I ever get the chance to meet him.
"Hi Mr. Savage! I'm on MeFi too!" is a lot better than, say, "OMG. Mr...Savage. So....um, I'm a huge fan and I have nothing really good to say to you...canIhaveyourchildren? No?"

muddgirl, in my experience most of those doors also have deadbolts that you can lock from the inside or outside, and the self-locking device is (I imagine) just a sort of safety feature for when you walk out (or walk in) and forget to lock your door, though some people depend on that feature too much, I imagine, and instead of being actually useful, it just ends up in them being accidentally locked out from time to time (at which point they discover how useless that lock is). Warning, warning, false sense of security!!!!

Yes, but not above-the-baseline-cool (as many have said in this thread). Probably podcast-worthy, but IMNSHO, not its-own-thread-worthy. Oh and, "I'm not from here" doesn't really ring true as an excuse, unless you never read MetaTalk. Because there's a thread about asavage every other week (and usually it's about the damned tape-on-the-chalkboard shoutout). If you pay enough attention to MeFi to post to MeTa, it stands to reason you know who asavage is; even if you don't have a TV (like me ohtehsmugness). But maybe you legitimately don't know who he is. I'm saying most people will assume you do, by the fact you read MeTa.
And I will remain a staunch iconoclast and "hater" of idolaters. So even if your post was not such, my comment was equally directed at the impending cavalcade of "oh that adam *swoon*" comments I assumed would follow. And yes, I know the folk derivation of "assume"; wouldn't be the first time I'd made a donkey of myself. Damned buggy Clonomat™ machine.

People can know to post to MeTa even if they don't read it obsessively. And most of the Mythbusters callouts didn't mention "asavage" at all, so far as I can tell. And a quick review of adamvasco MeTa posting history suggests he's never commented in an asavage thread. In summary, don't be so silly and/or harsh.

I believe she was citing evidence, not quoting for rebuke. More "See?" and less "Oh yeah?".

So from my quick scan of this thread, nobody has yet combined the plate-of-beans meme with the written-in-tape-in-the-background-of-the-shot meme. Come on, these dead horses don't just beat themselves!

That is kind of creepy, how quickly it got accomplished. Ew.
:) Which reminds me of an incident last week at work. Someone locked their keys in their drawer (it has one of those push in to lock it locks, very odd). She asked if I could get into it. I've never picked a lock in my life, but I had my Leatherman with my tiny but very sturdy eyeglass flat headed screwdriver. And I've read enough about locks online to know the basics of a tumbler inside a lock. Took about 30 seconds. Who knew that the Leatherman's eyeglass screwdriver was such an amazing lockpick? Well, now I know.

So, um, while we're busting myths, is it true that the "Get a brain morans" sign was actually part of a mock protest and thus perhaps intentionally misspelt?

Wouldn't that be more like banging a dead horse?
Raving psycho! Butchered 400 chickens and screwed a beagle. I'm taking him back to Nevada where he's wanted for banging horses!

Well, the most often displayed photo shows neither "suit-clad demonstators" nor "near blizzard conditions" if that helps.

dreamsign, I wasn't really saying that he's all that and a bag of chips for this answer, but simply trying to state that his answers are usually spot on, regardless of his celebrity status. I would give the same honor to quite a few people on AskMe, but I think you'd rather me not list a bunch of people, nor would I like to compile such a list.
I wonder if he checks here, too, or just the AskMe threads. I know that's what I used to do; I didn't really start reading here all that much until my callout a few weeks back.

weapons-grade pandemonium : I used cash to unlock my door once.
Me too. Except it wasn't my door. And it wasn't cash, it was a battering ram. And it wasn't once, it was over the course of several days.
Other than that, just exactly the same as you.

Man, I used to unlock my parents' hollow-frame front door with a well-placed kick to the door's center, which gave the panel a quick springy bend juuuuuust forceful enough to pop that spring lock out of place. Never even left a scuff. How bad-ass am I?
Not bad-ass at all? Yeah, I was afraid of that.

I pray for Matt to release some grey shirts that say: "THAT'S IT! I'M TAKING YOUR ASS TO METATALK!"
(substitute ass for euphemism, nice word, or just drop "your ass" and say "you).
Bonus points if it's a caption beneath a picture of Matt reenacting the classic "Uncle Sam wants YOU" pose.

Are you sure it was a ram, quin? Maybe it was a raven. No, sorry--you don't have ravens. Perhaps it was a crow. An anal retentive crow.

Yeah, too far south for ravens. And crows are good, but lately I've been into turkey vultures. Crazy bald headed buzzards.
And yes, it wasn't a battering ram, it was a smallish goat. Her name was Esse. I never understood it, but she sure loved the breaking and entering.

“The funny part is that, if he'd used a credit card to jimmy a door on the show, they would have censored the tutorial.”
Huh? I've seen that on television a million times. That's why this seems kinda lame to me. Opening a locked door with a credit card is a cliche. It often works, except when it doesn't.
As to smallerdemon's lockpicking story, locks on your basic office file cabinet are rudimentary. I've picked a few of those with a paper clip back when I had no idea how such locks work (and you meant "pin", not "tumbler"—tumblers are in combination locks). I've even picked a motorcycle ignition lock with a paper clip also back before I knew how locks work.
But it's not that hard to pick conventional locks if you know how, have practiced a little, and have a basic lockpicking tool. You can even buy automated, battery-driven little tools that will do it faster than most novices. Of course, in many jurisdictions possessing lockpicking tools without being a locksmith is a crime.
