Oh, that's nice.

Woot.

Cool.

Very nice!! If only for the quick chuckle this one gave me. Gosh I just adore the mefisnark sometimes.

Is it just me, or is the followed-link color a really awful (in context) purple?
posted by cortex at 2:00 PM on April 14, 2006

Cool.

(Purple? For me it's a slightly lighter shade of the yellow non-followed-link color.)
posted by Gator at 2:02 PM on April 14, 2006

The background color looks a little too saturated on my machine, might want to tone it down a little.
posted by bigmusic at 2:19 PM on April 14, 2006

As someone who hasn't looked at projects before today -- and who looked for the first time about an hour ago, before you put this up -- this functionality was exactly what I was missing to get context on the whole thing (f'rinstance, how much is a lot of votes.) Great job, great timing.

Neat.

I like this -- finally some sort of point to the votes.

And while we're on the subject, this site, just posted on the front page does a much better job at choosing text colours for a page with a dark-red background. As it is, the Projects page makes my eyes go a little buggy.
posted by Robot Johnny at 2:51 PM on April 14, 2006

Solid.

An RSS feed of that page would be especially sweet. Or maybe it's there and my moronity is showing.

Pony: Could we get the username of the poster as well?

this site, just posted on the front page does a much better job at choosing text colours for a page with a dark-red background. As it is, the Projects page makes my eyes go a little buggy.

What's weird is the middle brighter red background on that page is 670000, and the original eye-bleeding background was 660000. I toned it down to 551111, but I see their background is slightly darker still. Let me try that darker hue and tone down the white text slightly.
posted by mathowie (staff) at 3:41 PM on April 14, 2006

Their text is also darker, it's not white.
posted by kirkaracha at 4:33 PM on April 14, 2006

very useful. i just wasted an hour. thanks.
posted by fishfucker at 4:40 PM on April 14, 2006

Matt--I don't know that what you need is darker so much as greyed down. Dark or light, the color is ending up too intense.

What about #762626?
posted by frykitty at 4:46 PM on April 14, 2006

frykitty, shift-refresh to get the newest CSS, I toned down the color a bunch, it's now much darker and less saturated.
posted by mathowie (staff) at 4:52 PM on April 14, 2006

*refreshes* Yep, I was seeing the most recent color. It still hurts, IMO.
posted by frykitty at 5:11 PM on April 14, 2006

Great, thanks.

But the color! The color!
posted by bru at 5:13 PM on April 14, 2006

Sweet, great stuff. Thanks Matt
posted by blag at 5:19 PM on April 14, 2006

Right now the background color is 4e0101. What I think everyone is suggesting is just way less saturated. like 883838 or something.

Also, why not change the link colors as well?
posted by delmoi at 6:20 PM on April 14, 2006

good feature now that there are so many projects
posted by caddis at 6:47 PM on April 14, 2006

Awesome! Thanks for this, Matt.
posted by Emperor Yamamoto's Eggs at 7:57 PM on April 14, 2006

Well done.
posted by boo_radley at 9:03 PM on April 14, 2006

Color idea: maybe drop the red theme entirely?

Here's a page example with a kind of violet/indigo scheme that seems to go better with the calm blue and green tones of the other pages.

I've just never seen a red page, no matter how well done, that didn't bother me.
posted by taz at 11:29 PM on April 14, 2006

Yeah, I agree with taz. Another thing to think about: Orange, with dark links and text.
posted by delmoi at 12:05 AM on April 15, 2006

oops, forgot to change the links background at the bottom of the page... but you get the idea.
posted by taz at 12:31 AM on April 15, 2006

I really like taz' color scheme. Much easier on the eyes.
posted by Miko at 6:37 AM on April 15, 2006

I like taz' color scheme.
posted by boo_radley at 6:41 AM on April 15, 2006

The violet is nice. And who wants their project to be in the red anyway?
posted by Roger Dodger at 7:53 AM on April 15, 2006

huh, I love the red. but red's always been my fave color.
the purple looks somewhere between -filter and -talk.
posted by mdn at 8:01 AM on April 15, 2006

this is why it's so much easier to be a coder than a designer. every damn person and their dog thinks they have a valid opinion about colours, but they don't care an iota whether you use a linear or exponential algorithm. thank-god...
posted by andrew cooke at 8:34 AM on April 15, 2006

What I think everyone is suggesting is just way less saturated. like 883838 or something.

Ya, I think that is going in the right direction. Technically, it isn't just 'less saturated', it is also a lot brighter - together, they make the colour more washed out.

You could go even further in that direction: 8F4949 or 964C4C (thank you synthaxis :P).
posted by Chuckles at 9:09 AM on April 15, 2006

Tell the purple that it's ugly and I hate it!

I like the blood red, honestly. I just don't like the yellow links on it. I've never liked yellow, though, or understood how others liked it.
posted by Eideteker at 9:29 AM on April 15, 2006

I'll rework the colors to something more subdued next week.
posted by mathowie (staff) at 9:43 AM on April 15, 2006

I just reworked the colors to something between green and blue. Shift-refresh to see it.

It looks ok on my color calibrated 20" LCD mac, but I have no idea how it looks on laptops in bright sun, old CRTs on a PC, etc.

Does this create any sort of a disadvantage, then, to posting your project near the end of a month?
posted by twiggy at 11:40 AM on April 15, 2006

Why so? It's highest votes over all time, listed by month-of-original-posting.
posted by cortex at 11:49 AM on April 15, 2006

Why so?

Because the first 10 of the month will automatically make it to the most popular list, even with no votes, until more popular projects come along throughout the month... Is that what you're saying, twiggy?
posted by Robot Johnny at 12:06 PM on April 15, 2006

Oh, and I like the aqua, Matt! It feels more like a part of MetaFilter now.
posted by Robot Johnny at 12:08 PM on April 15, 2006

Now it looks like a puke green cross between AxMe and MeTa.
posted by Eideteker at 2:03 PM on April 15, 2006

Ooohh...pretty. And easy on the eyes. Thankee, Matt.
posted by frykitty at 2:05 PM on April 15, 2006

Consensus is a beautiful thing.
posted by caddis at 2:17 PM on April 15, 2006

don't forget to change the favicon.
posted by puke & cry at 4:17 PM on April 15, 2006

Robot Johnny (and twiggy, via, if he's right): good point. But that's a pretty short-term issue -- and it's not a disadvantage for late-month posters; it's just a happy bonus early in the month for the first few posters.
posted by cortex at 4:24 PM on April 15, 2006

way better with this color. Actually it's like a combination of all the other pages on the site. Green, blue, and gray :P
posted by delmoi at 4:35 PM on April 15, 2006

it is only barely distinguishable from askme for me. if you're gonna drop the (beautiful) red I'd go with that indigo deal above b/c at least it looks like a different color. but, ultimately it doesn't matter much, and clearly (clearly!) there's no way you'll please everyone :).
posted by mdn at 5:05 PM on April 15, 2006

Yeah, I liked calling Projects "the Red." I'd rather a subdued, easier-on-the eyes red shade, like #A43D3D, than what's there now. Still, what's there now is at least easier on the eyes than the previous incarnation.
posted by Gator at 5:08 PM on April 15, 2006

fav.ico is still red.

I prefer the red, for what it's worth, and for saying "On the red".
posted by dobbs at 5:38 PM on April 15, 2006

The favicon is greenish blue and has been since this morning, but you have to bookmark it again for your browser to drop the cached one.
posted by mathowie (staff) at 7:21 PM on April 15, 2006

We can still call it "the red".

Actually I was thinking it would be cool to have red top with a turquoise page.
posted by delmoi at 8:24 PM on April 15, 2006

I liked the red too! Ah well! What is it now? "On the turq"?
