NYC Meetup February 5, 2007 6:39 PM   Subscribe

NYCFilter: Do you have dinner plans in the city tomorrow night? Great, me too -- wanna have drinks together beforehand? Let's waste time together in that layover hour between your manhattan day job and the commute to the outer boroughs -- or whatever your situation is at precisely 5:30pm.

Would enjoy the company of any mefites in the area, especially if you're also occupying time before the next engagement. It would be like those happy hours in airports, that easiness between strangers when everyone's on their way to someplace else.

First-timers encouraged! I've learned so much here, but have yet to meet a single person from this community (that i've known about, obviously). I'll be at the Yuca Bar (EV) tomorrow night, 6-7:30. Drop by if you're in the hood! No social agenda, just a chance to say hello to some of you for the first time.

Actually, I'm open to any bar suggestions. Yuca is where my dinner plans are so it was my first thought.

Sorry, it's off from work and straight to band practice for me tomorrow. Enjoy.

But it's cold. So very, very cold.

Yea, trecking over to Avenue A after dark in this weather.... doesn't really sound like a whole lot of fun. Maybe somewhere a little closer to Union Square? There's always our old haunt, Revival.

I got a volunteer commitment that night.

Avenue A isn't THAT bad, TPS--I go to the Pioneer Theater all the time.

I didn't like Double Down much when I checked it out on my own--too snotty. Mama's Bar at 3rd and B has much less attitude--and their own pizza vodka (just the herbs ;-) )!

I've got skool. Again.

Someplace near Union Square = maybe. Ave A = decidedly not (it's like 2 degrees out!)

ok, ok, i've succumbed to the weather excuse as well (all it took was an icy blast from this morning's walk to the train!)

this invitation is officially tabled. let's try again in warmer times...

Dang, and I was all set to show up. Cold weather makes going to bars better, not worse. And the walk from the E. Village to 2 Ave (F/V) or Astor Place (6), or 1 Ave/14 St (L) ain't so bad. Yuca's about equidistant from them all, too. And there's a buncha other amenable joints nearby what have nice warm drinks and central heating.

Sure, it's fuckin' brick outside. Ya'd think youse'd never been cold before, though.

Yeah. And that's far! If it were near just one, I'd go. But I live a block from the subway and work two short blocks from it and it was so cold this morning, my eyeballs nearly froze. So there.

You sound like my dad now. He lived in Minnesota for 40 years and lived in Atlanta the last 20. He's totally wussified now. When it hits 30, he totally freaks out.

This morning, just before dawn, I went to my roof and sat on my knees wearing nothing but a loincloth, meditating. At random intervals, an acolyte splashed ice water against my back and beat me about the shoulders with a birch rod until blood rose from my welts and froze on my back. When I stood to walk downstairs and face the day, my knuckles felt a slight chill. It's only truly cold when my knuckles ache and my fingertips split away from the nails; that's when the flesh is ready to turn black and fall away. On those days I'll settle for an ice bath and a rousing spot of gunplay.

Really, though, don't you people like entering a bar from the cold? The flush on your pretty faces, your bright chapped lips, and the tears in your eyes, not to mention the rise of sweat across your noses, is positively post-coital.

I've said too much.

Ha ha, breezeway. Whatever. I should note I get up at 5.35. And then swim. And then, after that, I walked across town with wet hair. And that is true.

You big fibber. I'm your only acolyte, and I've been home in my red PJ's all day.

Yes, as long as you plan on spending the night at the bar, that's fine. Otherwise, you're setting yourself to go out again, when it's colder, and the wait for the train is longer, and you're tired. And probably drunk too.
