Adding Favorites January 25, 2007 11:37 AM   Subscribe

This is the thread where we say that the "add favorites from page" icon being tested rocks.

Really, it's very cool. And it seems to be site-wide!

or alternately, this is the thread where I feel sheepish and silly for not noticing that we could add favorites from the front pages of mefi, ask, etc. before...
posted by koeselitz at 11:45 AM on January 25, 2007

We removed the brackets, because it is kind of crufty with them there. Now it's just a tiny plus sign next to the comments link.
posted by mathowie (staff) at 11:53 AM on January 25, 2007

IMHO, crufty beats inconsistent. Looks weird to me to have the brackets inside but not outside.
posted by amro at 11:58 AM on January 25, 2007

I like it, but it's ugly. Is it time to create a column for meta-info?
posted by onalark at 11:58 AM on January 25, 2007

Slightly less ugly.
posted by dame at 11:59 AM on January 25, 2007

It's not "ugly", it's just different. Your eyes will gloss over it in no time; it's one character.

dame, got any actual suggestions? Or does matt have to play cold, warmer, warmer, hot to satisfy you?

Now I'm wondering what it would look like in thread if there were no brackets. Hmmmm....
posted by ThePinkSuperhero at 12:09 PM on January 25, 2007 [1 favorite]

Maybe put it before the number of comments? It's just kinda floating where it is. I dunno, it's just eye-catching.
posted by muddgirl at 12:10 PM on January 25, 2007

Well, it's better without the brackets.
posted by muddgirl at 12:10 PM on January 25, 2007

Yes. My actual suggestion is to just leave shit alone. But no one ever listens. And I noticed it as soon as I reloaded, and I'm pretty sure I will. But TPS, it is really hard to argue with you here and on IM at the same time.

You know what I wouldn't miss if we got rid of it? The (# New) Count on the front page next to each thread. I don't use them (does anyone?), they don't seem to update as quickly as the threads do, and with the + to the right of them, the + does look a little out there on it's own. The front page would probably look cleaner without them.
posted by ThePinkSuperhero at 12:23 PM on January 25, 2007 [1 favorite]

Hey! That's the only cruft I use. (Other than checking my favorites count for self-esteem purposes.)
posted by dame at 12:28 PM on January 25, 2007 [3 favorites]

Hmm, I suppose it is helpful to have some sort of visual ding letting you know that the thread has some new comments....
posted by ThePinkSuperhero at 12:33 PM on January 25, 2007 [1 favorite]

I use the (# new) as well, though not as much as I used to as my dependence on My Comments has gone from affectionate to crippling.
posted by cortex at 12:35 PM on January 25, 2007 [1 favorite]

I wouldn't mind seeing the "Post new comment" text that appears for posts with 0 comments go away. It's just two links to the same thread as far as I can tell.
posted by Rhomboid at 12:36 PM on January 25, 2007

I agree with TPS re: # new count.

TPS is also probably right about the "one character" point, and about getting used to it. So while I fully acknowledge that it might just be because I have a hard time adjusting to new things, I noticed the "+" right away, and didn't like it. As an alternative, how about... um... a little heart.

It's not just the visual. Clicking on it takes you to the anchor for the first "new" comment (so you don't have to scroll past stuff you've already read).

"Bugs" is clearly the default category because our head curmudgeon, exhausted after years of slaving in his basement in the sway of millions of blue-screened losers, feels as though Metafilter itself is a bug.

I don't like it, at least for askme. I think it just encourages people to jump to conclusions about how great a question might be, without going inside to find out it is actually pointless and rambling. Just sayin'.

Which is why we often see

Dear AskMe: my dog just died a horrible death; he fell into a chasm while I was out walking him, and all I heard was "hwrOOOOO *splat*". Also, my grandmother has cancer, and my parents beat me mercilessly. I don't know if I can go on.

For me, it's not about unfavoriting uninteresting threads; I unfavorite them when I'm done reading them. They could have been very interesting, but when I'm done with them, out they go. I have often wondered if others unfavorite threads once they've read them; I'm inclined to believe they don't.

I think a heart would pop out of the page too much.

What songs should I put on this mix tape? ♥
Should I break up with my car obsessed boyfriend? ♥
Could I outrun a bear in the woods if I was wearing birkenstocks? ♥

That seems too huggy for Metafilter. Maybe if they were empty hearts, which might have the side effect of highlighting our* general misanthropy.

I like the plus signs, tho.

* except TPS. Go, TPS!

Hmm. I guess I thought favoriting was aimed more at calling attention to especially good, perhaps universally interesting questions or FPPs and provide feedback to the OP. Do you favorite comments or answers so you can go back and read them again later?

Perhaps I am too new to metafilter to really understand this favorites concepts.

You may favorite this comment for later perusal, if you'd like.

No; I believe favorites are first and foremost a way for users to track posts and comments. Though people joke about using them to bolster their self-esteem, this is not the primary purpose.

Do you favorite comments or answers so you can go back and read them again later?
Yes, I believe that's what I said.

I'm pretty indifferent one way or another, as I'm sure I'll get used to it, but I keep seeing a * instead of a + and my brain keeps telling me that there is a footnote involved somewhere.

I've been reading Pratchett lately, so I'm seeing footnotes everywhere.

Matt - I don't remember if this has been covered before or not, but is there a reason why the option doesn't appear in "Recent Comments" view?
posted by yhbc at 3:24 PM on January 25, 2007

yhbc, it's just on the front page recent post tab for now.

I added it to the front page today because people asked for it, and especially since there is a My Favorites tab on the sites. So it works like this: you check the front page of mefi or ask mefi a couple times a day, you scan over stuff, then click + on the 5 or 6 things that look interesting. You pop open the My Favorites tab and check just those out. Later on, you check the tab again for new comments since you last read it, etc.

It's basically a way to let people mark stuff to save for later so it shows up in the My Favorites tab without having to go into every thread you want to track.

And yes, favorites also works as a way for people to save the best stuff on the site. It's sometimes a bookmark, sometimes a vote, and/or both at once.

It's a dessert and a floorpolish.

Looking at the MeTa front page just now with tired, dry eyes and my contact lenses a bit shifty, it seemed like all the posts had best answers.

Aside from that, supernifty, and looks great to me. Thanks Matt!

Ditto. Of course, the link only takes you to the oldest new comment (if that makes sense) if your connection is fast enough to load the page quickly, otherwise it just opens at the top of the thread, so for people on dialup (they still exist?), it might seem a bit useless, expecially on long threads.

If you called them bookmarks, you wouldn't have to keep explaining this.

They're purposely vague. I don't want them to be just votes or just bookmarks. I've seen other communities go that route and they're limited in what they can do with the results.

I like that they're flexible enough to be used both ways, that was the whole point.
