Brooklyn Meetup January 2, 2007 5:44 PM Subscribe
Lots of members in and around Williamsburg and Bushwick in Brooklyn. What about a meet-up?
...and the Williamsburg bashing begins.
I'm down. When good for people?

I've been in Williamsburg since 1989 (with a 3-year hiatus). It's still a great place to live.
Many evenings and weekends are good for me, particularly with some notice. Probably earlier in the week is better.
I hate PBR. Note that the excellent Brooklyn Brewery is in Williamsburg, for example (in fact, they are open on Friday night it seems).

Man, I can't believe Mefites are living in Bushwick. My family used to have a roofing supply business there, on Irving Avenue. I worked there summers as a teen and pre-teen, and it was, hmmm, educational. I learned what needles and crack vials looked like, saw cops bust into a crackhouse around the corner, was dragged inside by my dad in front of a fistfight that turned into a knifefight. Saw two girls fight each other like I have never seen. First time I saw a prostitute. Anyway, that was in the late eighties, early nineties. I gotta go back there sometime soon and see what it looks like now.

First time I saw a prostitute.
One of my fondest memories was the first time I saw a prostitute. Somewhere in Hell's Kitchen, my dad & I were waiting for a ride, and some woman had hung up her shingle on the opposite corner. After we'd been waiting for a while the neighborhood cranky old man approached her for his daily harangue about doing her thing in broad daylight. She yells back, "Hey! I didn't ask this guy to bring his kid out here to watch!"
Good times, people. Good times.

Poppo, it's still JUST LIKE THAT. Except now you can pay $985/psf for a new-built cardboard condo surrounded by trust-fund rich artists who won't give reality the time of day. And celebrate it as a rich, burgeoning gem of a wonderful place to pay $5 for a warm PBR in a can.

Dame, at least, apparently, you have a condo in the ugliest trendy neighborhood since Williamsburg to show for it. All I have is a rental near Park Slope (yes, yes, the Slope sucks to in many new and different ways as well) and lots of educational debt.

But as I said, Park Slope has its drawbacks too and the Mommyzillas you mention are sure one of them. I'd rather get run over by a fat, spoiled housewife than a fat, spoiled hipster - more assets to sue.
And no, I don't live in Park Slope. I live near it. Reading for the win!

Park Slope is all drawbacks. (And so is Windsor Terrace or whatever faux-slope hood you live in.) But enjoy your shitty subway ride and horrible neighbors. And don't forget your work shift at the co-op. How else will you meet the indie-on-the-outside corporate-on-the-inside fuck dumb enough to support you and the sprog you will soon be buying condos in the South Bronx for? Maybe they'll at least have the manners to not go into threads about neighborhoods they hate, though coming from your shallow loins and cheesy vag probably not.

Man, what is with Brooklynites and reading? [imagine smiley here] The Bushwick Country Club has okay beer and an outside, but it looks like the chance of rain is like 70 percent. The L and G may break sometimes, but the F always blows.
Barcade is kinda noisy, but I haven't been early.
Six is not the afternoon.
I vote Union Pool, but am fine with whatever.

Mea culpa, Dame. I'm truly SORRY about assuming you are fat but you know what they say, when someone gets as nasty and defensive as you when you say the word fat...it usually means they are. You acted like a spurned bitcj when I said that word, and I naturally assumed....But making me much more curious is: What are you really bitter about?
Duff's sounds fabulous.

No, a lot of us have met each other and do know each other. Or people look at past meetup photos and look for familiar faces. Every now and then we make a sign, but at 6 p.m. on a Saturday, I doubt there will be a huge crowd. I try to keep a lookout for people who look like they're looking for a group of people that they're too embarrassed to approach on their own. Those tend to be Mefites.

That we're something and parochial, I'd imagine. Though a New Englander, especially one who lives in what may be the most parochial city in the country (both of which I generally like--but still), making that point may hasten the return of messiahs pot and kettle.

That you all moved there from out of the region to be part of a scene. And because of that you measure the perceived coolness of the region down to a block-by-block reading, and you'll turn on someone from another Culture Clan as soon as you think no one is watching.
But I don't care about that so much. Mostly I just don't like people that I suspect are even passive Yankees fans.

The MeFite demo (especially the one arguing over Brooklyn hoods) and the bandwagon Yankee demo do not have huge overlaps, dude. Rest easy.
And of course we moved here to be part of something, scene or not--probably because we came from towns we didn't like for whatever reason. Holy cow, you've found the secret shame of NYC! The city never advertises itself as that ever at all.
But I'll dis South Brooklynites to people who watch, too. Do you like to watch?

That's just the way it is, sonofslim. There was a question about it in the city section years ago--I think it has to do with unification and the settled areas of Brooklyn then.
Nassau County is just a bunch of strip mall loving mooks who couldn't even hack the suburban wastes of Queens or Staten Island (because those places still got Negroes and Chinese) but would get beaten up in Bay Ridge. Kids like to pretend they're gangsta, but would give up their wallets full of cash earmarked for American Eagle to the first Brooklyn hoodlum who looked at 'em funny. Bankrupt, Republican fuckers, getting a bigger subsidy for their trains than MTA riders, then cloggin up our roads with their SUVs anyways.

wow, I really thought wmsburg bashing was passe by now. Isn't the arc 'cheap space' --> 'super cool / trendy b/c artists move in' --> 'overdone / bashed for being trendy' -->'overpriced condos' --> no longer particularly interesting or out of the ordinary. what I mean is, no one thinks williamsburg is a hidden gem anymore, so hasn't the backlash died off too? It's just another subway stop.

Mayor Curley's secret New York theory isn't that far from the truth to be honest.
I have specific theories myself. For example, I've been to perhaps a dozen parties in Brooklyn Heights, Prospect Park and Park Slope -- and they all sucked, severally and individually (typically, white people in ties dancing stiffly to hackneyed black music). So I don't go to parties there any more (except dinner parties).
Williamsburg used to have a lot of amazing parties -- that's why I moved there. There are still some amazing parties but many of them are in Bushwick now.
