Pictures from the Sydney meet-up at the Australian Hotel. Good times had with Jessamyn and her sister, as well as the Sydney contingent.
Well, the Emu pizza went down fine and no surprises. Must have been the salad. Sorry to hear that you had a tough time of it.

The single-eye-goggle is definitely the better way to go. And the brass connectors complete it nicely.

I refuse to believe that this is a real building. It's clearly an accessory from somebody's model railroad.
This, on the other hand, is definitely a real bar. I envy those who drank there.

No food illness here. Kate and I did go through some totally fun running around late last night when the last room at the Y wound up having no AC and no windows that opened. We wound up moving to a place a little south (YAY wotif.com for letting me make a cheapie online reservation at 10 pm!) which had freezing airco, decent internet, a Malaysian place up the road, sweetheart desk guys and great old movies on the television machine. It was great to meet all of you and I'm only sad that we're leaving tomorrow morning.
Also, WTF is with the thousands of giant bats that fly over Sydney around sunset? Everyone we assked seemed to have no idea what we were talking about but they were there... or maybe my food poisoning had different side effects than web-goddess's.

Not just Sydney, jessamyn. Those are fruit bats. We get them here at sunset, too. I guess the locals are so used to them that they don't notice them much.
It's not a good idea to park your car under trees where these things roost, because the shit that will be plastered all over your car within minutes will strip the paint right off.

Poor web-goddess. It would seem that not even citizenship papers will protect you from the backlash that inevitably follows eating an animal from the national coat of arms. Incidentally, neither the kangaroo nor the emu can take a backwards step -- I've never quite known if that was an original reason for their inclusion or scuttlebutt that came up later.
But thanks all. Good times. I think a fair number of those fruit bats were heading to the Domain and Hyde Park to roost in the Morton Bay fig trees. At least they don't bite. It was wonderful to meet jessamyn and Kate. (Although I would never claim cover boy status, they are certainly the worst photos I've seen of myself in my life. qwip, I'm looking at you man.)

Oh! If you want to see the fruit bats up close, go down to the Botanic Gardens during the day. They roost in these trees right in the middle, and it's really fun to watch the tourists suddenly realize that the hundreds of housecat-sized objects hanging in the trees are sleeping bats.

Oooooh....I saw mention of emu; thought you must have partook. I've had 'roo but wouldn't, like, travel to the next suburb to a restaurant specially chasing it down (now there's a restaurant idea! Hunt and Kill your lunch with a boomerang!). I don't think I could ever eat emu. Both squick and fear - one of their relatives would surely run me down and peck me to death, or eviscerate me with their spiky claw.

web-goddess: no problems with the emu pizza here. In fact, mine was so damn tasty that I plan to head back for another as soon as humanly possible.
I also took a coupla snaps, but need to find or buy a camera-usb cable before I can post them. I regret not getting a piccy with the barmaid whose t-shirt featured a variety of unidentifiable mushroom species. They looked pretty tasty, whatever they were.
Why do my goggles always end up skewiff in photos? Must be the beer. And what's languagehat got to do with it?

Plus, photoshopping cost at least another pint and half an Emu pizza.
And, Jessamyn, those bats are awesome. They fly through Hyde Park every night and it's a kick to see them swoop silently down and snag a drink from the reflecting pool. And they're cute too. Like flying bunnies. That could kill you as soon as look at you. As long as "you" means "mango".
