Why not call Mefi Music "MuFi"? Thoughts?
I hear the mu phis are having a crazy party tonight after the exchange with the tri-delts.

Wow, let me see if I can parse out the serpentine intricacies of your thought. The first syllable of music is 'mu-', yeah, OK, I got that part. But man, the rococco mental gymnastics that it must have taken to pair that up with '-fi'! I'm still scratching my head over that one.
I, here in my capacious boxer shorts, have chosen to call it RockMe. I don't care too much what you call it.

Debatable, but it definitely is one that has been made about 73,000 times in the week or we've had the subsite. Thus thehostility sarcasm.

So your question is not actually "Why don't we call it that" (when actually, a lot of us already do), as you originally said, but "Why don't we put that on the navbar at the top?
I wouldn't. The navbar shorthand for the other sites should be clear on what they're linking to, I think. "AskMeFi" works, "MuFi" not so much.

There's no perfect default name for the music page the way there was for AskMe (and I still SO want a cooking page called EatMe). Unless somebody comes up with something perfect a name will just have to evolve and grow into general use.

1) Matt has made it clear, repeatedly, that he does not like cute abbreviations. No, not even "AskMe." No, I don't know why. Like almost everyone, I use those abbreviations, and will probably use "MuFi" should I ever have occasion to mention that part of the site. But it's not going up on the header, for the reason I just mentioned, so you're wasting your breath.
2) It's generally a poor idea to whine in public about "pent up hostility" and say things like "I just thought it was a good suggestion." All MeTa (sorry, Matt) posts are subject to the random hostility of the MeFi multitudes; the only graceful thing you can do is take your licking and keep on ticking.

scottreynen-That's only three of the five, if it is three of the five.
I'm reminded of that koan where the two monks are walking from one monastery to another when they come upon a woman standing by a stream, afraid to go into the water. One of the monks picks her up and carries her across, and the two go on their way. As they approach their destination the other monk turns to the one who helped the woman and says, "I'm very troubled that you picked up that woman. We are not supposed to touch women." The first monk says, "I put her down hours ago, next to that stream. It is you who have been carrying her all this time."
I'm not sure what that has to do with the price of tea in China, but there it is.

The price of tea in China is actually loosely correlated to the volume of retellings of that koan, in fact.

Also, this is something that only time can settle. No one has ever declared/suggested a specific foreshortening with any direct success: at best, folks have made good guesses. Music will be called what people call it, no more, no less—whether there is one nickname or several will depend on how much concensus shows up over time.
Consider the names in use for ask.metafilter.com:
- Ask Metafilter
- ask.metafilter
- AskMeFi
- AskMe
- Ask
- The Green
Matt isn't holding a naming competition. There's nothing to win. Just wait and see. Use your preferred name, by all means, but don't be obnoxious about it.
