This image is too big April 25, 2006 11:19 AM Subscribe
Can this big-ass image be made to go away? It's just stupid.
It's just stupid.
Well it's not just stupid. It's so much more.

Ugh. FWIW, I adblocked the filename.
Considering who posted it, you could also just get that specific user-comment killfile script thingy and be none the poorer.

What iconomy said. Do not understate the case for such an image.

I'm pretty sure I'd flag it -- either as "breaks the guidelines" or "fantastic" -- if it didn't crash my goddamn Firefox. Ah well.

Guh?
I used AdBlock on the picture so I could go back to the thread without my FireFox going all spastic, and was just suggesting it as an alternative solution.
If cedar wasn't using AdBlock or similar thing, the suggestion wouldn't be very helpful, hence FWIW.
Sorry to disappoint The MeFite Defective Agency. You can take your deerstalkers off now.

What you saw (it's gone now) is the image my server is programmed to send when anyone deep links any of my image files. What Matteo thought he was linking to is a frame grab of two kids doing akanbe, from the third DVD of Ah! My Goddess! TV anime.)
Considering the topic and my first post in it, it's actually apropos. That blinking image is the one I created to drive away all the MySpace people who kept deep-linking to my image files, which I mentioned in the first post in that thread.
The goal was for it to be obnoxious and painful to look at, without being gross or obscene, while using up as little of my bandwidth as possible (only 17K). Did I succeed, or what?

once more, evidence is presented for images to be thumbnailed. That way they could still be used to convey important information but limited in their collateral-damage.

If SDB did it to annoy MySpace users, then he is by definition not a douchebag, but rather the anti-douchebag.

That image was terrible. I say that as someone who usually enjoys terrible images from hijacking htaccess redirects.
A simple and tiny "don't steal images" GIF would probably suffice. That, or goatse.cx or tubgirl.

What you see as evidence for thumbnails, I see as evidence that the image tag sucks.

"Of course, I just set my site's htaccess file....."
Exactly. This is the right way if the goal is to stop bandwidth theft. The image swap thing is only the right way if you want people to understand that your concept of "clever" hasn't matured since grade school. Seriously. It was funny back in '98. Now? Not so much.

And yet all we got was...work being created for a mod.
Wait. If I understand what happened, matteo tried to deep-link an image from someone else's server. And you figure the cleanup should be blamed on Steven C. Den Beste?
I also like the alternative suggestions. Steven C. Den Beste says he tried to create an offensive image so people would stop leeching his bandwidth, and a bunch of y'all reply, "But it's too offensive. Could you choose something easier to look at?"

shit, folks. people link to images, and sites create substitutes to discourage the bandwidth leech. shit happens. it was a mistake, and it's fixed. easily at that. pitchforks and torches down.

Better would be a site-wide preference toggle to show/hide inline images, like the one at Metachat. Easy peasy.

On the other hand, that might encourage inlining images, so maybe not.
