Buffalo Meetup? February 13, 2007 7:26 PM   Subscribe

There seems to be a surprising number of people in the greater Western NY/Buffalo area. How about a meetup?

Maybe next weekend at Gabriel's Gate on Allen?
There's a game every Saturday other than St. Pat's through the rest of regular season, so how about a Sunday afternoon? Maybe the 25th?
Any thoughts?

Maybe they are from many far-away places but are just temporarily trapped by that big snowstorm.
And when the snow melts they'll go back to their homes and try to forget that awful time when they were stuck on the turnpike and were frozen and miserable.
They would never speak of it; some might've lost toes. Fingers.
Just saying.

Shut up, Dizzy. I live vicariously through meetups, and the ones where they eat each other to survive are the best ones, okay?

I'd eat you,cgc373, but I'm not sure you're kosher.
posted by Dizzy at 7:49 PM on February 13, 2007

Pfft, I've been to meetups where we ate each other just for fun.

I wish you'd both hush up and just eat ME for once.

I married into a Buffalo family. If it wasn't for my in-laws, I would live there. The good news is they live right near Duff's which in my opinion (almost fact) is the best place for wings and beer anywhere. While I will not be at the meet-up, could you email some wings and beer to me. Email in profile.

Great. Now I've got styrofoam stuck in my Superdrive.
And I just ordered "Girls of MeFi" from Netflix.
You're welcome, JohnnyGun.

You call this a snowstorm? Wimps. Why, I remember a snowstorm where I could climb out my second story windows into a waiting drift.

This? It's only a dusting! Hardly even worth getting out the shovel!

Hey, I was thinking it would be great to come out to visit from Santa Cruz, CA for a meetup in Buffalo this February!

*snurk!*

Take a lotta pictures, I'll be counting on the visuals to aid my vicarious frostbite project.

I'm in. But I heard that is February Vacation week for those with kids. I might have the in-laws here for the weekend but I'm sure I could sneak out for a bit.

Or we could wait until ROU_Xenophobe and the others move in...

I'll ask the missus, but I expect we're up for something when we get there. Not the night we get there though, unless you want the meetup to consist of lugging our crap from the truck.
posted by ROU_Xenophobe at 7:32 AM on February 14, 2007

I have no prefrence for any particular days, I just pulled that one out because I know it's a pay week for me. If anyone has a different weekend that works better I'm all for it.

(didn't know it was a vacation week, either. no kids, so I don't keep track other than by seeing there's no one in the school across the street from me)
posted by Kellydamnit at 7:38 AM on February 14, 2007

Feel the need to add pay week= kelly doesn't look silly buying beer with rolled change. ;)

And seriously, what's with the big deal everyone made of this snow? Seven inches in Allentown and that's the end of the world my coworkers were all howling about??
posted by Kellydamnit at 7:43 AM on February 14, 2007

yea, c'mon. it's not like it's the storm of the century. real buffalonians (native or imported) are made of tougher stuff and don't complain about this slight inconvenience.

Wouldn't most people howl if they had seven inches in "Allentown"?

Here in mid-state Massachusetts the snow is so deep it's almost completely buried my intern. Guess I should send out some soup or something.
Maybe later--- "Wheel" is on!

Anyone know CPR?
Just asking.
For a friend.
posted by Dizzy at 2:17 PM on February 14, 2007

Never mind resuscitation, Dizzy. How was "Wheel"?

Great episode!
Contestant Kenisha solved the puzzle right away: "Restraining Order".
Gotta call the college for a new helper-outer though.
After I notify her folks, or some damn thing...

I'm puzzled. Can't the next intern just call the first one's parents or whatever it is that undergrads have?
posted by ROU_Xenophobe at 5:01 PM on February 14, 2007

I remember undergrads having dorm parents, but that was a long time ago, in another country, and the wench . . . I forget what happened to the wench.

ROU_X---
You mean like a "phone tree" thingie?
Trouble is, what with the weather and my mail-order business and Indochina I've been going through 'terns like kleenex lately; I used an assumed name so they won't send any more pesky "Campus Police" looking for "samples" or "bits of hair and skin" "buried" in "my" "backyard".
Yikes.
"CSI" gets a 30 share and everyone gets up on their hind legs.
In my day, forensics was debate squad and nobody got indicted.

The missus (yes, that's me) will definitely be up for something when we get there.

(I will have to be both a Leafs fan and a Sabres fan. I'm just a wee bit enthused about living in a proper hockey town again, I think I remember what the Eastern Conference looks like)

Dizzy, the obtuse obscure right angled clanging bullshit was ok the first time. Now you are just shitting.
Smoke another joint, you Worcester scumbag. You are not funny. Go prank call the local pizza joint, you bored snowed in, stoned shit.
posted by kuujjuarapik at 9:23 PM on February 14, 2007

kuujj...---
I'm sorry you live in Buffalo, and I'm sorry I offended you.
But tomorrow you will still live in Buffalo, and I will still be clanging.
posted by Dizzy at 9:30 PM on February 14, 2007

kuujjuarapik, I apologize, too. A meetup thread's really not the best place to do dumb free-association jokes, and I was kinda egging Dizzy on.
posted by cgc373 at 9:48 PM on February 14, 2007

And calling me a scumbag is not the best idea in any thread.
Even though I AM a scumbag.
Just saying.
posted by Dizzy at 9:53 PM on February 14, 2007

(True enough on the insult tip, Dizzy. I assumed there was some bad blood between you that I don't know about. A back story sort of thing.)
posted by cgc373 at 10:01 PM on February 14, 2007

I didn't know this person even existed until he Kevorked me.
That said, maybe he was being playful; sometimes sarcasm is hard to pull off with text alone.
Thoughts, kuujj?

Dizzy, don't go thinkin Woostah is all that. It's no better than Buffalo and a far step down from Amherst or Northampton.
posted by jdfan at 12:07 PM on February 15, 2007

jdfan---
I don't remember praising Woo or slagging Buff in this or any other thread.
I do remember my mom telling me to try to be civil to people and to give them the benefit of the doubt.
I moved here for love.
That is the only reason I'm here.
Woostah does have a drive-thru Starbucks, a halfway-decent cigar bar, and a two pretty-good organic markets.
I dig that.

But tomorrow you will still live in Buffalo

I was teasing. I used to live in Western Mass and the intra-state rivalry was amusing. The last time I was in Woosta was four presidential administrations ago. Clearly things have changed ;-) At least it's not Pittsfield.

jdfan---
Pittsfield!
My wife went to grad skool at Williams and I remember three things about The Pitts--excellent thrift stores, parking meters that took nickels (!), and an unrelenting, soul-crushing bleakness abrogated only by the availability of Busch beer for 75 cents a bottle.
The rest is a blur.

I want to go to a meetup! GG sounds good; there's also a new place at Allen & College which intrigues. I do work some Sundays, but it varies betweenafternoon and evening.

I also used to live in Western Mass (Amherst)! Go figure.
posted by Riverine at 5:59 PM on February 16, 2007

Pittsfield is legendary. Given everything I ever heard about it, one would think it were name for anatomy rather than a person.

Buffalo could learn a lot from Amherst and Northampton. Like Thorne's Market. And Faces. And putting the university downtown (well, a lot closer than UB is to Buffalo).

Sooo... are we doing it?

On topic discussion--how thrilling!

The next Sunday I have totally clear is March 11. If that isn't too far away, I would love to attend a meetup that day.

Off topic again:

Dizzy,
First, I apologize for calling you a scumbag and a stoned shit. I don't know you and it wasn't right of me to make those judgments. I hope you'll accept that.
That said, I don't think that a meetup thread is an appropriate place to crap up. And you were doing that.

On topic again:
Is anyone still out there?
posted by kuujjuarapik at 4:25 PM on February 22, 2007

I still want to meet, but I think this thread is dead.
