Boston Meetup August 3, 2006 6:08 AM   Subscribe

Hey Boston, how are you? ... Yeah? ... Hey, that's great. ... Right in the mouth, you say? ... Wow, down a whole flight of stairs? ... I would have lent you my sandwich board if I'd have known. Anyhow, the reason I'm posting: How'd you like to get together to do a meetup thing sometime this month?

I've been informed of a chance run-in between enfa and a non-Mefite who was at the last meetup, and I understand there were a couple of suggestions. For instance, Sunday, August 20, the day of the next MIT swapfest. Pool was fun last time, too, and Flat Top Johnny's in Kendell Square is both nearby and was suggested. (Sure, I know it's technically Cambridge, not Boston, but it's close to the T and it's just right across the river.) Unfortunately, the swapfest's hours and Johnny's hours are disjoint (9-2 and 3-late, respectively), which would make said plan a challenge.

Any other ideas? Suggestions? Anti-Cambridge snarks?

If we have the meetup on the 20th at Logan at like 9:30 am, I can go otherwise I'll have to get you next time.

The 20th is tough for me as I'll have a bunch of visitors who wouldn't enjoy a meetup. The following sunday works if that's an option for anyone...

I second the above. If we can have it a week later I'd be able to do it.

If it's not going to intersect with the swapfest, how about a night that isn't a school/work night? Saturday the 26th, fr'instance?

Damn. I can only make a Logan meetup on the 5th or the 16th, in the afternoon.

I could make a Logan meetup today or next week, [in the afternoons, both times], but I guess that's out...

I hear the Cheers bar at Logan is one of Boston's most authentic establishments!

Uh, okay, let's all go to Cheers at Logan at different times and sit in the same chair and order the same thing. It can be a sort of post-modern meetup.

Plutor, I would come to the Saturday the 26th plan. The 20th is a non-good day. I'd like to make at least one before ever leaving here. Dinner at Flat Top Johnny's sounds like an okay idea.

Hey! I'll be in Logan on the morning of the 20th too.
posted by sotalia at 2:12 PM on August 3, 2006

Sadly, my guests leave on the 27th, so that's the earliest meetup I could make. that said, if I'm the only person who can't do the 26th, I'll just make the next one!

Brilliant!! everybody sit at the bar, and ask the bartender for a "Virgin Martini" when he/she asks you what the hell you mean tell them it's just an olive on a stick.

rinse, lather, repeat

The weekend of the 19th already has Boston by Bike at Night and swapfest, and if you'll be at either, contact me.
Saturday the 26th seems reasonable for most parties so far. 6pm at Cambridge Brewing Company for dining, then FlatTop Johnnys at 9 for socializing?

I could the 26th, and the Kendall area would be great.

I like enfa's plan. It's too bad this thread got shoved off the front page of MeTa so quickly. Sorry, darsh.

Coolio. Flat-Top has a dartboard, so I can bring extra darts if people want to play.

Pretty sure I can do the 26th - And Flat-Top, while not in the same league as the airport Cheers, will do I suppose. Perhaps I'll yell "Norm!!" when I walk in just to capture a bit of the experience.

And darsh? Guests that wouldn't like a meet-up? For shame ;-)

The grub & beer are better at CBC than at FlatTop's, plus they have a bunch of seating outside. But, playig pool is a good way to stand around and socialise.

So what usually happens at these meetups?

Only suckers go to Cambridge. Especially on a day off when they work across the bridge from Harvard Square. Who's going to join me in a boycott until Boston meetups are actually in Boston?
posted by Mayor Curley at 4:59 PM on August 18, 2006

I have to agree that it's become a parody at this point, like these people think there's a surcharge for riding the subway across the river. It's especially funny because they keep insisting that these are Boston meetups — like the kids who sign up for classes at Harvard Extension and tell their families, "Yeah, I'm studying at Harvard..."

That said, I suppose the fact that I probably wouldn't attend anyway disqualifies me from participating in your boycott.

Some of like going across the bridge to Cambridge! ;)
posted by zaphod at 10:08 AM on August 19, 2006

I'd gladly join Curley's boycott (my wife will, under her breath, utter "I f*ckin' hate Cambridge" every time we're forced through some well-meaning but clearly clueless friends to navigate that strange land north of the river) but - I have few friends and crave the attention, so I'll be there with bells on.
posted by jalexei at 12:01 PM on August 19, 2006

For the record, I was kidding about a boycott. I don't have the charisma to lead one, anyway. But there's no way I personally am going to fight my way to harvard for basically the sixth time that week!

If this is happening at 6 on the 26th at CBC, I'd like to join in. Other than looking around for the most good-looking group, or eavesdropping for the most scintillating conversation, how does a first-timer find you?
posted by daisyace at 1:43 PM on August 20, 2006

@daisyace - Hmm. At the meetup in Brighton a couple months ago, fuzzbean had a small stuffed animal. I had an index card with 'metafilter' written in Sharpie. Just look for the guy that looks like me and bring a sign that says metafilter for yourself - someone will flag you down.

@Mayor Curley - you should still come!

current expected guest list - should we make reservations?

Count me in as well, as another first-timer.
posted by Carol O at 5:06 AM on August 24, 2006

OK, if I won't be the only first-timer I'll come as well. Although it's a little confusing from the thread exactly when and where we are meeting.

Yeah, I can't figure it out either. Anyone?
posted by danb at 3:10 PM on August 24, 2006

Sorry for the confusion. This Saturday night at 6. We'll be meeting at the Cambridge Brewing Company.
http://www.cambrew.com/directions.htm
Following drinking at the CBC, we'll be headed next door to Flat Top Johnny's at around 9pm to play pool.

If you've never been, the Cambridge Brewing Company is a brewpub in Kendall Square in Cambridge MA. It is about a 6-7 minute walk from the Kendall/MIT Red Line stop.

I'll try to snag a cluster of tables visible from the entrance. I will be wearing a bright red creative commies tee. I'm tall, blonde, male, and caucasian.

Ok, and some arbitrary thing that we can all do to identify each other and yet not look like dorks? How about carrying around a copy of the Weekly Dig, or some other free newspaper that isn't the Metro?

I made a new thread, so people who didn't already see this one might notice.

Darn, can't make it.
posted by canine epigram at 6:19 AM on August 25, 2006

Well, if you're going to make it only three blocks away from me, I'm definitely coming. See you tomorrow!
posted by Mapes at 2:54 PM on August 25, 2006

The food at CBC ain't bad either and it's fairly inexpensive. So I might show up, have dinner, a few brews and bugger off.
