Big thanks to the folks in that thread. Some even offered up money. We went from 30 to 50 kids and spent MUCH less money. The film was Bridge to Tarabithia which the kids just finished reading a week ago.

I just marked some best answers, but that's kinda not fair because every answer helped me, either by pointing me in the right direction or inspiring me with anectodotes and offering up money.

mr_crash_davis: specifically my wife and her friends hit ALL of the local theaters and found Ultra Star Hazard Center. Ultra Star was mentioned in the thread and was an early favorite because of their willingness to help. The manager was incredibly organized and the event was seemless. I was surprised to find out how civic minded they actually were.

We saw art exhibited there from local artists and there were also study groups just from local colleges meeting there. It was a great scene!

yay, that's awesome. I got to start seeing movies on my own when I hit 12 or 13 and it was really great. I would have loved it if my whole class could have seen it.

Bonus points for making them read the book first.

I think Mefi should adopt these kids. We can set up a virtual tip jar and send them all sorts of places.

as for opera, does Lincoln Center still do the Young People's Concerts? It's how i got to go for free when i was little--it was my first and only exposure to classical music outside of Bugs Bunny.

Oh, heck no! If they want to go on trips, they can do like all the other kids in NYC, and sell M&Ms on the subway.

One of my favorites when I was that age. I'm glad kids are still reading it. Did the movie do it justice?

Yep, the movie was good enough to keep the kids riveted. And yea, I cried-a lot! But so did most of the kids, so, whatever man.
