I happen to think that Williamsburg gets a bad rap. I'll come.

I've been in Williamsburg since 1989 (with a 3-year hiatus). It's still a great place to live.

Many evenings and weekends are good for me, particularly with some notice. Probably earlier in the week is better.

I hate PBR. Note that the excellent Brooklyn Brewery is in Williamsburg, for example (in fact, they are open on Friday night it seems).

A: I think it would be a very good idea!

Sorry -- sorry -- Queens's fine too.

Queens sucks. You not supposed to drink Corona in Corona Park, and it's too cold to go swimming.

I'm down. I live in Bushwick and it is wonderful. But the Brooklyn Brewery supports Ratner--it therefore is not.

Man, I can't believe Mefites are living in Bushwick. My family used to have a roofing supply business there, on Irving Avenue. I worked there summers as a teen and pre-teen, and it was, hmmm, educational. I learned what needles and crack vials looked like, saw cops bust into a crackhouse around the corner, was dragged inside by my dad in front of a fistfight that turned into a knifefight. Saw two girls fight each other like I have never seen. First time I saw a prostitute. Anyway, that was in the late eighties, early nineties. I gotta go back there sometime soon and see what it looks like now.
posted by poppo at 8:51 AM on January 3, 2007

First time I saw a prostitute.

One of my fondest memories was the first time I saw a prostitute. Somewhere in Hell's Kitchen, my dad & I were waiting for a ride, and some woman had hung up her shingle on the opposite corner. After we'd been waiting for a while the neighborhood cranky old man approached her for his daily harangue about doing her thing in broad daylight. She yells back, "Hey! I didn't ask this guy to bring his kid out here to watch!"

Good times, people. Good times.

Poppo, there are still hookers in Bushwick. And condos! It's win-win.
posted by dame at 9:53 AM on January 3, 2007

Poppo, it's still JUST LIKE THAT. Except now you can pay $985/psf for a new-built cardboard condo surrounded by trust-fund rich artists who won't give reality the time of day. And celebrate it as a rich, burgeoning gem of a wonderful place to pay $5 for a warm PBR in a can.
posted by bunnycup at 10:03 AM on January 3, 2007

Wait, we get trust funds? What the fuck? Where is mine? I been workin' this shitty job, livin' just a block above Irving, ignoring reality, and I gots no money to show for it. Then again my condo is in a refurbished factory and is well built. Is that where I went wrong? Fuck.

PS: Greg Nog, why you be givin' away our secrets? Did you win Saturday?

Man, was there or will there ever be a Washington Heights/Inwood, Bronx meetup? People, if you're out there we need to represent. Maybe huddle together in a bodega or something.

I'd like to attend. I might bring some non MeFi guests.
posted by kkokkodalk at 10:16 AM on January 3, 2007

Dame, at least, apparently, you have a condo in the ugliest trendy neighborhood since Williamsburg to show for it. All I have is a rental near Park Slope (yes, yes, the Slope sucks to in many new and different ways as well) and lots of educational debt.
posted by bunnycup at 10:21 AM on January 3, 2007

You live in Park Slope and you are talking smack about where people live? I hope you get run down by a stroller, elitist yuppie scum.
posted by dame at 10:50 AM on January 3, 2007

At least I'm paying $$$ to live in a decent neighborhood rather than a glorified crack den my mommy bought me. But as I said, Park Slope has its drawbacks too and the Mommyzillas you mention are sure one of them. I'd rather get run over by a fat, spoiled housewife than a fat, spoiled hipster - more assets to sue.

And no, I don't live in Park Slope. I live near it. Reading for the win!

Yeah, Son, yr right - at least it's not Washington Hieghts or worse...the BRONX....

(j/k, whatever, everywhere in NYC sucks equally depending on who/what you hate most).

There.
posted by bunnycup at 10:58 AM on January 3, 2007

Park Slope is all drawbacks. (And so is Windsor Terrace or whatever faux-slope hood you live in.) But enjoy your shitty subway ride and horrible neighbors. And don't forget your work shift at the co-op. How else will you meet the indie-on-the-outside corporate-on-the-inside fuck dumb enough to support you and the sprog you will soon be buying condos in the South Bronx for? Maybe they'll at least have the manners to not go into threads about neighborhoods they hate, though coming from your shallow loins and cheesy vag probably not.

Anyway, when do we want to meet up the Good Part of Brooklyn? I'm for weekends, starting in the afternoon. Bushwick Country Club again?
posted by dame at 11:08 AM on January 3, 2007

Let's go somewhere else. That place is better when the weather is nice enough to sit outside, don't you think?
posted by ThePinkSuperhero at 11:14 AM on January 3, 2007 [1 favorite]

I like the afternoon idea.

And Saturday seems to be warm so we can perhaps meet outside!

I'd go with the Brooklyn Country Club -- if they have decent beer... Do they have an outside?
posted by lupus_yonderboy at 11:25 AM on January 3, 2007

Man, what is with Brooklynites and reading? [imagine smiley here] The Bushwick Country Club has okay beer and an outside, but it looks like the chance of rain is like 70 percent. Sputyn Duyvil also has an outside and has very good beer, but it doesn't open till 6. For an old school feel, there is always Union Pool, too.
posted by dame at 11:29 AM on January 3, 2007

6 is good, I think. Why don't we try the Sputyn Duyvil?
posted by ThePinkSuperhero at 11:37 AM on January 3, 2007 [1 favorite]

I heard they have a beer as low as $6 (!!!!) on tap at all times. But I think it's just the one...
posted by bunnycup at 11:57 AM on January 3, 2007

Barcade has tons of good beers on tap at reasonable prices, and 70s vintage video games in good supply -- but it can be noisy (I've never been there in the day), and doesn't open till 5PM.

And it's very close -- in fact, I can't believe I haven't gone there.

Does it have good beer? Bellevue at least had Sierra Nevada... it could be ear-splittingly loud but I loved it and missed it. Also, Siberia, their sister bar, was kick-ass too!

I am not fat and I smell like chlorine. Of course that a wannabe sloper could only think of "you are fat and stinky!" as insults in not surprising.

The L and G may break sometimes, but the F always blows.

Barcade is kinda noisy, but I haven't been early.

Six is not the afternoon.

I vote Union Pool, but am fine with whatever.
posted by dame at 12:22 PM on January 3, 2007

Not so into Duffs, though. I think we went there once and it was tiny inside, and seeing as it is supposed to rain it might be nice to have a bigger inside near the subway.
posted by dame at 12:24 PM on January 3, 2007

Well, I wouldn't know about the F. I take the 2, 3 - you know, an actual train that, you know, runs, and doesn't require three transfers and a shuttle to get me to my place of lucrative employment. Know what a real job is about? Ever heard of it?

Mea culpa, Dame. I'm truly SORRY about assuming you are fat but you know what they say, when someone gets as nasty and defensive as you when you say the word fat...it usually means they are. You acted like a spurned bitcj when I said that word, and I naturally assumed....But making me much more curious is: What are you really bitter about?

Duff's sounds fabulous.

Does general neighborhood disparagement...well, that's not PERSONAL is it? j/k, respecting the request.

I'd really like to go to Duff's (never been) but I'm not fussy as long as there's...you know....plenty of liquor.
posted by bunnycup at 12:38 PM on January 3, 2007

Duff's is really small inside if it is the place I am thinking of. Like enough room for eight people to sit. That is my only warning.

Why someone would want to come to something someplace they hate is confusing to me, but sure lupus.
posted by dame at 12:41 PM on January 3, 2007

Vox populi, vox dei. All right, let's do Duff's at 6PM. If it's too crowded or noisy, we can easily repair to my pad, which is a paltry four blocks away.

I put the event here, on my extreme NY music and arts calendar.
posted by lupus_yonderboy at 12:46 PM on January 3, 2007

Hmmm.... is it really that small?

How many people are we going to get?

We can always move to Zebulon which is just a couple of blocks away. Not ultra cheap but decent drinks and really really good music (and not so loud -- before the bands come on, which is later...)
posted by lupus_yonderboy at 12:49 PM on January 3, 2007

Forgive the silliness of this question, but being new here and this being my first meetup and all...is someone gonna wear a big blue hat or special sweater? Or do you all know each other already? I guess if it's really a small place it'll be obvious.

Yuck, yuck, yuck.

No, a lot of us have met each other and do know each other. Or people look at past meetup photos and look for familiar faces. Every now and then we make a sign, but at 6 p.m. on a Saturday, I doubt there will be a huge crowd. I try to keep a lookout for people who look like they're looking for a group of people that they're too embarrassed to approach on their own. Those tend to be Mefites.
posted by ThePinkSuperhero at 12:52 PM on January 3, 2007 [1 favorite]

I just checked, and it is that place and yes it is really small. Tiny. And sucky. In fact, we had a meetup a yearish ago that moved on to there and it broke the metup because it blew so much and everyone went home.

That you all moved there from out of the region to be part of a scene. And because of that you measure the perceived coolness of the region down to a block-by-block reading, and you'll turn on someone from another Culture Clan as soon as you think no one is watching.

But I don't care about that so much. Mostly I just don't like people that I suspect are even passive Yankees fans.

And of course we moved here to be part of something, scene or not--probably because we came from towns we didn't like for whatever reason. Holy cow, you've found the secret shame of NYC! The city never advertises itself as that ever at all.

That's just the way it is, sonofslim. There was a question about it in the city section years ago--I think it has to do with unification and the settled areas of Brooklyn then.

Nassau County is just a bunch of strip mall loving mooks who couldn't even hack the suburban wastes of Queens or Staten Island (because those places still got Negroes and Chinese) but would get beaten up in Bay Ridge. Kids like to pretend they're gangsta, but would give up their wallets full of cash earmarked for American Eagle to the first Brooklyn hoodlum who looked at 'em funny. Bankrupt, Republican fuckers, getting a bigger subsidy for their trains than MTA riders, then cloggin up our roads with their SUVs anyways.

Isn't the arc 'cheap space' --> 'super cool / trendy b/c artists move in' --> 'overdone / bashed for being trendy' -->'overpriced condos' --> no longer particularly interesting or out of the ordinary. what I mean is, no one thinks williamsburg is a hidden gem anymore, so hasn't the backlash died off too? It's just another subway stop.

aaanyway, what time are people heading for Barcade? I have plans later in the eve but if y'all are going for the afternoonish I will at least swing by. THe bar opens at 5, people were saying 6 before - is that still the plan?

Mayor Curley's secret New York theory isn't that far from the truth to be honest.

I have specific theories myself. For example, I've been to perhaps a dozen parties in Brooklyn Heights, Prospect Park and Park Slope -- and they all sucked, severally and individually (typically, white people in ties dancing stiffly to hackneyed black music). So I don't go to parties there any more (except dinner parties).

Williamsburg used to have a lot of amazing parties -- that's why I moved there. There are still some amazing parties but many of them are in Bushwick now.

Can we move this meetup to Marquee? If we all buy a bottle, we can probably reserve the entire VIP section.

You're not a New Yorker anymore!!! Off with your head!!!!!!

And celebrate it as a rich, burgeoning gem of a wonderful place to pay $5 for a warm PBR in a can.

Didn't dorian pick the Ding Dong on the UWS 14 months ago?

I was in Berlin, but I saw the pictures.

Where's the Marquee?

My theory is we won't change, just because of the somewhat difficulty we had reaching the decision in the first place...
posted by lupus_yonderboy at 9:49 PM on January 3, 2007

(He was kidding- Marquee is a club with bottle service in the Meatpacking District. At one point, it was quite the celeb hot spot- not sure if that's still true).

Damn, I lose on coolness AND on humour-detection.

Back to massive parallelism.

So, wait, I only scanned this, but it sounds like we need an Astoria meetup?
posted by muckster at 10:52 PM on January 3, 2007

I think it would be a good idea!

Wait.... that was Flushing, Queens. Or Western Civilization.

Plus, stav, you've already seen my butt.

Mine too. But I doubt you confused the two.

To the best of my knowledge, no photos of my butt exist. Wait. That's not true, I had a professional photographer take photos of it once but I never got 'em back.

I can't believe a meetup thread got 140+ comments. There had better be copious pictures.

I know! I had to peek in here to find out what was going on.

I have seen both dame's and jonmc's bums. Dame's is much cuter.

At some point in my year of sobriety, I may be able to feel good about hanging out in a bar, but not on day #6. Have fun.

Stav, check your email.

*checks, cries* Nope, no sweet NY butt action.

I am a fortunate man.

Haven't the stamina to read the whole thread, but because it was an issue, Barcade is dead in the afternoons, so basically perfect for us.
