Remember that deadline Patrick Leahy set at Alberto's hearing? Well, Gonzo apparently missed it. Leahy responds with a letter, subpoena included. (direct link to pdf) A follow-up to this post.

Not to douse any of the passion and lust of the Jessadmin, isn't that post for which this is a follow-up is still open?

Strange doings are afoot in the halls of power.

I just wanted to say 'afoot'.

What a cool subpoena: [in kickass old english font] hereof fail not, as you will answer your default under the pains and penalties in such cases are made and provided.

I am going to try this.

GREETING: Pursuant to lawful authority, YOU ARE HEREBY COMMANDED to bring me a pitcher and some wings.

phaedon, are you color blind?

I'm actually totally blind. Why do you ask?

yeah, I think the thread being open to follow ups is good, but realistically speaking no one checks weeks old metafilter posts. And we all know that discussing (throwing tomatoes at) items of interest is most of the fun in the blue.

So what's the etiquette here? Post in the same thread, where your comment will never be read by anyone again? Make a new metafilter post? Or is doing something like this ok?

5. The terms "you" and "your" include you individually, in your capacity as Attorney General, as well as the Department of Justice, and, without limitation, anyone presently or formerly employed there, suspended from employment there, or on administrative leave from employment there.

6. Be sure to wear those pointy shoes with the bells at the end.
posted by rob511 at 10:55 PM on May 2, 2007

Speak realistically for yourself, jourman2. If you use the "My Comments" feature, and if you originally found a topic interesting enough to comment on when it was first posted, you'll see any additions to that thread no matter how late in the game it is.

As for Metatalk, this "Metafilter-related" distinction has really come to mean virtually anything under the Sun, hasn't it?

Let me add the fuel to the fire I guess you are looking for. My thought process goes like this whenever I consider posting this.

1. I'm going to FPP this to the blue.
2. Am I fucking crazy? I'm totally going to get my asshole ripped for posting this to the blue.
3. I should post this to MeTa.
4. Am I fucking crazy? I'm totally going to get my asshole ripped for posting this to MeTa.
5. I should add this to original thread that was on the blue.
6. Are you kidding me? Nobody will even notice. Maybe one person. And this is a pretty decent development.
7. I should post this on MeTa.
8. Posted it on MeTa.
9. Then noticed thread was still open; braced from impact.
10. Decided to match snark with snark and hope they went away.
11. Did not go away.

I admit, I'm stuck between gear on this one. But with the rapidity of great posts on MeFi lately, shit man, sometimes it feels like people don't even scroll down anymore.

I stopped reading after step 4. And I think you should have, too.
posted by Dave Faris at 11:24 PM on May 2, 2007

I'm sorry. I don't mean to be so cranky, bickering over trivialities of classification. But you ought to factor in that Metatalk gets a fraction of the traffic that Metafilter gets, and so posting it here will also garner fewer eyeballs than posting it in the original thread.

And how much you want to bet that someone will make a new post about this breaking news story to the front page anyway?
posted by Dave Faris at 11:38 PM on May 2, 2007

I just noticed (yes, seriously...speaking of blind) that there's a *recent comments* tab on the front of the blue. I mean, I don't really care that this was posted here but it won't be consigned to the dustbin of the unclseen just because it's posted back in the original thread.

You mean Amberglow Watch.

The My Comment feature sucks. It only tracks the last 10 comments or so in the thread, which if you don't visit it for an hour means you miss some comments and then have to go back to the thread, find your place and catch up.

What's needed is a way to subscribe to a post and then bookmark/note the last comment you read in that thread.

Then you could go to a page that lists all your subscriptions and it'll note how many new comments have been made to thread and it'll list the last 10 comments from your bookmark (maybe make this ajax goodness, so you don't get a page of comments as default, but don't have to reload the page).

The key part is that the user would be able to manually mark where to return to in the thread.

I don't think it sucks, but that was the reason I asked for this.

It's rare that I recommend a MeTa thread for deletion, but this one has my full endorsement.
posted by Eideteker at 4:20 AM on May 3, 2007

I've recommended it before, and I'll recommend it again: co.mments.com. It allows you to bookmark threads (Metafilter and otherwise), and serves as kind of an RSS feed: if a new comment is posted in a bookmarked thread, it bumps it to the top of the list and marks it as having new comments.

In addition to the main service being RSS-like, it also offers and actual feed, so you can drop your "co.mments.com" feed into your RSS reader, and whenever someone comments in a thread you've marked, it will bump to the top of the RSS feed and flag itself as having new comments.

Advantages over "my comments" is that you can bookmark any thread, even if you haven't commented, and just want to keep an eye on it. Plus it works for lots of sites, not just MeFi.

The only drawback I've seen is that it can't handle super-monster threads, like the VT shooting or the portobello mushroom thread. I don't know where the limit is, but probably somewhere around 300 comments.
posted by Bugbread at 5:49 AM on May 3, 2007

That shouldn't be here. There's an open thread where the people who care about this will find it.

I love my senator with a white hot heat

he's cool because he's giving everybody a Politics 101 lesson -- no matter how much power you have at moment (and, in this case, how rich you already are and how rich your masters will make you for serving them so well) you never ever humiliate publicly -- and, really, needlessly -- someone; because the situation could change. Cheney should have kept things at least formally polite the way they usually are -- you just don't lash out that way in public.

unless you want people to come after your ass with some special glee after they regain a little power. and they will, eventually, oh they will.

Speak for yourself, Dave Faris. I use the "My Comments" feature all the time, and when an old thread I hadn't looked at in forever gets a new comment out of the blue, I go "why the hell is he posting in that thread? no one's reading that anymore, and it knocked one of my more recent and therefore more interesting threads off the "My Comments" page!" and then I ignore whatever that person said.

Senator, I served with gerunds. I know gerunds. Gerunds are a kind of noun. Senator, that was no gerund.

Present participlized in order to be used as a verb in the present continuous/progressive, OK. Your point stands, even if your grammar wobbles a bit. [/pedant]

I meant it more as a way to tell you all you're overthinking something trivial, rather than as a joke.
