Lets play Mafia May 6, 2007 4:33 PM   Subscribe

Lets play Mafia. It is normally a party game but I've seen it played on the internet a couple times. I've played it in real life, but there was always something so appealing about playing an online round. I've wanted to arrange a game but never had the right internet forum for the job. I think MeFi would be a perfect group of people for the task. Anyone else interested? If the admins are cool with it, I think it'd be a blast.

You know, I played this game in college, and I never understood where the fun was, and I just tried to read the Wiki instructions, and I still don't understand where the fun is. If someone could explain it to me in, like, 2 sentences, that would be nice.

The game itself isn't the fun, but watching your friends use psychological tactics to stay in the game can be fun. Much like "Apples to Apples" is no fun with a literal crowd.

It's a good game for playing live, not so good for online, in my opinion.

Plus I'm always viewed with inordinate suspicion in the Werwolf variant.

Well to answer some questions for those interested here is how I figured it would work. Better Ideas welcome.

We get 22 or so people that say they want to play. They each give some sort of contact info in their profiles. The moderator would send them each a role (mafia, doctor, townsfolk...) Then we open a thread here on MeTa (pending admin approval) and call it something clever like MeFia. At the top of the thread will be all the rules and a list of the people playing. In the tread people will start to speculate who is in the mafia. Then they would post there vote for the day. At the end of an allotted time period(24 hours or so) all the votes will be tallied and the person that gets the most votes will be lynched by the townsfolk. After someone is lynched the people in the mafia will message each other and figure out who they want to have bumped off. They will send that to the moderator who would post the the creative obituary of the person the mob chose to whack. The next day will start and everyone gets to accuse and vote again. The cycle continues until the there are only towns people left, or only mafia left. The last side standing wins and we complete a weird little online social experiment.

That's a simplified version of what would go on since people can message each other outside of the forum to plot against one another. And we can add different roles for people depending on what rules people like.

The interesting part of this game is watching how people play the game. Its a fun little study human behavior.

Bonus points for talking Matt, Jess, or Cortex into playing as I think it could only add to the humor of the game.

Oh and The Deej, MeFi can be a very civil place depending on what color the back ground is. In the green people are generally helpful but I think there is something about the gray that makes people a bit more rambunctious. Probably comes from the tons of threads suggesting that Matt pimp out MetaFilter with 20 inch rims, a body kit, and plasma TV's in the back. I do have to say though, given that I wasn't suggesting a change to the site I was a bit surprised by the amount of people dissing the idea. Its not like I am proposing that everyone has to play and we make it own part of the site. I guess pointing out bad ideas is something that comes with the territory in the gray. Where as in the green people our more likely to just let a bad question go by with out a response.

Like others, I'd be into a game of Mafia if we can work it out, but I don't think it makes any sense to try to do it on the site, magikker. It'd be a great big shoehorning for no compelling reason.

I have a better idea. Why don't we just start a real crime syndicate? There are lots of clever people here, doctors, lawyers, programmers, soldiers, cops, etc. Why not pick something illegal, traffic it, and tap the resources of well situated mefites along the supply or distribution chain as need be?

We could be everything that crazy people accuse the Masons and Bilderburgs of being, but we could do it for real. We could make mathowie the Keyser Soze of the internet.

Appreciate the effort, but I think I'm going to have to restrict my moves to being made while at home where (believe it or not) I have a physical board set up for this1. I tried downloading a chess program thingy to track the state of play, but the temptation to have it suggest moves for me was too high. And the spacing is all messed up for me with your diagram there.

Well as far as I can see that's a mistake, although not the type of mistake I was hoping for.
Your knight can't reach c3, besides which you have a pawn there.
I'm guessing you meant Nc6?
