Prog-rock? A history teacher should know better. Yes, Genesis, ELP = prog rock. Steely Dan might be lots of things but prog-rock ain't one of them.

Just pointing out that the characterization "annoying 1980s prog-rock band" is wrong in almost every way. Except possibly for "annoying", but I'd say that's the fault of classic-rock radio programmers, not the band.

(I should note that I'm not a huge Steely Dan fan, especially since any sophisticated restaurant I go to in New York seems to think that playing Steely Dan is a sign of being 'adult' or something, but their best stuff ('Dirty Work,' 'My Old School," Reelin' In The Years," "Do It Again,") hold up quite well 30 years down the line.

The term 'New Wave' caused no end of confusion among a lot of people in the 80's, Samart Dalek. Me and my heavy metal freinds heard it applied to shit like Duran Duran & Flock Of Seagulls and thought that's what it (and by extension, punk) meant. Some of us learned that punk meant stuff we actually liked, like te Ramones and Bad Brains, and eventually realized that New Wave meant great stuff like Elvis Costello and Dave Edmunds. But the indiscriminate claiming of that label caused some problems.

The Minutemen (in the liner notes of Double Nickels On The Dime) namecheck Steely Dan, Blue Oyster Cult and Van Halen. That (along with the incredible music therein) endeared me to them.

I like the Minutemen version of "Dr. Wu."

It doesn't get more "indie cred" than that. Steely Dan first turned me on to Duke Ellington, too, with that cover of "East St. Louis Toodle-Oo" on Pretzel Logic. Any band that sits in the middle of a Duke Ellington-Minutemen connection is fine by me.
