New windows launch on clicking very boring link April 19, 2007 8:09 AM   Subscribe

I have metafilter set to open all links in a new window so I can enjoy sweet, sweet linkage while still keeping my wholesome metafilter goodness. It's very, very convenient. However, just now I was posting to the blue and when I deleted my كشري tag (I guess Arabic support is out of the question?) clicking on the [x] spawned a new window. It probably shouldn't do that, since most similar links (adding favorites, top nav, pretty much anything other than a link in a post or comment) don't.

This is a perfect example of a bug report we don't need a MeTa thread about. Matt has email.

yes, how dare he.

Yeah, that should probably be fixed. Matt and Jess are both kind of unavailable today, though, so he may not see this.

Well, I guess now that I've destroyed MetaFilter, e-mailing Matt is pointless, isn't it.

Look, I am an excellent ColdFusion programmer. Just give me root access and I'll fix it in a jiffy.

Matt and Jess aren't around huh? So its just you minding the store? I am going to start acting crazy all over the place in the hopes that you can't catch all of them. Here is the FPP I am about to make:

Drive is a new show on Fox. It is about people driving around.
It has the dude from Firefly, but instead of driving a spaceship,
he is driving a car. Or a truck I think. I watched a little bit of it,
and it was pretty stupid. Lol amirite!

Heh.

You missed! I guess your skinny girl arms are better equipped for playing little ditties on the guitar than for weilding the banhammer. Off to cause chaos!

FWIW, the first category in the list-box when you make a new MeTa post is "metafilter >> bugs"

But how is a bug report supposed to devolve into a 300-comment flameout with GIFs of elephants shitting?

Or since there's no IMG tag anymore, ASCII graphics of elephants shitting?
posted by arto at 10:13 AM on April 19, 2007

Who needs GIFs when you have words:
Fuck you and all of your elephant shit-fucking keyboards, I'm outta this thread.
...something like that.

I know 2 things about you, Deathalicious:

a) You destroyed metafilter.
b) You like sex! In fact, you are a person who likes sex as much as a prostitute likes sex!

yes, but the problem is that it should say, "bugs Plutor deems worthy of metatalk." matt was meaning to fix that, but he and jessamyn aren't around today.

Right after I do my Drive FPP, I am putting this answer in the "Am I too old to find a husband and have kids?" AskMe:

First of all, don't listen to all these hippy-dippy "you don't need a husband and babies just live your life" people. They are probably twisted loveless freaks. You deserve a husband and a big house and a passel of rugmonkeys, you just have to be willing to do what it takes to get them.

Now I'm sorry that you broke up with your boyfriend, but you may want to cancel the little pity party that you're throwing yourself. You ain't gonna snag you a husband that way. You're not in the "better just throw in the towel and get a cat zone". You are just in "the settling zone".

Do like the girl above and lower those standards a smidge. I bet you know some guys that maybe weren't A-list dating material in your twenties, but I bet they are looking pretty good now huh? Give them a call.

Also remember that it is like fishing. You can't jerk on the line as soon as you get a nibble. It is a delicate process reeling that thing in. It never hurts to play the old "I forgot to take my pill" card either. Its a classic for a reason.

Remember, the game isn't over, it is just in its final innings and so you have to play harder.

Good luck!

You can't catch them all Cortex!

shmegegge: "bugs Plutor deems worthy of metatalk."

This bug report requires no confirmation that it happens in other browsers or on other operating systems. It needs no discussion amongst the community about whether or not one solution is better than another. The bug and its fix hold no deep repercussions for MetaFilter as a whole. And bugs get fixed faster if you email or IM Matt. If I were the developer of this website, and people felt that the right thing to do every time they found a misspelled word in the FAQ or a configuration option applied where it shouldn't be or a broken link was to wave it about in public, it'd get old fast.

It's not that it's unworthy of MetaTalk, it's that it doesn't need to be here, and the life-cycle of a post to MeTa is short enough already.

But, y'know, I'm sorry for having an opinion.
posted by Plutor at 11:54 AM on April 19, 2007

meta life cycles aren't that short, and I've never heard of a post running off the front page of metatalk so fast that the usual suspects simply didn't have time to notice it.

but honestly, i'm just fucking around. i don't have that strong an opinion about this and i'm bored at work, so sorry if i offended.

The only thing I've really noticed falling off MeTa quickly is meetup threads. But it's been quiet on that front lately, and the new sidebar thinger helps.

Whatever. Hugs for everyone!

Assuming that people do post bug reports here, there's a nifty way to keep track of them :
http://metatalk.metafilter.com/thread.cfm?category_id=1

Now, if the fixed or "dealt with" ones were closed threads, I suppose the open ones might be the to-do list. Imagine that. :-)

And just because it's open and everything, your arabic showed up looking pretty curly and all in the post here. What kind of support don't they have?
posted by jacalata at 7:14 PM on April 19, 2007

While we're all here, it's kinda annoying that all the FAQ jumps open up in a new window (or tab, in my case), too.

Since this is open, I want to point out that reinsurance is the second least interesting thing to read about in the entire world.

Retrocession is the least interesting thing.

It's pretty wacky trying to select those arab characters as well as the adjacent words. Surely I'm not the only drunk mefite finding that weird?
posted by Catfry at 2:58 AM on April 20, 2007

That's not an exclusively MeFi thing, or a even bug. That's what happens when you have RTL text inside LTR text.
posted by Plutor at 5:18 AM on April 20, 2007

Aha! fun. Forgot that was the way with the arabic, but it makes sense that the selector would behave so.
