When I post a comment, the page reloads. When the page reloads, it jumps to "#comment". This bugs me, and I don't think it used to happen. What this means in practice is that if I refresh the page to follow a thread, the reloaded page jumps to "#comment". Grrr. Intentional? Good? Bad? Ugly?
Maybe I'm just commenting more often so that I'm noticing it more. What's metafilthy? Actually, I should just follow the threads from my contributions page, shouldn't I?

I think there's a greasemonkey script that causes this behavior, it's supposed to take you to the new comments in a thread. Have you installed any greasemonkey scripts recently?

Not a greasemonkey user. It's a code thing. Matt's got it coded to jump to "theadXX#comment", which it dutifully does. Maybe this isn't a bug report -- if this is historic behavior, maybe this is a pony request. A teeny tiny pony.

It's here, and it's good. I can't tell you who wrote it though.

The origins of metafilthy have been lost in the mists of time.

They say it was fashioned out of a Novaya Zemlya tree bark by the lost tribe of Israel.

I hear it was brought back to Europe from the New World by early Spanish sailors, then when it was reintroduced in America the Yanks took credit for it.

Hm. This Metafilthy — is it PC-only, or am I just an idiot for not figuring out how to install it on a Mac? (In other words: I downloaded it to my Powerbook, but can't fet Firefox to recognize it, and don't know what to do with a XPI extension. Aren't I helpless today?)

I could take out the target, but I like seeing my own comment after I write it. Don't you hate having to scroll down and make sure it posted?

It works on Firefox on Mac, up to the lastest FF version. Try downloading the xpi to your desktop and dragging it into Firefox.

Matt, I don't mind scrolling down so much because that's the behavior I expect after posting a comment someplace. Also, I still have scroll after posting a comment with the current setup — I just have to scroll up. (The #comment target is the comment box itself.)
Ortho, thanks. I'm not sure why I didn't think of that on my own. Installed and ready for use next time I relaunch Firefox.

I could redirect to your posted comment, because personally I find being pushed to the top of the page off-putting on other blogs. I always figured it was a nice feature to auto-scroll you down.
Back when the footer was minimal, you could plainly see your comment on most monitor configurations, now I guess it goes down too far if you have a 1024x768 setup.

At the very least, Matt, you should send a 301 redirect after the post anyhow. That'll prevent reloads from re-posting comments (doesn't happen too often, but, yeah, it does happen). Just in case you're worried, back won't re-post either, since the interstitial post won't get saved in the browser's history.

I'd discourage you from metafilthy, personally. I realize a lot of people use it happily but the period of time I was using it was also the period of time my Firefox would blow up on a near daily basis. Uninstalling it - and no other changes - did away with the constant kabooms.

What do you mean by "blow up", phearlez? I've been getting severe cases of the memory leakage lately (FF1.5/XP SP2) , but I thought that was just Firefox.
