It would indeed be mysterious if the text at that link said "This user either doesn't exist, PERIOD." But look closely.

This website is currently the #1 result for a search on Google of 50000.

I don't know what sucks more. That that is the case, or that a wonderful sockpuppet opportunity has gone wanting with the 50,000th account bnecause some prick wouldn't pay the $5 required.

Also, user 50,000 doesn't correspond to the number on the front page. The userIDs are about 700 or so ahead of the user numbers shown on the front page.

There's also the conspiracy that there was a 50000—a good man, a decent man, a man you'd be proud to call Mefite—but his user number was so covetous that he had to be put down for the good of the site, lest we tear ourselves apart scrabbling for purchase on the little patch of dirt he called home.

But I'm not sure I believe that.

So would I and about a few thousand other active MeFites. Hell, I'd pay $10. But I say Matt should put the account on eBay if the user dosen't activate the account relatively soon, and see how much the open market would pay for it.
