Teachers wear Ask Me shirts August 30, 2006 3:10 PM Subscribe
Thought you might get a kick out of the shirts that all of the staff members at my school had to wear for the first day of class (they were supposed to make us more recognizable/approachable).
Unbeknownst to anyone else I considered mine to be a subtle ask metafilter ad.... (more inside)

they changed our signs to "ASK US!" which i keep thinking is some sly reference to the patriot act.

Nice.
It reminds me of a friend's story about his first year teaching, on the night of his first parent-teacher meetings. Being nervous, he carefully prepared his thoughts for each student, plus a short bit about "teacher-family-student-patnership", days in advance. Upon showing his notes to one of the older teachers, he was informed that he would be lucky if anyone showed up. (It was basically a school for troubled kids.)
Waiting in his classroom .... first hour .... no one shows. Second hour.... still nobody .... five minutes before the end ... a parent walks in to discuss her son. My friend grabs the kid's file and looks up just as the parent removes her jacket, revealing a tshirt with massive 1980's style text on it, which says....
DONT ASK
ME FOR
SHIT.

I've been thinking of doing nice shirts but I can't think of anything aside from the standard logo. This is good though.

Wasn't there an idea kicked around a few years back about getting MeFi Jerseys made with our user number on the back?
Did that ever go anywhere? Because I always wanted one.
As for t-shirt ideas how about
Front
Metafilter:
Back
[insert a couple of hundred of the best MeFi taglines in very small font]

User names are great for those of you with the foresight to keep them short. I always wanted one of the jerseys but figured my name font would have to be so small there wouldn't be much point.

quin, you can order one of my jerseys (or one of a few other MeFites), but I believe Matt has said he won't be making any other custom shirts available - doing them individually was apparently a pain.
If you do order one of mine, don't worry about being recognized, or even approached. I haven't yet.

Yes Matt, please do those shirts! You should set up a call for more designs of a similar bent, hopefully ending up with some in blue & green as well.
Set yourself up with a nice place like wigu's topatoco that handles the orders to the screenprinting company and the stuffing and shipping of shirts to customers. Print on nice American Apparel tees, and try to make it so that they cost $20 shipped tops.
Practically a license to print money, inspire happiness, and foster community, all at once!
It would be really nice to resurrect the user number jerseys, except this time with quality, not cafépress shit. You might see if you can set something up with neighborhoodies to do a metafilter user hoodie, that would be terrific!

The day after WTO, I was walking back home from my job at Suzzallo at the UW. I was just near the beginning of the marching route and people kept sneering at me. One guy leaned into me as he walked and practically spat at me: "scum". I got home and was changing my clothes when it dawned on me - I had been wearing a shirt I got years before at the army/navy surplus store that said "Police" on it (instead of ARMY). Guess that was kind of stupid, but I'm just such a big Sting fan, I didn't even think about it.
