Props to MetaFilter's Very OwnTM gomichild for debunking the story about a Japanese actress who mistook a lamb for a dog.

Gomi's blog, Cerebral Soup, been quoted in The Daily Telegraph, Yahoo News, and Snopes.

Amusingly, she's also been mentioned by the highly prestigious news.au.com, who describes her as a killjoy blogger - perhaps they're stilling holding a grudge over her role in busting the "Vegemite Banned" myth that they tried to spin into a nationalistic call to arms not too long ago.

Great work, gomichild!

I would like to Gomichild to withdraw her spurious and culturally ignorant claim that The Sun and Metro are actual news sources.

Vegemite ban as a call to arms?

Oh, no, they gave gomichild credit. Go gomichild!

That's some nice hoax-cracking there gomi.

OK, so A to gomichild for the documentation, but F- to anyone who needed any documentation to know that this was a fake.

Well done, but also what Wolfdog said. As soon as I saw the MeFi post I assumed the story would be debunked, and when I clicked on the link and saw it was the Sun, it achieved the truth status of the lunatic on the corner telling me there was a Martian in his hair.

サンキュー! [sankyuu]

I was quite surprised too that my little fact finding adventure was actually needed (and quoted) in so many places. Even more amazing is that after you spell things out sensibly people still don't believe you.

*shrugs*

Although I find it even ultra more amazing that you could write it up as a news article and then post it to a website.

And put your name to it.

Puts Alvy Ampersand down for an extra special New Years card this year.

For your next trick, could you debunk the report of Rostropovich's death?

My debunking powers only go so far....

gomichild: I have to ask, just to potentially alleviate some of the sheepishness embarrassment I feel for the FPP (though I will say in my defense that it seemed pretty fishy to me, but too good a story not to post): Had you heard the story before you saw it on MeFi?

Great work, gomichild! I love a good debunking.
posted by amyms at 10:29 AM on April 27, 2007

Oh cerebus19 sweetie I posted it earlier on MonkeyFilter myself for the same reasons. But I saw the link first on F*cked Gaijin - which is an online community for foreigners who've possibly been in Japan too long.

Actually it was while I was punning around wildly in your thread that I thought - bugger it I'll just collate this info and bung it on the ol' blog.

So you are really a Facilitator in the Debunking. You deserve your own t-shirt.

Okay, this is pretty funny.

When I saw the story on Neatorama, I commented there that it had been debunked by a MeFite. gail, the blogger at Neato, replied that she'd trust the Sydney Morning Herald over "some commentator on Metafilter." A little later gail follows up on the fakeness of the story with a long quote from gomichild's own blog! gomichild replies (posting as MJ), and tries to set her straight, but it looks like gail hasn't caught on yet.

Yeah that's the trouble with being a woman of mystery and having multiple usernames (2) I guess.

And yet they call her a killjoy for sussing out the truth. Such is the state of journalism today I guess. It's better for the story to be false and entertaining...

Congrats gomichild. I would take 'killjoy' and treat it as a badge of honor.

Erk... has Neatorama imploded? I was looking forward to reading that, and now it won't let me. You tease.

Ain't that the truth. If I had a poodle, I would totally name it Killjoy Gomichild after this.

Hey gomichild, kudos! And thanks for that link to F*cked Gaijin. I've been here (J-land) for about 12 years now, so I'm definitely F*cked, but I didn't know about that site.

That neatorama site is working now, though after reading some of the comments I sort of wish it wasn't.

Still, it's nice to know where YouTube commenters once they leave the pupal stage. Sheesh.

I'd just like to point out that it's been a full 24 hours since anyone's made a meta post. good for us!

Has there ever been a full 24 hours between MeTa posts? This may set a new record.
posted by five fresh fish at 12:54 PM on April 28, 2007

It comes along on the occasional weekend. Problem is, some Gaijin will crow that it's been 24 hours and the entire US mainland goes WTF no? and before you know it some doofus fucked up in AskMe and we're on again in the gray.

by the way, can someone tell me where the "[NOT RACIST]" thing started? I don't want to spoil the serenity of the metatalk front page asking about it. i searched the site, and can't find anything that seems like it would start a popular trend.

What [NOT RACIST] thing? Context, man, helps a lot.
posted by five fresh fish at 2:43 PM on April 28, 2007

Pfft, who needs context when you have site search?
[NOT CONTEXTIST]

The first use is here, I think. It gets repeated further down, and lo, an injoke is born.

Alvy Ampersand : "The first use is here, I think."

Nope. The first appearance was here, which got blown up into a big deal by Ambrose Chapel, and getting blown up into a big deal is one of the first steps in starting injokes.
