[-fave] button

In this thread, there is some horrifically bad advice being offered (along with a lot of good advice, I should add). Would it be a good idea to implement a [-fave] button as well as a [+fave] button? I would certainly have wanted to mark down a few of the answers if I had the chance.

Really, really not. That way dragons lie. If a comment offers really bad or dangerous advice you can flag it and/or point out in the thread that the advice is bad and explain why.

What makes you think you're opinion on the advice is better then anyone else's? If you disagree, post a comment explaining why.

You already know the answer to your question salmaci don't you.. I don't understand the snake of asking it plane. The [+] was on a bad idea to begin with. So your Jackson has a little burmese python. Deal. Sincere and utter dripping respect I Samuel at you feet and ask, do you ever wear clean socks?. DO YOU? PUNK?

On the other hand I here Digg has such a feature, spend more time there.

I use favorites to mark threads I want to revisit, sometimes because it was a great post that has generated an interesting discussion, sometimes because I want to see the advice in an AskMe, and very often because I am enjoying a train wreck and don't want to miss a gory detail. But it isn't voting.

What, to preemptively remove them from your favorites list before they are on it? That makes no sense at all.

+ adds a post/response to your favorites list
- would therefore, logically, remove it

So - would have no meaning except after +. And if you wanted to add something and then immediately remove it, you could just not add it to your favorites to begin with, no?

In any case, there's already a way to remove things from your favorites list.

Favorites aren't ratings, and if you want to mark something down, go to Slashdot or Digg.

I fav'ed a comment in that thread because it was outrageous and made me laugh and I want to show it to someone else later. I also thought it was bad advice. My fav wasnt an endorsement.

This sort of question is going to come up over and over again, because favorites are called "favorites" and denoted with a plus sign. It's not surprising that people understand this as a voting mechanism, rather than just meaning "noteworthy". Removing the number after the + could help- do we need to know in thread how many users "marked as favorite" when just indicating it was marked at all means anyone who keeps track can investigate further?

A symbol unassociated with the duggalos/slashtards might be a good replacement for "+". Maybe something like one of these: ∫ ƒ ◊. Though those might show up as useless boxes on people with uncultured windows installs.

I think it's a great way to keep track of things you want to go back to, and also as a terrific means to snark (which is awesome)

I agree with oneirodynia. I know what the "favorite" feature is used for, and I know it's not a "ditto" feature, but when I'm reading a thread, I still tend to parse it as a "ditto" feature.

Effigy2000 gets a no-prize from me for being the first good belly laugh I've had all day.

Implementation of the -fave button would cause me to perpetually assume whatever I say's gonna get downvoted so I'd just leave. It's one of the reasons I rarely post anything over there anymore. Half of what I put there was deleted because people downvoted it. I'm proud of what's left, but I'm also proud of what can't be seen. I love all my babies. =)

Trust me. Downvoting is a bad idea. But good on ya for suggesting it, Salmacis! Thumbs up!
